just received my Titan Vanessa heatsink from ray99mond. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

and as usual, my hands was itchy and i started to bend the fins back into the correct position, so i noticed some fins was loose (not bonded with the heatpipe) doh.gif doh.gif

thus i started my stove and put on the heatsink to heat it up to the soldering melting point to begin soldering the heatsink

as this heatsink was fast as dissipating heat and wind was blowing from outside, i was loosing heat fast.....so i set the stove on max fire...... icon_idea.gif icon_idea.gif

and then i started soldering......then i stood there for a while.....KABOOM !!! rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

my ear went deaf for a while, then i was like WTF, i got a cut on my abdomen and i look at the heatsink, and the heatpipe exploded !!! rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

looks like i've burned-in for too long until the heatpipe exploded man !!!

my mum thought i was dead coz it sounded like the stove exploded, and even the flame was put off by the explosion sweat.gif

here is the pic, there are actually 3 heatpipes folded in a " U " shape.
the middle heatpipe exploded due to extreme pressure, and it sounded like pipe bomb man

a section of the heatpipe that was totally launched at my stomach man doh.gif doh.gif

and my injured stomach, quite a deep cut, i was standing like around 60cm from the stove and it got me man mad.gif mad.gif
it aimed at me man vmad.gif vmad.gif

it also send out molten tin from the base coz the explosion was really a big boom!!
just look at the stove area, covered with bits of tin.

luckily i was wearin specs at tat time or i migh be blind de....look at the specs carefully !!!

after recovering from that, i've removed the useless section of the heatsink.

just look at the impact from the explosion !!! totally pushed the fins inwards !!

and i mounted it on my Mobo, it's still doing well, at 45°C at idle for Barton 2.2Ghz at 1.9V, even my SI-97 couldnt get such low temperatures

Lucky you din get killed  doh.gif

Are heatsinks even made to undergo such temps rclxub.gif scary man the things you guys do... so how can claim warranty brows.gif

Blew up coz proc too hot...  laugh.gif
*
i am really lucky that i wore specs just now.
i have to bear with 2 heatpipes now.
the temp is still okay

QUOTE(ah_fong @ Mar 30 2006, 04:30 PM)
lol !!! next time bcarefull man !!

as i know inside the heatpipe got something like an carbon !!
my lecturer told me is same material with our car engine exhaust valve !!
*
actually, the chemical inside is not really the threat here.
it's the high pressure explosion from the copper pipe which is the most dangerous.
heating a heatpipe is equivalent to a pipe bomb

WTF????First time to hear heatpipe burst. rclxms.gif

i want to maintain my reputation for always being the firs rclxub.gif

This freaking crazy. U dare to doing that and lucky u still alive. Hope be careful next time. sweat.gif
*
i did that to my SI-97, managed to drop around 1-2°C, Thermalright deserves some recognition because their QC and their soldering standards are quite high icon_rolleyes.gif

sweat.gif  sweat.gif you're da man! But luckily you're still alive; if the piece of copper aimed towards your head, drilled a hole through your skull and shoot out from the back of your head, then nailed at the wall behind you... that will be a new episode of Final Destination laugh.gif

i know some people in the metal industry, and i understand how it works.
just that this time, i forgot to turn off the stove.

I cannot imagine if while he was soldering, the heatpipe blew up in his face.  Man that would be even worse!  Btw what were you using to solder it, AllnGap?
*
luckily it blew up after i've finished soldering, coz i did some soldering on the base and on the top of the heatpipe.

i used tin, obviously from soldering tin.

I think if you didn't leave it on a burning stove it might not have exploded.  Solder it quick and take it out to cool........might be a better way.  But seriously, being an extreme modder is great and all - but becareful man.  Take precautions.  You got away with a cut this and pretty starry pants this time, the next time  your might not be so lucky - it might explode in your hand or have sharpnel lodged in your eye.  Nasty.....  sweat.gif
*
you're right, i did that on my SI-97, and it lowered temperature.
maybe i was careless this time

I guess permanently bonding the non-joining sections with solder really does work.  And it should actually. I am glad you did the experiment and not me man.  LOL
*
actually, the fins and heatpipes are bonded using tin
except for the tip of the heatpipe.

*
it's hollow pipe with some wick structure inside

what's inside the heatpipe?
liquid?

supposedly, a small amount of liquid. but u wont hear it coming out like steam

You should have known la.

i knew it might explode, but i was too careless

thts wrong la weh..u cant just heat up metal like tht.. it'll explode coz theres probably air in it.. try turning on ur water kettle with no water in it sure after awhile meletup

yep...it's like a pipe bomb

QUOTE(woundxp @ May 8 2006, 02:32 AM)
