this guide is from my experience handling 2 unit of Dell Vostro 220s that got PSU malfunction
1st unit, i get a replacement which take me 1 month to find but it is not new unit (2nd hand part)
2nd unit, after last experience with the 1st unit, i suggest a replacement of casing so i can get standard ATX PSU
Dell Vostro 220s casing

SFX power supply that so hard to find (i think they not produce new unit anymore)

so i bought Coolermaster Elite 361. being convertible like Vostro 220s casing, to me it was a perfect replacement
CM Elite 361 a bit bigger than Vostro 220s but it mean airflow more good & easier for me to work around
the replacement, CM Elite 361

since mobo for Vostro 220s that i worked on is using microATX format, there is no problem to transfer it into CM Elite 361
FYI, this mobo using Intel E5400 processor. i don't know if Dell had issue others format for Vostro 220s mobo
Vostro 220s mobo in CM Elite 361

1st problem in this project is mobo backplate
for Vostro 220s, Dell had design that backplate is actually part of the casing itself
so there is no way we can pull it out and that transfer it to another case (except if u want to cut it out
my solution is using hard thick paper & make hole that matching backplate on original casing
original backplate

my custom backplate (hole for PS/2 mouse was left out since it will not be use anymore)

2nd problem is heatsink
CPU heatsink for Vostro 220s is good & silent but as i found out Dell design the heatsink attached to mobo with screw direct to casing
u can install another heatsink i.e: standard Intel heatsink that use pushpin but it add cost & wasted such a good heatsink from Dell
my solution, using mobo stand nut as i pictured below.. but not all mobo stand nut created equally
some might have bigger hole & some just fit right in with the heatsink screw
get someone help to hold the heatsink in place while u try to adjust & fix the screw to the mobo (this is really an important part)

3rd problem is front panel header
Dell has not printed out the configuration on mobo like others manufacturer do & they also does not published it anywhere in their website
after searching various forum, i give a try using tip from tips4pc.com
header for power & reset switch is no problem.. for hdd & power light, u just need to reverse the pin if it does not light up
last problem that give a little headache is message "USB front error" when i boot up the pc & force me to press F1 if i want to continue
it will be a nightmare to do this everytime the pc boot up
after some searching, i found the solution (which i forgot the website/forum)
Dell give 3 set USB front header on Vostro 220s mobo
what i do is shorting pin 8 & 10 using jumper as shown below for USB header 1 & 2
connect the front panel USB cable to header 3 on the mobo

DONE!!!
for installing hard drive, PSU, optical drive.. u can refer manual for CM Elite 361 or various forum on the net
