I'm going to be a future SMR resident, moving in this March. I read the rules and regulations already, especially about the electrical appliances part.

I heard there are lots of things that cannot be brought in there, especially for cooking. Can I bring an oven, an electrical cooker (the type that you plug in then it goes hot then u can like cook soup or make dishes) ?? Oh yeah I'm bringing a mixer too. rclxm9.gif

Some people may think I dont have so much time to cook or so but I love it, so I'll definitely arrange my time properly! HAHA biggrin.gif

Anybody that brought illegal stuff inside then get caught before? or rarely people get caught? Haha! brows.gif

I saw some pictures that in the kitchen there's a fridge, big one, (although they mentioned to only provide a mini bar for us)

Any SMR-ers please give some advice!

THANK YOU PEOPLE!!! notworthy.gif

I don't think Monash Residence allows cooking as the place is not made for that. And microwave oven is also a no. They do have a mini-fridge and a flatscreen tv in the room.

Even your clothes you have to send it to the laundry and over a certain allotted weight, you have to pay for it.

Sunway residence do allow cooking and you can bring all your cooking utensils if you want to. There is also a washing machine free for use.

I see I see, it states that it allows light cooking la. Which probably means no fire, i think. I only know that the oven (not microwave oven, the oven that dials up and it has light then it will heat up) is allowed but I'll have to write in for permission. Management haven't replied me yet hmm.gif

Anyhow, thanks! Hopefully electrical cooker is permitted. biggrin.gif

You may have to pay for the additional power usage. The aircon is also for a fixed number of hours and additional usage is chargeable.

Ahh yep, 6 hours per day is more than enough for me. The only problem is the 1GB internet data, not sure if it is enough but if no Youtube/Steam movies/downloading and only normal web browsing is more than enough.

By the way, any football fans there? Wondering how can I manage to watch football, except online streaming because I don't know which website to steam! haha, and no installation of Astro.

cckkpr, you're a resident there? right now or used to be?
and thanks for the advice given biggrin.gif

You will be disciplined if you are caught with forbidden items. I know a friend who had complicated sound gear being told off!

Hi guys. I'll be entering Monash next month, and staying at SMR. Quite nervous about this. And have many questions.

Are there lots of internationals at SMR? Will I be placed with other newbies in the same unit or will we be mixed with seniors?

And I'm really disappointed about reading that we won't be allowed to cook. Any recommendations for food nearby?

Has the internet quota ever caused any inconvenience? Been reading through many posts, it seems a little show and limited. Do you recommend a broadband instead?

i think there is not enough space to put cooking utensils, since the unit might not be small but compact.heard there is a microwave oven in the unit
food:rock cafe/medan,orange.with the completion of link bridge to sunway pyramid if you dont mind the 'long' walk, there are a lot of choice in sunway pyramid and around there

internet quota is 1GB from what i know, not enough can topup i think.(if the provider is still yes4g that is) but if there any need can just walk over to monash campus or starbucks for internet lol

i dont think its possible to install unifi in SMR,3g/4g broadband have mixed reviews maybe others can help out with this

yes there are a lot of internationals but probably you will be placed with the locals. not sure where you will be placed but it will probably be quite random. you can cook using simple equipments such as rich cooker. some friends of mine are doing it.

food options are mentioned as the poster above. internet quota is a problem. it's best if you subscribe to P1 or YES or umobile which offers a dongle for convenience.

Make a request to be placed with locals. And keep pestering them. Foreign students are generally a nightmare. Any request to move to another place will be subject to availability and a charge of RM200, I think, each time.

You won't like Indonesian students singing and playing guitar loudly at 3.00a.m. Generally, foreign students are not enrolled in critical or tough courses and can afford to enjoy.

thanks guys for the info and advice.

I think I shall get a portable induction stove and hide it if necessary.

And hoping that the wifi on campus is fast enough for Youtube!

Haha! Exactly what I was planning to do! But it is not decided yet because might not have any time to cook also! Maybe we turned out to be neighbours! When are you checking in?? Pray hard to get placed with good housemates. I don't mind internationals unless if they're singing in the middle of the night. Some internationals are cool people.. biggrin.gif

Currently am staying in SMR. Well able to have a personal room is good but i would say it is not that good. Most people are staying in their room all the time and you wont get interacting with them. The only time you can actually meet them is when youre brushing teeth or filling water

Hi. How do you dry your clothes and lingerie ?
I thought they don't allow students to hang clothes and garments on the balcony right ?

hi,same question i am having now
i thought drying can be done at the balcony, but later I found out that there is a rule stating that"clothes and garments are not allowed to be hung at the balcony",it's confusing rclxub.gif

by the way,do you think there is a need for us to bring our own printer? notworthy.gif

Yeah. Confusing.
Drying in rooms somehow sounds weird because there's no sunlight
unless you open the window

Hmm. I don't bring printer.
I think there's shop for printing maybe ?
Anyway if you bring it will be very convenient
like sometimes you have emergency need to print those document
you can settle it at room

Lol... i've never really thought about it till now.
i've been deferred to 2014 feb intake , was thinking of sunway monash residence, then thought i'd need help for getting up early morning biggrin.gif, so i decided to go to sun-u residence. at least the jumble of people early morning would force me to get up.

So these two places do have washing machines, so other than fan on high speed, there's got to be a better option for drying right?
If i'm not mistaken i was told there was a laundery service for heavier clothes ^.^ really not sure about it.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply
If I am not mistaken, you are going to hand wash some of your clothes ,right?
So are you going to bring your own clothes horse for the drying?
I am considering to do so since it is not provided ,but don't know if it is allowed or not sweat.gif
Sorry to bother you smile.gif

SMR doesn't have a washing machine, they provide laundry services for 5kg per week (4 times per month). Usually just send down in the laundry bag (provided) then around max 5 days can go collect back. Good service, I have no complains

What is the normal charge for laundry service? And by 4 times per month, you mean we can only send our clothes to the laundry once in a week only? What is the minimum days to get back our laundry bag?
