Not sure why you think it needs a few days to get your money. Cheque clearance has been reduced to 1 day since mid 2008. Provided you deposit your cheque before the cut-off time for that day (varies with banks, but should be around 4pm or so), than the cheque should be cleared by the evening of the next working day provided there are no issues.

Clearance is much faster for house cheques, meaning you present the cheque at the issuing bank itself (which also means you need an account there). I don't think it is necessary to be at the same branch though but it might depend on individual bank policy.
