I know that feeling,got cheated like that before,but as long as got warranty or 1 to 1 exchange,i have no problem and can considered new(in my opinion)

I bought my magnetic case ( with close/open n wakeup sleep function) from EBay for US$17. Very good quality and is still in tip top condition
First unit I received there were some slight issues with the magnetic function and I got a new replacement free thereafter

Yes it does cover top and bottom. I have the black one

I am using Nillkin, the leather version and nope it does not cover the top and bottom part. Meaning to say when u hold the top and bottom you're actually touching the Nexus 7 device itself which is the silver bezel.

Now the rear part of the case is actually rubberised PVC cum leather, it's quite durable and tough, it also curved a bit towards the top and bottom, so in my opinion, it provides adequate protection but won't protect a direct hit on the top or bottom of your device.

If u want something that not expose the bezel....go for capdase or asus travel cover..

i'm using asus travel cover, and i LOVE it.

it covers the whole tablet, even the power and volume buttons, but still can see NEXUS, well it's official accessory anyways
no magnet on the cover, which more preferable to me
the screen cover flap thing have no any retention thing on it, which seems more natural. it's like bringing a book around. you don't strap the cover of a book, do you?
oh, and it's slim too
