My 50-200 wr lens got crack!!! doh.gif sad.gif cry.gif

I don't know how it happened....It mounted on my K30, I took it out tonight because it have been one month ++ in the camera bag, I wanted to see if there a mold/fungus on the lens due to non usage...and I see a spot on it, try to wipe it off but no changes...so it must be inside the front element instead...

up close and personal!!!

confirm it is crack right??? not fungus? more like a windscreen that got hit by small stone!!!

I must be unluckiest off all..!!!

Could it be, due to overzealous use of silica gel in the camera bag, I am using the biggest packet of silica gel that I can find, that is 2 Inch x 4 inch size!! maybe the humidity in the bag is low than outside...so when i take it out from the bag, it got cracked??? rclxub.gif hahahha....

I should bought UV filter for all my lens now....

Sorry for so much early morning ranting....hopefully it won't effect the IQ of the picture taken with it...

because of silica gel? cant be la....that is a WR lens....should be 'tahan' from such humidity... (pls correct me if i'm wrong)

Sad to hear that. It's only the front glass, right? Can't that be replaced? Won't be free, but shouldn't be too expensive. Maybe you can ask DSC World for a quote? Looks odd... no clue what it is. A crack should have a sign of some sort of impact, right?
*
Yup on the front element glass...but it seems the crack is inside, because I touch the outside, it is smooth like normal glass...sigh..
I don't think will repair it, until confirm it will degrade the picture...still maybe can remove the cacat place in post process right....huhuhhu...

QUOTE(dayalan86 @ Mar 20 2013, 01:19 PM)
Looks like fungus to me, but worth to check it out.
*
It does look like fungus, except still doesn't show any greenish or yellowish sign of life...I will try jemur it under the sun next morning......

QUOTE(azerak @ Mar 20 2013, 06:33 PM)
it is possible because of too dry when you use the silica gel.i have heard of cases because of this but havent seen one.thats why i always recommend using drybox.
*
ya very possible, it happened once to glass (drinking one) in our cupboard before...the glass got crack and broken...the remedy is put some water in a glass in that cupboard....
with silica gel it hard to control the humidity, I just put a smaller packet one...

thanks for all the concerns anyway hopefully we will be more cautious!!!

need to test the lens....this Friday, maybe..

In my experience dirt/dust on the front lens will reduce contrast, may introduce glare etc. I don't think you can fix it in post like you can with dust on the sensor...

yes, duhhh doh.gif .. I am showing my noobieness of lack knowledge in photography sweat.gif

greetings...

anyway the lens is fine and dandy for my use, I took 129 images today...with my lack of experiences I can't discern the before and after the crack...

I just found out that SOOC jpeg at 100% really showing jagged and stepped edge!!! I should pixel peep more...

on another note how to sharpen the moon shot..in ACR? or photoshop? or when doing save as jpeg for web by choosing bicubic sharper?? I always chose auto in ACR and not touching the sharpen and noise part in ACR...

The last one is my favorite.

The others... maybe push the ISO? They look blurry to me, shaken a bit. Also I'd work on colors, contrast, etc.
Thanks for the tips.. I hope I will be ready when they came next time...

got to learn post process...but lack of time...usually I do pp after 12midnight!! already sleepy and the eyes also can not distinguish between blur/sharp/contrast/colour thing...huhuhu just use auto in ACR and auto level in PS...

Still doesn't have chance to test the t70-300, hopefully tomorrow not rain like today...

Macros are incredibly hard. I tried to take videos of ants, but it's shaking like mad. Even though my hand was resting against a desk... I was using a reversing ring though on the 18-55.

I think at least your first image could use some Lightroom magic though... it seems underexposed to me. I like those pictures to pop a bit.
*
It seem underexposed on the monitor at my work place too...but at my own monitor it seems fine... maybe the difference of monitor brightness, which hardly can be taken into account while doing the post processing due to many brands and models...though I agree with the lack of pop!!...

this is the bird in the full frame, taken at 3.32 pm...ehm maybe an overcast sky that day.

That's why it helps to look at the histogram smile.gif I believe my monitor is a quite decent one biggrin.gif There are of course calibration devices, but a bit hard to get and expensive. If it's a work expense fine, if not, I don't know. It'd be cool if there is a rental service for these calibrators, after all you only need it twice a year, maybe once a year.

I think with that cropped photo the histogram only shows something up to 2/3... I mean after that (from left to right) there is nothing. So push the exposure a bit until the histogram more or less extends over the whole area. Maybe not all the way, you'll have to see what looks good.

As for taking photos without shaking: http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/long-e...troduction.html

hahaha..thanks for reminding me about the histogram....I totally forgot about it doh.gif .. now I think I need to enroll in basic post-processing class!! sweat.gif
yup after balancing the histogram, the image come of a bit brighter...need to reprocess that image and check other image histogram too...

that article is really good, had read it before, will read it again....

thanks again...

us-ricoh-imaging make a blunder by publishing info on K3 early...kind of officially officiate things, gah I don't manage to see the details specification...although there is the leak spec...
