KILLZONE™ Mercenary

Killzone: Mercenary is a new first-person shooter in the Killzone series, developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita platform and powered by the stunning Killzone 3 engine. Starting just after the ending of the original Killzone, and revisiting many of the events from the Killzone trilogy, the game puts players in the rugged combat boots of a mercenary named Arran Danner. Danner is a former UCA-soldier who has no qualms about taking on paid contracts from the ISA as well as the Helghast.

When a seemingly routine mission to evacuate the Vektan Ambassador and his family in Pyrrhus goes awry, Danner discovers that the outcome of the war could very well depend on the fate of the Ambassador’s young son. With both sides going through increasingly desperate lengths to get hold of the boy, he begins to wonder whether the price of victory is really worth the paycheck.

Comprised of nine single-player missions — each nearly an hour in length— Killzone: Mercenary delivers a full Killzone experience in a portable package. Completed missions unlock additional replay challenges, with a host of special objectives to accomplish. The game also boasts a full-fledged multiplayer mode with six maps tailored for eight players and three different game types, including the popular Warzone mode.

In keeping with the soldier-for-hire theme, every action in Killzone: Mercenary is rewarded. The better you perform, the higher your payout - not just in the single-player campaign, but also in the multiplayer mode. The wages you collect are deposited into a single bank account, so the money you earn in the campaign missions can also be used to buy gear and weapons for multiplayer matches, and vice versa.

Killzone: Mercenary makes full use of the PlayStation Vita’s considerable input and graphics capabilities. It enhances the familiar dual-stick FPS control scheme with touch controls for actions such as brutal melee, and with tilt controls for accurate sniper aiming. The game even uses the powerful Killzone 3 engine to bring its massive environments and impressive set pieces to life.

Killzone: Mercenary is slated for a September 10th 2013 release.

Killzone: Mercenary gives a new perspective on the Killzone Universe. This time you’re not an Army grunt who follows orders - you’re freelancer, a gun for hire, a soldier of fortune. These guys don’t play by the rules or fight for any flag. They’re in it for the money. The client might give the objective, but they’re not going to be telling you how to do your job. You get to pick your own gear and tactics; as long as you get the results.

Killzone: Mercenary hosts a full single player Campaign, spread over 9 missions. In addition to the main missions, there is a new Contracts mode, offering an additional 27 sets of objectives.

You can choose from three difficulty settings; Recruit Trooper and Veteran. The harder the difficulty selected the higher the rewards gained.

Backstory

October, 2357: two months into the Helghast invasion of Vekta, climax of a centuries-old dispute between the two nations. Wrong-footed by the surprise attack, the ISA forces defending Vekta are facing defeat. In desperate need of elite units, they have turned to mercenaries to carry out some of the most vital and dangerous missions.

Among them is Arran Danner, a battle hardened merc working under the command of the private military company Phantom Talon Corp. Danner’s first assignment is to assist in the liberation of war-torn southern Vekta.

Secret Intel passed to the ISA by the Vektan Ambassador on Helghan suggests that the Helghast have an agenda beyond simple conquest. In a succession of daring missions, Danner disrupts these plans and kick-starts the fightback on Vekta.

Two years later and the ISA takes the war to Helghan, determined to finish it once and for all. Having proven themselves in the liberation of Vekta, Phantom Talon’s mercenaries are chosen to spearhead the attack on the Helghast capital, Pyrrhus.

But as the invasion unfolds, a seemingly routine mission to evacuate the Vektan Ambassador and his family from the Embassy leaves Danner in the middle of a power struggle between both sides in the war. He is forced to fight for his life through civilian streets under lockdown, heavily-guarded industrial complexes and secret research facilities, as plans sown on Vekta reach deadly fruition on Helghan.

Uncovering the true motives of both Helghast and ISA, Danner realises that the fate of a single civilian could change the entire course of the war, and both sides will do whatever it takes to get hold of him. The hardened mercenary is forced to question whether the price of victory can sometimes be too high, no matter how big the pay cheque.

Killzone: Mercenary features a full-fledged online multiplayer experience unlike anything seen on a handheld platform before. Supporting up to eight players and three different game modes, players fight across six maps featuring key events from the Killzone universe.

Game Types

MERCENARY WARFARE

Mercenary Warfare is a chaotic free-for-all, where players engage in a brutal and uncompromising race to earn the most Vektan Dollars in the set time limit. You have no allies here!

GUERRILLA WARFARE

ISA and Helghast factions go head-to-head in a team-based deathmatch. The faction that takes out the most enemy troops before the time runs out is the winner.

WARZONE

In Warzone, two factions face off in five different missions. Each mission features its own rules and objectives that rely on teamwork, strategy and tactical play. The results from each mission are tallied together to reveal the winners of this epic battle.

SHORELINE

user posted image

A run-down fishing village clings to the lowest cliffs of an active smoker stack; the weathered terrain shows evidence of the heavy industry taking place above.

Features
- A natural cave system links the interior of the hollow stack to the exterior terrain, creating multiple covered routes to navigate to different areas of the map.
- Helghast structures stand rusty and creaking, offering defensive positions – but be wary of the flimsy cover which will disintegrate around you under heavy fire.
- A slowly revolving fan blade creates a dynamic cover element requiring careful timing to run or shoot through the gaps.
- The precarious cliff paths can claim the lives of the careless with a short fall into a grim ocean grave

MARKETPLACE

user posted image

Bolted to the vertical cliffs of a Constantine smoker stack, this vertiginous multi-tiered market and entertainment district is at the heart of this industrial area. Beware the seedy back alleys, as danger could lurk around any one of the dimly lit corners.

Features
- Multi-tiered map design takes the gameplay vertical, with open vistas and long lines of sight.
- Narrow alleys and interiors offer adrenalin pumping close quarters combat.
- The tiers wrap around a central open space giving players an excellent view of the action, but also leaving unwary players highly exposed to enemy positions.

ZENITH

Sitting astride the open top of a dormant smoker stack, this enormous Arc Cannon is constantly scanning the atmosphere for targets, firing bursts of deadly energy at enemy vessels in orbit. Simultaneously, a ground battle rages in and around the superstructure of the cannon, the engagement intensified by the blinding flash and thunderous blast of the cannon bringing down another enemy warship.

Features
- Dynamic Arc Cannon fires periodically throughout the match, lighting the gameplay area in electric blue light and shaking the smoker stack to its foundations.
- Lifts can rapidly move the player from the control room directly beneath the cannon to a lower level maintenance gantry.
- Navigate the support structure and power supply cables of the cannon itself, dashing across this precarious shortcut.
- Caters to all playing styles with long lines of sight for snipers, enclosed areas for close quarters engagements and everything in-between

REFINERY

user posted image

The refinery is where raw harvested Petrusite undergoes the process to refine it into usable fuel. The facility interior is divided into a number of different areas for room-to-room close quarters combat, while the exposed exterior courtyard is a hotspot for long-range fire fights.

Features
- Balance of exposed exterior and enclosed interior areas to give a good range of engagement distances.
- High speed zip lines allow the player to rapidly traverse from one area to another.
- Elevated sections at either end of the refinery give oversight of much of the open courtyard area, but are vulnerable to counter-sniping and rocket attack
- Careful route selection is essential so as not to expose yourself to a variety of vantage points both obvious and obscure

SKYLINE

user posted image

The Vektan Halls of Justice suffered heavy damage during the Helghast invasion; the top floors of the building in particular sustained extensive destruction. Now a desperate fight for control of the building rages within the ruins of the top floor library and the lower floor offices, with collapsed floors and gaping holes creating shortcuts and hazards in equal proportions.

Features
- Routes can be dynamically created by smashing the floor to ceiling office windows.
- Highly detailed damage & destruction elements help reinforce the sense of being in the middle of a warzone.
- Collapsed floors create links between the two floors in addition to the damaged stairwells
- Zip lines give a rapid route from one area of the map to the other to escape a confrontation – or to initiate one

INLET

user posted image

The Corinth River provides the epicentre for the ISA’s invasion of Helgan – the beach area around the jetties and sluice gates being just the latest area to see action. The terrain is pockmarked with craters, trenches and discarded cargo creating a feeling of being in the middle of “no-man’s land”. A partially destroyed road bridge spans the battle area giving an advantageous but exposed elevated position from which to survey the battle zone.

Features
- An open and free form area, there are very few defined routes and considered, tactical movement is required to stay alive.
- Extreme lines of sight open opportunities for snipers and other long range weapons to be highly effective.
- The wide open terrain offers little in the way of cover from aerial VAN-Guard attacks, but a broad selection of hard cover points for on-foot engagements.
- This war torn landscape is perfect for setting traps, ambushes and flanking the enemy team.

- Game is gorgeous, clear and crispy textures, big draw distances
- Character models are awesome, the same with animation
