wahhh damn so high price.......its that true......
Its true. I'm not surprised at all. Years ago I found one in lfs already priced at over 1k. And that was quite many years ago. Now should be more pricey.

So after 2 years of neglect and poor habitat I think my turtles have some nasty shell disease sad.gif

After I stabilize the tank water cycle I'll take some photos and see what you guys think it is.

I saw some yellow-bellied slider/River cooter for sale at RM48. Size is 2 and half inches.

Another species (which the price caught my attention!!) is the Chinese stripe-necked turtle/ Golden thread turtle which is being sold at RM28. 2 inches too.

Okay, the reason that I'm looking at these turtles is that currently I have a RES and is looking to expand my collection. I'm searching for variety actually.

So my question is:

1) Is the price reasonable for such species?.. icon_question.gif notworthy.gif

2) Since I already have a RES, are these two species of turtle too similar to the RES? Or would sifu/Guru here recommend that I look at other species for varieties? Like I mentioned above, I'm would prefer to have a species not too similar to RES (to me i think the yellow-bellied slider is quite similar to RES).

So, currently, I'm also considering venturing into keeping tortoise. smile.gif Hope that Guru and Sifu here can provide some helpful input to my above queries.

Yellow belly will be better as the Chinese Stripe neck has too long a tail to be safe with RES !!

Price is bit high for Stripe-neck as they are price around the RM 12 just 2 years ago !!

Tortoise come in all size - some even as adult only manages few inches while others easily reaches 2 foot or more !! Habitat requirements also differs , some prefer dry grassland type environment , some tropical humid !!

thank you thank you sifu samperth!!!! notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

yes, after careful consideration, maybe tortoise may not b so suitable, unless its Greek or Russian...

for turtle, i can at least get the big blue plastic tank to accomodate the size. smile.gif

hmm.gif looks like yellow bellied seem to b the better choice as per sifu's advise. smile.gif RM48 for 2 incher not too steep?..i know tat Exoreptiles in KL also selling at around RM50, but dunno the size.

quite hard to find good variety of species here in kuching. so pretty much limited to a few fish shop for supplies.

yeap. I frequent such place to check out the turtles. smile.gif another frequent encounter is the asian leaf turtle. otherwise can usually see the malayan box turtle. smile.gif

may consider getting from there, but the size is usually larger than wat i had in mind. preferably would like to see them grow. and the adult size ones are usually picked up fr the wild.

but will definitely check out these place for some species. smile.gif

Ok so here's the current problem with my RES. Scutes on her bottom half are peeling off. One of them has peeled completely and reveals... bone? I'm not sure if that's what it is, but it doesn't look good. The weird thing is that it only affects the bottom half of the scutes, the top half look fine. I also noticed one of its legs jerking violently while basking.

Other than that, she is doing fine. Good appetite, loves basking, and very tame. 6" SCL and about 3 years old.

Peel whatever you can for now ( when dry easier ) And take another picture ( basking lights off pls )

Need to locate the " bone ? " part BUT from the 2 pic you post looks OK except for some unpeeled old scute towards end of carapace !!

What I think is the "bone" is the 2nd-rightmost scute in photo #1. Researched more and think that maybe it's a fungus-infested scute?

I'll peel the rest and take more photos when I get back to them on Monday.

Maybe a Yes about the " fungus infested scute " what people call shell rot !! If it is peeling off and the bottom new scute looks normal color ( except for the uneveness ) then its ok .

If not try soak it in antiseptics - iodine , betadine , S1 for fish ..... A few times a week and keep water clean to kill off infection !!

By which species , and where is it now ? As chelonian eggs should not be rotated soon after being laid and they dehydrate very fast !!

Not sure which species but its the normal green coloured tortoise sold in most aquarium shop. Bought it more than a year ago about bigger than size of 50¢ Coin now about 8"-10" pair.

Its should be Red Ear Slider @ RES and most likely eggs laid inside water - write off already unless pick up as the eggs are laid !!

What you feed them to grow them that fast to reach breeding size so soon ?

Hi, I used to have RES and now I'm thinking of keeping Russian tortoise, have been doing some research on it and seems like its suitable for a semi beginner.. Does anyone know where i can get one with licence? I've messaged reptiles planet & pet studio on fb but have yet to hear from them. Also, what other similar species would you guys recommend if not Russian?

Thanks!
