Microsoft Xbox 720 (aka Durango) Officially Leaked…Maybe

Gamers, get ready: detailed specs for the Microsoft Durango – Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox – have leaked online.

Also known as the Xbox 720, Xbox 3, the NextBox and Next Xbox, the Durango will be powered by an 8-core 1.6 GHz CPU and will also include an 800-MHz graphics processor with 12 shader cores “providing a total of 768 threads.” The console also features 8GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM.

Durango also includes a Blu-ray drive that is capable of reading 50GB Blu-ray discs at x6 read speeds, plus an internal hard drive (the capacity of which is not yet known). In addition, rumors speculate that the system will have “Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware” and an updated Kinect motion sensor bar connected separately from the Durango’s USB 3.0 ports. Other features will include 3D sound and Augmented Reality.

Users can also look forward to a ‘HDMI 1.4a in’, which means that you might be able to hook up a cable or satellite connection. Perhaps the Durango will have recording capabilities?

These specs support earlier leaks that emerged in November 2012. The Durango is widely expected to be released in the final quarter of 2013, preceded by a formal announcement in June. Anticipated Durango game titles include Halo 5, Forza 5, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313.

Xbox 720 may just be named ‘Xbox’

Earlier this morning we posted a story about Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor potentially being called the “Xbox.” The news came from a Pocket-lint report, but now a prankster has come clean to reveal the entire story is a hoax.

We apologize for the error, and it’s something we’ll be keeping an even closer eye on as we approach E3 in June. This particular rumor had an ounce of credibility since it seemed to fit into next-gen Xbox details leaked a few days ago. And I’ll maintain that the name “Xbox 720″ still doesn’t make much sense.

Gamers have taken to the Xbox 720 moniker as they became antsy for a new console — but that name likely won’t work for general consumers. Symbolically, the term “720″ doesn’t have the positive spin that “360″ did. The Xbox 360 ended up being a living room hub that could tackle all of your entertainment needs — a 360-degree solution. Nobody ever talks about a 720-degree solution.

Report: Playstation 4 Specs, Controller Details, And More Info Leak

An individual known as SuperDae has recently leaked over 90 pages of supposed Playstation 4/Orbis information to Kotaku. Among them are details regarding the upcoming console's technical specifications, controller details, and user account system.

According to the report, the new console will feature a Blu-Ray drive, 160GB hard drive, and 2.2GB of video memory. It's worth noting that these are specs for a developer kit, and the hard drive space may change for the retail release.

Similar to the Vita's rear touch screen, the new controller is reported to include a touch pad. The report presumes that this is on the back of the Playstation 4 controller, and that the entire pad can be clicked in. Also on the reported controller is a "share" button, the function of which is unclear at this time.

Check out the full details (including rumors regarding the new user account system) at the Kotaku link above. As always with supposed leaks like this, take it with a grain of salt until official word comes down from Sony at E3 or possibly earlier.

Sony's Kaz Hirai Hints at Xbox 720 Reveal Before PS4

Too shy to go first, Sony?

ZoomWhile Microsoft is keeping pretty quiet about the next generation of the Xbox, Sony has spoken about the PS4 a number of times over the last couple of weeks. Last week, Sony's vice president of home entertainment, Hiroshi Sakamoto, confirmed to Spanish language site Emol that the company's next generation of PlayStation would see an E3 or earlier announcement. However, it seems that though we may see a PS4 announcement in the next six months, the Xbox 720 may actually be announced before the PS4.

According to Sony's President and CEO Kaz Hirai, the company may actually wait for Microsoft to go first to avoid being one-upped. IGN points to a quote in The Times accredited to Hirai, which reads as follows:

"Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?"

Hirai has a point. Cast your mind back to 2011 and the unveiling of the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab at Mobile World Congress. You'll remember that the iPad 2 was unveiled shortly after and Samsung felt threatened enough to go back to the drawing board.

"We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," a Samsung exec was quoted as saying at the time. "Apple made it very thin."

However, while tablets suffer from a relatively short product life cycle, gaming consoles tend to stick around for quite a while. Look at the PS3. It was first launched at the end of 2006. Though it has gone through some changes since then, we haven't seen a completely new PlayStation since then. If Sony's Hiroshi Sakamoto May/June schedule remains true, we learn about the Xbox 720 before E3 as well.

PS4 – rumored kits have new controller, 4x Dual-Core CPU

According to the report, the developer kits contain 8GB of system memory, 2.2GB of video memory, a 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” CPU – which gives it 8 cores, an AMD R10xx GPU,
a Blue-ray drive, 160GB HDD, and 4x USB 3.0 and 2x Ethernet ports. The audio output is HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels.

Again, these specs are not confirmed nor are they final, if this is indeed a developer console.

The system at present supports both the Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers, but there is a new one in development as well, according to the documents.

Called the “Orbis Development Tool”, at present, it still sports the four face buttons, two thumbsticks and shoulder triggers, but contains a capacitive touch pad similar to the one of the back of Vita. It can discern two-point multi-touch and it can also be “clicked” for use as an additional input button.

It will also contain motion-sensing like previous controllers, but tilt correction has been improved. It also still contains vibration, and an RGB LED light. No mention of “biometric” technology was made in the documents, a feature which was rumored over the weekend.

There is also a “Share” button on the controller which Kotaku figures will allow users to share various gameplay activities via social networking sites or possibly work as a screenshot button.

However, it may have something to do with a change to the way user accounts are managed. With PS4, Sony is supposedly implementing “multi-user simultaneous logins.” This will allow more than one user to log into the console at once, linking the user account to the controller.

As the controller syncs, the player will be logged into the PS4 currently in use. Accounts won’t be “locked” to the controller, instead users will be prompted to sign in their account when an extra controller is detected.

This will make things rather easy when you go to friend’s house, plus, the purported documents claim four can be in use at a time, allowing all co-op players to receive trophies together locally. It’s unknown if this will work using PSN as well.

first official recognition of ps4

Quantic Dream Registers SingularityPS4.com Domain

While its current endeavour of Beyond: Two Souls may not even have a fixed release date yet, it seems Quantic Dream is wasting no time on starting its next project.

The French developer has registered the domain name for SingularityPS4.com (spotted by Kotaku). In the past, the company has registered both HeavyRainPS3.com and BeyondPS3.com, so it seems pretty likely that the studio is already working on creating a game called Singularity for Sony's PlayStation 4.

What's really interesting here though is the fact that the domain name has PS4 in it rather than Orbis. Despite rumours to the contrary, this suggests that Sony will be sticking with the 'PlayStation X' naming convention that's served it so well up to now.

The game's unlikely to retail with just the Singularity title though; thanks to the existence of the unsuccessful 2010 shooter, Activision holds all the rights to that name in multiple territories. As was the case with the Beyond domain though, just because a subtitle isn't present initially doesn't mean one won't be attached before the game is officially debuted.

Quantic Dream's current project, Beyond: Two Souls, stars actress Ellen Page and is expected to release sometime this year. Considering it's already been revealed that the script is 2,000 pages long though, it's probably not overly surprising that we haven't got a fixed date just yet.

Xbox 720 anticipation leads to slump in console sales for Microsoft

user posted image

Sales for the Xbox 360 have remained pretty strong, despite the console having been around for longer than any other before it. Microsoft’s most recent earnings report paints a picture of a division for the company that is in decline, and likely due to the anticipation of a next-generation system.

Microsoft saw lower revenue numbers in the quarter, which was largely driven by lower Xbox 360 console sales. The company saw a year over year drop in sales from the same quarter in 2011, despite the console remaining to be the number one seller in North America.

The Entertainment and Devices division which the Xbox 360 falls into, was down about 11 percent in the quarter, but that’s not all attributable to the Xbox 360. The division also includes its Windows Phone businesses and other aspects of the company. Offsetting the fall in revenue, operating income was up due to lower marketing expenses.

Many believe that Microsoft is due to announce the “Xbox 720″ in the coming months, and it won’t come soon enough for the struggling console. This generation has turned out better for Microsoft than they could’ve imagined, but it appears that Microsoft has little left in its bag of tricks to keep the Xbox 360 hopping off store shelves.
