I'm using 1)LAPTOP: inspiron6000 with 1.73ghz, ati x300 128mb, 512mb ddr ram, 60gb hdd. 2)DESKTOP: AMD Barton 2600+, GeForce 5200 128mb, 1gb ddr ram, 80gb 7200rpm hdd. Recently i played a game named "heroes of might and magic IV".When I play it with my desktop, the game runs smoothly without lagging at all. And when I play it with my laptop, the game is lagging badly. I wish to know why my laptop is so slow? Is it because of the processor or some other things? Please guide.

the laptop speed doesn't depend solely on the processor itself. it is a bit of everything in your laptop. from processor to ram, graphic card to hdd, and so on. therefore you can't really compare it with your desktop. you might want to lower your graphics setting in your laptop.

I tried running the game with my task manager on. The processor run at around 40%. Does it mean that my hdd is slow? Should i change it?

it will cost you a bomb to change a notebook harddisk. just bare with it. lower your graphic settings. besides, there might be ton of programmes running behind in your laptop while you're playing your game... however, don't jump into conclusion too quickly saying your hdd is slow and therefore causes the game to lag. think of other possibilities...

I am not too sure what realy affects the speed of the laptop while playing games. But for normal applications, the no1 factor is the RAM. I can reduce the processor speed on my laptop to 600 MHz but everything runs as if it was it was on 1.6 GHz. But once my ram runs out, even on full processor speed, everything is very slow. I don't think Hardisks play such a big role here as I'm using only a 4800rpm HDD and I don't find it slow. I use programs such as MSWord, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PDF Pro, MS Document Imaging, Handwriting recognition and speech recognition, winamp, avant browser, flashget and YIM. Normally I have usually 4 programs running at one time and I don't feel the pinch even when I reduce the processor speed to 600Mhz .

Secondly its the graphics card
X300 is not a state of the art graphics card , the graphics card plays an important role here as well

Don't forget about programs such as LimeWire that run in the background while you are using other applications... These are among the main culprits for causing a PC's speed to slow down...
And just like what jamezco said, disable and (preferably) delete useless programs like those pop-up adware and spyware that are irritating and also causes PC slowdowns... Worthless items!

most of the time, notebook hdd comes with the manufacturer is either 4200 or 5400 rpm, this component (which is the slowest on a pc) will make ur system slow down... so if u really got $$ wanting to upgrade the hdd, get a 7200 rpm 1s... it will help u greatly...
also u can consider upgrading rams as nowadays 512mb ddr sodimm only cost around RM180...

I already used up both slots with 2X256mb. I think its a waste if i threw both of the ram to free up the slot.

remember...
a laptop cant replace a desktop in gaming...
laptop is only use for light works.. desktop u can customize it to suit your needs...
hdd of hardisk also will effect...
normal laptop they use 4200rpm while desktop nowdays is 7200rpm.. and the interface... p-ata and s-ata.. 133 vs 150
ram got ddr and ddr2
graphic...(sure is desktop better lah) dun use laptop to play heavy game like doom 3 or those require high spec.. light game is ok...
