That's why the government plans these:

DTL = relieves EWL congestion

TSL = relieves NSL congestion

DTL is 3 car system, while TSL will be 4 car system

To clarify, the system is not ready for testing yet. Any testing being done is to ensure that the train can respond sufficiently. Currently they are still working on two to three more stations to get everything done. We (y2koh, another friend and I) were invited to view the first train set to arrive last November. The authorities implementing the project said that testing on the tracks would begin in March. We assume that the train was towed to the station for the event to make it feel that the trains were operational. In reality, the tracks are electrified but the trains haven't run on them yet. Still busy setting up for implementation by the end of the year.

As for alleviating the compass line loads. They just unveiled a new line today to be built that mirrors the west to east corridor. That should take off the load from the East West Line as well.

To be honest, I have no idea. The Mandarin names are supposed to sound close to the English names instead of being literal translations. For instance, Buona Vista becomes buo na wei si da.

As for why Chinatown is Cow Car Water,

QUOTE
Life back then [in the 1800s] wasn't easy for the man on the street. Home often meant nothing more than a wooden board to serve as a bed. One would rent bed space in a shophouse, cramped with many others in the room. Sometimes, beds were even shared between people who worked the day shifts and the night shifts. Kitchens and toilets were dirty and shared amongst everyone living in the unit. With barely an infrastructure in place, basic amenities that we've come to take for granted today also weren't available – toilets were basically a bucket in a hole which would fill up over the day, cleared only at night by nightsoil workers who'd go from house to house to replace the filled buckets with empty ones. Fresh water had to be carted in by bullock-drawn carts, the practice of which gave rise to Chinatown's other name – Niu Che Shui, or Bullock-Cart-Water.

Haha, not at all. We belong to a group called Friends of LTA. I guess we seem to be interested in following a line's progress from construction to completion. Anyway, as such, we received an invite to go down and view the train. It was also a chance for the media to see the train for the first time and since we were there, able to answer some questions such as how we felt the new features were good or bad.

Personally, my uncle is a rail civil engineer. So I've picked up a bit of understanding through him and try to follow construction of the lines in detail. Some things are hard to know because majority of the work is underground. So we can only tell from the surface how progress is and supplement that with what we hear from the authority. We also got to visit a construction site at a station along the second phase of this line last year, to get an idea of the scope of works. So yeah, that's how we figure things out. smile.gif

I am curious how the Jurong Region Line will be operated in future.

It's pretty short and it seems there are many branches.

No one knows right now. Its still 12 years to that line. For now, Downtown Line is coming up end of the year.

Stinger82, I guess its good so you can compare the rate of progress when KL is building their MRT. smile.gif DTL1 broke ground in 2008 and is being finished in 2013, roughly 6 years. A lot of it was cut & cover tunneling and stations on the Chinatown side of the bay are shallower than the Bugis side. That side employed a lot more TBM work. So there you have an example of a line that took several years to implement. MRT in KL should take a similar time frame, up to 7 years perhaps.

They are studying the suitability of building the in-fill station there. No time-frame as yet, but they want it to be in tandem with the development of the area which should be within the next 15 years I'm guessing.

Well, some of the route is covered by buses like 23 which is pretty fast to the Jalan Besar area (maybe even faster than Downtown Line will be). 2017 will only bring added convenience.

I agree that the MRT station and Northpoint are very crowded. Right now they haven't committed to anything. But taking the example of Dover station, once they decide to build it, it can probably be done in 2 years time.

The Discovery open houses for Circle Line were organised by LTA, based on what one of the ladies was saying while I was taking the train at the stage 1 & 2 open house. She worked for LTA, probably in the rolling stock department and mentioned to her friend and another person whom she struck up a convo with (and I happened to overhear) that LTA wanted the operator to take the open houses' feedback from public and use the subsequent weeks to work that in before opening for commercial operation. That said, I suppose that there will be open houses for the Downtown Line stations. Prior to that, there should be other activities such as invitations to Emergency Evacuation Exercises. Will let you know as these progress through the year.

Will also keep a look out for signs of trial runs at Bayfront station which is a cross-platform interchange with the Circle Line. This will make it easy to spot trial runs since half the platform is already in use for the other line.

Stage 2 [2015]: Sixth Avenue station
On 17 January, the TBM boring the second drive from the next station, Tan Kah Kee, broke through the retaining wall. This marks the completion of tunneling between these two stations. The first drive was completed by the same machine in September 2012. It was then reassembled at the launch point and sent on its way for the second tunnel.

Most of the signs are in English. They just happen to be in Chinese as it is Chinatown where the majority of people are elderly who don't understand English as well. The station names are translated into Mandarin and Tamil as well for the benefit of these groups, while the Malay names of the stations are largely similar to the English names so it was deemed as not necessary. Additionally, for directional signage, the latest trend has been to use symbols in tandem with words as these can be deciphered more easily. Frankly, I think it means that those who can understand Malay can understand English as both are romanised languages using the alphabet while Mandarin and Tamil use other symbolic character representations.

Yea, they are pretty fast considering.. Would be nice if we could get more pictorial updates though, officially..
Have heard that the new contractor has begun taking over on the stations where the former contractor went bankrupt.. So probably stage 2 will see a delay of only 3 months..

Something that Malaysia forever never learn from Singapore. and im not talking about their MRT.
Is how the nearby road condition is almost unaffected by the construction.

If u look at how terrible is the road condition along Puchong - Bukit Jalil is due to the MRT construction. rclxub.gif

why dont Johor just let SG build their MRT network. I believe sinkie is more than willing to help JB build the MRT. let them extend the network to cover JB as well to make JB + singapore a metropolis.
I don't mind paying SGD for the train fares as trains in SG is not that expensive.

It's not Johor not letting SG to do it, just studies need to be done on certain matters such as alignment (undersea tunnel vs causeway vs bridge), potential political risk, soil condition, cost-benefit ratio and most importantly immigration arrangement. On our side, we can simply upgrade KTM tracks to form KTM Komuter for south Johor area.

LTA will award a tender to one of six shortlisted construction firms to continue work on three Downtown Line stations after its main contractor went bust.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will award a tender to one of six shortlisted contractors to take over development works on the troubled stations - King Albert Park, Sixth Avenue and Tan Kah Kee - of the upcoming Downtown Line (DTL) from the now bankrupt Austrian builder, Alpine Bau.

LTA wants to minimise delay to the project and expects to appoint a company within a month. The six shortlisted companies include McConnell Dowell SEA, Penta-Ocean Construction, Nishimatsu Construction, Samsung C&T Corp, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering and SKEC (Singapore).

The line was originally scheduled to be running by 2015, but Transport Minister, Lui Tuck Yew, informed in Parliament last month of a delay and potential increase in costs to the project.

Chan Weng Tat, Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering told The Straits Times that much depended on 'the smoothness of the handover' on top of agreeing that a four months work suspension would be 'a bit tough to make up'.

Currently, the three stations are looked after by McConnell Dowell to maintain safety and security of the site while concurrently working on the North of the affected portion.

Not too sure at this moment.. There's not much details out or even an exact opening date at the moment.. For the Circle Line, they had Emergency Evacuation Exercises (EEE) for Stages 1 - 5 (Stage 3, Stage 1 & 2, Stage 4 & 5) during the pre-opening where members of the public were pre-selected and/or asked to participate by invitation.. This was for a small group of people only to simulate an emergency where the train needs to be detrained via the evacuation door and walk to the station.. I am assuming that this will be done for the DTL as well, probably inviting the residents near Chinatown station to participate..

All stages of the Circle Line, including the extension this time, had respective discovery open houses allowing the public to ride the trains for free for a few hours on certain days about 2 weeks ahead of opening.. I am assuming that they will do the same again for the DTL as these were used to simulate peak hour travelling along the lines and allowed the operator to make final adjustments prior to opening based on feedback from the public.. It also allowed the public an opportunity to get familiar with the new network addition..

That said, will keep it updated here on any EEE or open houses coming up..

Very good for underground station, it doesn't feel claustrophobic, with tall ceiling height. I hope our MRT will be like this smile.gif

Yes, I like stations like that too.. But some of my transport enthusiast friends don't like it at all.. Oh well, their loss the OCD people..
Anyway, a friend and I are going to cover the upcoming Thomson Line construction once it begins.. So we are testing our formatting on the Downtown Line.. You can take a look at our blog here: http://dtl-construction1.blogspot.com

Would be good if there could be some feedback.. smile.gif We're trying to update what we can..
Shall see if I have more interior photos to add that I haven't already posted here..

Yes, though the motif is traditional Malay motif according to the LTA Connect online magazine.. The Triangle shapes are present on the wall, the ceiling and on the glass paneling..

This is the TBM from Contract 921 Rochor station which broke through to the Queen Street shaft.. So that means that Stage 1 and Stage 2 are now linked by tunnel..

With the Downtown Line, lines will be cross-displaying arrival timings.. Currently, they only show the lines that that station was built for.. For instance, the old section of Dhoby Ghaut only shows the North South Line, the new section only shows North East Line.. But with Downtown Line, they are trying to integrate further.. Yea, that's what they were aiming for. I think Promenade & Bugis did a good job of integrating the art in. The other stations, and especially most of the Circle Line stations failed though, relegating it to one side, wall or section of the station unlike the North-East Line where it is fully integrated in.

Dynamic Testing of a Downtown Line Train
Updated about a week ago

Once the static tests are complete, our new Downtown Line train undergoes dynamic testing on the test track. Here, many of the train functions such as traction and braking are validated.

Each train undergoes further tests when they arrive in #Singapore to ensure that there’s it is in tip top condition even after shipment and road transportation.

Celebrating a lot of breakthroughs now on the Downtown Line. Looks like the TBM for one contract on stage 3 broke through today.

Another had broken through last week to another station.

Several weeks before, the Fort Canning TBM broke through to the Chinatown shaft.

For stage 2, only 2 tunnels are left. One TBM is 9 rings from breakthrough. Another will complete its drive of about 200m remaining in roughly 3 weeks time.

Sounds good, especially for Stage 2 which had been affected by Alpine Bau bankruptcy smile.gif

From what we know, all stations are on target to finish works by July-2015 save the Alpine 3. These stations will only finish works by January-2016. Otherwise, the line is pretty much good to go in 2015, just for the nuisance of Alpine.

All tunneling on DTL2 is completed. The final TBM brokethrough into Sixth Avenue station yesterday. So this marks the completion of all tunnels linking Gali Batu depot to Bugis.
