so im thinking of removing my HU from the car... i wanna use that space to put monitoring meters like water temp, oil temp n oil pressure meters.

but i still may need some radio and maybe play some MP3s. wat are the possible options? i have 2 front speakers and thats about it....

dont need super duper sound quality...just something listenable....

initial thought was a 2ch amp with RCA-3.5" minijack and use HP....but then the MP3s will take up valuable space in the HP. if theres something that can read USB even better biggrin.gif

LOW COST ideas pls biggrin.gif

EDIT: forgot to mention, i do have spare cheapo 2ch amp... just dunno if its working or not.. lets just assume its working biggrin.gif

@madman

realibility, depends on on item price and grade (AA/A/F etc)
d sistacar (myvi) has it for 5years and still functioning well
got it for rm700, this was 5years ago, i think its cheaper now

if you thinking to buy it cheap from cash n carry shop, id only recommend superstar,,,,,

another (+) poin is you can connect its line out to earphone/IEM
so if you drive modded car you still have option to enjoy music w/ good sq
or
youre driving company/borrow car that cannot mod ICE

Aiya, want sound in your car but don't want HU? Buy a bigger memory card for your phone and hook it up to your car la. With or without amp can be done quite easily.

Madman,

If your wife's phone can get radio via headphones, you can connect the phone to the amp and get radio on it. Since she like radio so much, just play radio. No need mp3.

just coz she likes the radio so much...doesnt mean she wont listen to MP3s... she listens to both... just that radio is a lil more often than MP3.

coz sometimes... there are songs that u wanna hear that just arent on the radio...

get a HU with custom fiber glass/racks etc installed to the side of your car, within glove box, under the seat (and pull out when you need to control it, or just use remote) or whatever fancy place you can squeeze into other than the space you want to put your fancy meters where the hu originally sits.

=edit=
yes i realize this thread title, however having a non HU (eg: getting a PMP and then line/aux into an amp/converter) is just too much of a hassle than having an actual HU.

the only alternative to HU is a decent android device with line/aux out to connect to the amp/converter. and that's it. where you want to place the PMP/android/iphone or pod devices etc is your call. however you'll face similar issues, and i believe there's no convenient remote to those devices and you have to plug/unplug them all the time, and may or may not have radio functions.
