I use a simple china brand 2600mah (actual rated is around 1000mah) for emergency can charge iphone to around 30-40% and small enough to put in pocket
total damage less than RM50
1000mAh should be charging it up to or more than 50% already since your battery is only 1440mAh..?total damage less than RM50

the capacity of iphone5 is 1440mAh. the powerbanks' capacity need to be reduced by around 30% (due to energy loss). do the maths yourself

I would say this is partially true only for unwellknown brand power bank, my energizer XP4003 rated at 4000mAH and I can fully charged my iphone 5 about 3 times....3x1440mAH=4320mAH which exceeded the rated capacity of the powerbank itself....somemore energizer is the only brand which currently offering 3 years warranty...
Well in Yoobao's website I once saw that the efficiency loss can go up to 35% (I hope I read it wrongly)Anyway I have ordered a YB Magic cube 4400mAh, should be enough for 2 charges. Didn't need that much of power. Just as emergency.
There is some thread selling 12000mAh china brand at RM70 up. My sister used it and it could charge her S3 for 4 times (she said). Sound OK for that price..
