sketching is not really a must, but it helps u in developing your idea...and drawing is more to detail sketches...

well, unless ur very good in digital illustration, i suggest stick to the ol' pencil and paper...with sketches, u can come up with wacky and new ideas...

i'm a design student, and sketching is a must in my development...and there're here to stay until i digitise and start on screen work...plus, sketches are a great plus to be put into your portfolio...
