Hi everyone...hope I'm in the right forum section to ask for some advice on buying a laptop.

Firstly, I am buying the laptop to take it overseas with me where I will be studying.

I do occasionally game a little (Counter Stike: GO, L4D 2 etc) and I think 15" would be just the perfect size for me.

I'd also prefer Windows 7 and would like to keep the price of the laptop to around RM 3000.

Can anyone recommend a suitable 15" laptop for me within that price range?

I've also taken a look at a few brands such as Dell and HP. The specs for both seem pretty decent.

HP Pavilion M6- 1021TX/1110TX

Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition (7520)

Would the 2 notebooks above be recommended? I think they're not much different, with the exception of the screen resolution. However, I'm not very tech savvy and I can't really point out any other significant differences.

Advice appreciated please. If there are other notebooks that fit the criteria fell free to share as well please!

Thank you!

I know plenty of people who have had very bad experiences with their Lenovo and Acer notebooks. Should I consider? Makes me a bit worried though....I don't think any of these laptops are covered internationally in terms of their warranty.

I think these are the BEST choices already... smile.gif

Lenovo Y580 Special Edition/Limited Edition is very cool! Very silk looking.

You shouldn't get the FHD 1920x1080 one

I'm using a 16" FHD screen (not 15.6") and everything is horribly tiny
Windows does not scale well... I also have to zoom in every damn webpage I go to or it will be un-readable, this includes FB too... Not to mention even MS Office documents I view all have to be like zoomed 120 or 130% (PDF docs at 150%)

As for software, everything is also pretty small and you have to enable some-thingy I forgot in Windows to enlarge the text, for some programs that aren't well coded, they look really ugly and often have text running out the button/window.

Having those extra pixels for such a little screen is not only unnecessary, but also hampers your performance when gaming. Your GPU needs to work harder to pump more pixels...

Only one benefit - Full HD movies (which I watch once in a blue moon)

I had to learn that the hard way.
My advice: Never buy FullHD for gaming.

edit-
also don't forget to watch the weight of the laptop
When I first bought my laptop, I only looked purely at specs and price, big mistake. I now carry 10 bricks around all over.

As cool as they look, and as nice as the specs are...I think I'd pass on these two brands. I don't think they'd be as reliable as HP or Dell honestly, although I may be wrong. It's just what I hear from family and friends who have used these brands before.

Haha...this laptop is just temporary. Will only be taking it around for a month or two and then after that I'll more or less use it as a desktop as I'll be getting a thinner laptop then.

Anyway...I always thought HD screens would be better D=

Is there any way I could scale this thing down? If not I can actually choose another Dell notebook with the exact same identical specs, but with the resolution at 1366 x 768

Edit: I can also choose between FHD Anti Glare/ HD WLED True Life (no idea what the differences between these two are) at 1366 x 768.

Scaling on Windows is horrible, not just browsing, but in their softwares as well... Don't bother

Notice that the width of FB is only half my display.
AND just compare that to my touchpad (standard touchpad size). Notice the BMW photo on FB is same as my touchpad size? Is that how small you want your stuff to be on your huge screen? Since the photo is already so tiny, how is the text readable?

To get a better idea, try out a FHD laptop at a shop

And you'll also get less FPS when gaming

If I change the resolution to 1366 * 768 will I still get the same problem? Or would I have to get rid of the FHD part entirely? Thanks for your advice by the way!

As much as I like the looks of some of the Lenovo and Acer notebooks...I doubt their longetivity.

I think Asus/Toshiba wouldn't be that bad as well actually.

Lenovo isn't as bad as you thought. At least this brand won't suddenly give you some funny issue
Acer then really got some issue with their lower budget models.

I really don't know. From the people close to me that I hear from, none of them have liked their Lenovo's.

Imo its all up to how you take care of your notebook. I've had two acer laptops in the past. So far only problem i've had in the past 4years using one of the acer notebook is the battery. It has given up but i've seen the same problem on my father's dell inspiron laptop which is 2years of age. To me i'd say the best you may get is a lenovo y580. If still nt interested , maybe you could try looking @asus notebooks. There's some pretty decent ones with the same price point your looking for.

Haha...that's pretty true also. I don't really provide the best of care to my laptops. I've been going through Asus as well but their website is a bit tedious to go through one by one. I'll pay a visit to their store when I have time I suppose. Thank you!

I'm looking for 15" and that's pretty firm smile.gif The Dell is similar to the one I posted above and I'd choose the Inspiron over the Vostro to be honest. Thanks anyway!

Anyway...as how YSC has put it...if I want to game on a laptop I shouldn't be using a FullHD/1920 * 1080? I wouldn't mind compromising on the resolution but I remember coming across a review that day that the 1366 * 768 resolution isn't very nice to look at or something like that.

I've pretty much narrowed everything down to either a Dell, Asus, HP. Taking a look at Toshiba now but they're a lil bit more pricy.

Lenovo Y580 is best bang for buck.
Another one is ILLEGEAR R-11 Promotion kinda great deal I think.
