how big is your tank? if you have 4ft and above, maybe you can try derick as he sells industrial type of ac fans which could be really useful.
if not just search up for a DIY fan online, it's kinda easy to do it if you follow the instruction carefully... =)

mine is just a extremely nano tank lol. i use it to experiment with moss growth
25cm tank. about 4.5-5 litres only.
really really need to find a fan.. sad.gif

night time no problem with temp but afternoon sucks lol

i read that moss do not grow well if it's too near to the light source.. is it true? reasoning?
how far should mosses be away from light source?

moss also need light + nutrients to grow. even though i failed on many occasions to grow moss  properly which is really a lot of ppl say is the most hardy plant, i'm at loss with this plant.

to your question, the moss will die if the water temp is too high. if too much light n no nutrient also it will not grow. i don't think they will die from too much light.

*pls take this with a pinch of salt* smile.gif
*
what if the light is near yet the water temp is 23'c?

I guess u need to monitor the moss responses.

what i notice is that moss will try to adapt to your water parameters first. they may seem stationary with no growth (not going brown ; coz brown means dead). then maybe a few days later, they will start to give our small n brighter green tips. these bright green tips is the new growth.

so i would think that if ur mosses are going brown, means they are not good with the light, u shld move them away to lower brightness area (move light upwards or the moss further down the tank...

if anyone got a better experience, i stand corrected. smile.gif
*
alright.. so basically there's no 'recommended' distance from light source to moss/water level right? as long as the water temp is between 22-25'c?
seems like a trial & error /experimentation kind of thing to me..
my small moss tank is to observe how some mosses grow depending on the way it's attached to objects.
eg: xmas moss as a wall, as a 'carpet' on lava rock, on a vertical wood & on a horizontal wood.

light & temp will be kept constant..

*this will be applied after observing if my current light is 'too near'*

thanks for the info

haha! you got me there! LOL
for now i just wanna get my temp & light steady smile.gif
still deciding on which part of my house to put the tank lol..

ac room: night time temp too low, afternoon high temp *but can be adjusted accordingly by fan*

upstairs hall: night time & afternoon high temp *but can be adjusted accordingly by fan*

oh by the way, due to curiosity & boredom, i tried putting a sanding fan facing the water, temp dropped way too much.. lol.. i think to about 16 degrees C + ac room.

put a glass of water or pail of water with fan that u r going to use n measure the temps in both areas.  from there u will get an idea of the water temp for your future tank.

my guess is that u will end up @ upstairs.

i call it test water before dunking urself into it! biggrin.gif
*
im thinking the thing also. hahah!
thats what im doing to test baseline water temp at both places *without fan cause i dont have a fan yet* (standing fan is too rediculous)
the problem is the container that im using is not the same size as compared to my aquarium.. = diff water volume = might effect water temp right? i think

why all the trouble, as its proven fan power can only drop 2'c to max 4'c from room temp, just measure your room temp. will do.
There is the limit of fan, else no one gonna buy chiller.
Rules is bigger tank need bigger fan like bigger tank need bigger chiller to perform effectively.
*
i tried that & found out that my water temp & room temp is of different value.. :/

QUOTE(jctasoga @ Feb 21 2013, 04:23 PM)
yes, different volume will affect the end temp. but if u calculate it pro-rata basis, u will get a rough idea. we're not scientist so any value we get is just a rough idea only...

its a hobby dear... dun be so frus abt it.
*
haha! no harm learning & trying my best ma tongue.gif

Then easy, just measure the water temp, using 2'c to max 4'c rule , you can determine the min and max temp for your tank while using fan cooling.
*

yup thats what i'm doing now..
thanks

if your aquarium is located nearby open window or good air circulation place you can get temp at 24C with just fan. Tried before with nano setup.
*
alright.. thanks smile.gif
this is my 1st tank upstairs and it's warmer upstairs compared to below floor.. thats why i have to test.. hehe
testing container is currently 28'C without fan.

yeah i put my aquarium upstairs too but nearby a window, so the temp will drop till 24C during the night and will rise back (after 12pm) 26C on a hot day. But need to top up water everyday, very troublesome.

Thanks for the advice, I will take note on this. May I know at least how many yamato shrimps should I put in my 2ft tank as currently I have

i)  7 cardinal tetra
ii) 3 guppies
iii) 1 otto

and will these fishes compatible with yamato?, especially these guppies? (scare these yamato will nip guppy tail) hmm.gif
Anyone got experience putting yamato with guppy togather? will they get alone together happily? rclxm9.gif
*
they will
