Hi nexus! Would like to check where can I view online the acer laptop you mentioned here? Tried googling the exact model but all the ones that came up does not have a full hd IPS display even on the acer website. Would appreciate your help!

Btw the acer one (only if it really does have a full hd IPS display),  asus N56VZ-S4284H, and Dell inspiron 15R special edition, which one is the best?

Also does the Dell come with a separate numeric keypad?

Thanks! smile.gif

Can find the quote in one of re-sellers website here.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-A...ok.88610.0.html
Review here. Specs may differ slightly.

The best? How to define tongue.gif
Screen - The Acer win (it is FHD IPS smile.gif ).
GPU - The Asus win slightly.
CPU - Tied.
Keyboard - Dell (personal preference)
Touchpad - Don't like the Asus (very personal preference laugh.gif) The other 2 ok.
Sound - Asus (the sound card support 5.1 laugh.gif )
Aesthetic - This is subjective. But lots of people like the Asus.
Warranty - Dell in Malaysia. But if you are bringing it back to Australia, need to extend the Dell warranty to 3 years to get International Warranty. Acer is 1 year international, Asus 2 year International.

Dell 15" for Inspiron and Vostro don't come with dedicated numpad. Some like it (centred keyboard with touchpad), number crunchers hate it laugh.gif

Go out and look at the real things, ok? smile.gif

This is one of the main strength of 14R-5421.
It is spec with ULV CPU, and has nice 65 WHr battery. The battery performance is actually a lot better than lots of those 14" ultrabook out there laugh.gif You can run 5 hours normal usage (wireless surfing, video ... ). (If you later on swap in a SSD, battery performance will be even better laugh.gif )
But don't game on battery. Game performance normally suffer, battery drain fast smile.gif

is it easy to install own ssd? i know some need to dismantle the whole thing to gain access to the hd.
will it void the warranty btw

do you know if it is removable battery or not? haha sorry for many questions

Do you mean is it easy to access the HDD bay? The answer is Yes to that question. A few screws and you can get to the RAM slots and HDD bay.
No, for Dell, it will not void the hardware warranty if owner upgrade RAM or HDD/SSD aftermarket.

The battery is not within the case, if that's what you mean. You can remove the battery easily from the laptop.

QUOTE(barca96 @ Mar 10 2013, 12:51 PM)
If I were to go all out and go for a 15 inch laptops, I have Asus N56 in my mind.
However after checking the price and specs it seems that S56 has a better spec isn't it?
S56 has a better processor and it has SSD which the N56 lacks.
Is there a bay for SSD in the N56?

One thing that I do know that N56 has over the S56 is the backlit keyboard but I don't think that is necessary.
It's not like I don't have lights at home  biggrin.gif
It is beautiful but it is only needed in the dark I think.

I don't really need an ultrabook nor a touchscreen.
Just need a big estate screen because I sit long hours behind the laptop and my eye sight is pretty poor.
I don't need something super fast as I don't play games.
Just need to browse the web a lot, upload HD photos, watch movies/shows, Excel & Word.
That's about it.

Thanks
*
The N56VZ has more powerful spec than S56CM.
The CPU in S56CM is U(ultra Low Voltage) CPU, which consume less power, but also less powerful than the M(obile) CPU in N56VZ).
The GPU in N56VZ is more powerful than that in S56CM.
N56VZ also has more RAM (but RAM is cheap now, 4G stick is ~ RM80), bigger HDD (again HDD is cheap now, the price differential between 500G & 750G is < RM50).
N56VZ also has a much better speakers and sound card (support 5.1).
The mSATA SSD in S56CM is small and is factory default for caching (you can't install apps or save file in it unless you go into BIOS to change setting).

If the laptop is going to be on a desk most of the time and you really like big big screen, consider this cheap 17":
Lenovo
Ideapad G780, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M + (1600x900)@RM2399[3.0kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm); W7HP

It's not as pretty as the Asus, but the screen is bigger, and with higher resolution (HD+) compared to the Asus, you will be able to see more things in Words and Excel (less scrolling). Of course, on the other hand, it is more heavy smile.gif

Hi all,

Need recommendation on buying new notebook :

1. Preferred Brand: Asus g55 or lenovo y580
2. Budget:below rm6k
3. Usage: gaming and long hours in front of the notebook.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 15.6"
5. Additional Remarks: good service after sales.

My only problem is which one give more value to my money? i read many complaints on ASUS service after sales...but the g55 itself is better than lenovo y580..really need fast advice..
*
With that kind of budget, you could look past Asus or Lenovo tongue.gif
This one:

www.illegear.com
Illegear RS-15, i5-3210M + AMD HD7970M + (1920x1080)@RM5299, 8GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i5-3210M - i7-3940XM][GPU options: GTX680M]

GPU blow both G55 or Y580 out of water. Fully customisable. Good after sales services.
Illegear is a group of Malaysian selling Clevo barebone. Look for Prince J in LYN forum if you want to find out more.

need a recommendation

budget around rm2500-3000. purpose is for gaming. i do not mind if it is heavy, as this laptop will only move  around my home for gaming comfort purpose. and it must be larger than 14inch. I believed with gaming spec, I can do most of the photo editing stuff. I think i can accept most of the brands except lenovo.

Well, your budget won't get you powerful GPU in 15".
Gaming, at your budget, is more concern with GPU. Photo editing, in case you did not know, make use of CPU smile.gif

Thanks for the reply bro. Does the GPU affect movie picture quality? Actually i was thinking get a dedicated GPU but he doesnt play games.. well.. maybe very simple games like tetris and mahjong kind.. tongue.gif
Will consider the above. But 17" is too big la and heavy.. hard to carry around. W7 preference is because he needs us to teach him use. All of us in the family not familiar with W8.
*
Intel HD 4000 can handle FHD movie already smile.gif So your uncle definitely don't need dedicated GPU from Nvidia / AMD.
Is your uncle using it at home or have to carry it out of house? If only at home, that G780 is actually not that bad. The best is you go out and scout a unit, then bring your uncle to test it himself rclxms.gif

Don't attempt to teach W8 to your uncle tongue.gif Videos (youtube), articles, manual (brands like Asus, Dell, Lenovo actually has booklet that tell users how to use W8 smile.gif ) If your uncle never learn W7 or earlier before, he is actually less "blocked" to new ideas in W8 compared to people like us who are used to the old ways laugh.gif

The R-11 is basically a Clevo barebone W110ER. Read this review for thermal profile with i7:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Clevo-...ok.75104.0.html
Please note specs may differ (illegear may use different components)
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2654625
Read this for actual picture of R-11 by users smile.gif

Don't think you need the i7. i5 paired with GT650M should be enough to handle most games at HD resolution. If you connect to external display with FHD, you are more likely capped by the GT650M first smile.gif

Yes, of course. MS allow you to install W7 into new machine.

Practically, for normal user purpose, FREEDOS mean the laptops don't come pre-installed with OS and don't have OS license. Buyer has to buy/find OS separately.

thanks for your reply. do i have other choices other than dell?
Prefer brand: any

Budget: 2500

screen size: 13 or 14"

light/portable

long battery life

can play d3
for accountant.
*
It's not easy to get 13" with your budget tongue.gif Look for 14".
If you want light and portable, then look for 14" ultrabook.
Accountant normally need to punch lots of numbers. But 14" don't come with dedicated numpad. So you should get one of those external numpad. Logitech has a few models that is pretty good (~RM80 should do).
14" normally come with 1366x768 (HD) resolution, and Diablo 3 at that resolution can be handled by mid level discrete GPU easily smile.gif

Asus
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
HP
Envy4-1238TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M@RM2099[Beats][1.75kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8 (this one is the 14" ultrabook with the best GPU, also come with 2 speakers+subwoofer laugh.gif )

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
Use your remaining budget to increase RAM (4G sticks is ~ RM80), extend warranty (HP, 3 years), or swap the HDD for a SSD (128G ~ RM300+/-).

Except for Crysis 3, games like Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Call of Duty : Modern Warfare / Black Ops 2 , Assassin's Creed 3 and Batman Arkham City should be playable with medium settings right ? If high possible or not ?
And do you think I should get a higher specs of laptop or this laptop should be able to cope with me for the next 2 years before I get into university ? ( I am in Form 4 now, but of course I think it will last longer than 4 years )
Because I am abit worried that after a few years more, this laptop will be abit hard to play future games or will get abit laggy.
*
If you want to play some of those games you listed at high setting, you need high end mobile GPU (GTX675MX or higher), and you need to spend close to RM5k for laptops that come with that spec smile.gif
If you have that kind of budget, then consider this:

www.illegear.com
Illegear RS-15, i5-3210M + AMD HD7970M + (1920x1080)@RM5299, 8GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i5-3210M - i7-3940XM][GPU options: GTX680M]
Fully custumisable. Good warranty support.

If your budget is < RM3k, the most powerful GPU you can get is this:
Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799, 4GB, 500GB, W8, 120wPSU, swappable ODD
