The link that you provide is this:
Inspiron 14-3421, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1649[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell; W8SL@RM1899
You are ok with no OS?
Your budget was RM1.5k?
Nearest to the one you list are these:
Lenovo
G480, i5-3230M + Intel HD4000@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB (5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

I remember you mention you only play 2D games, FB games? Nothing GPU intensive at all?
Plus your other usage is also not CPU demanding.
If you budget is really tight, look for Ivy Bridge i3 (i3-3xxxM) with Intel HD 4000. It satisfy your usage requirement.

thank you very much, Nexus bro for your help!

I have some extra questions:

Normally i can arrange with the laptop sellers to upgrade the HDD to SSD? It will not affect warranty?
In this case, i should choose the cheapest of the choices mentioned above, and then just upgrade the HDD and RAM right?

Envy4-1238TX - i check on their website, and it says only 2GB RAM.

between ASUS and HP, which one do u prefer? thanks
*
Laptop normally has those "warranty void if broken" seals all over the place if you open the panels.
You normally will not find those seals at HDD bay. If you upgrade the HDD to SSD, your SSD warranty is from the SSD brands (which normally come with 3-5 year warranty). It will not void the overall hardware warranty of your laptop.

Yes, that's what I said. Just look for model that come with HDD only (don't even bother about those with mSATA SSD + SATA HDD). Just replace the HDD with 256G SSD and you will be very happy smile.gif Do a clean install of OS, avoid all the HP bloatware.

Yes, you are right. The Envy4-1238TX is only with 2G RAM tongue.gif Upgrade to 4G or more (4G sticks is ~ RM80). It has 2 RAM slots.

At this juncture, I have to keep controlling myself from being seduced by Asus due to Asus Malaysia iffy warranty support services laugh.gif

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a laptop within this range:

Budget : within Rm 1600.
Brand : Any.
Purpose : Normal usage(internet surfing and Office) and probably gaming.

Thanks

Whats the difference between the Intel processors and AMD? Which one is better?
*
When you said "probably gaming", what game titles you have in mind?

For current gen CPU, AMD lost big time to Intel in terms of CPU performance (highest A10 may get whacked by i3 sweat.gif ). AMD IGPU is still better than Intel IGPU (HD 4000). But for your budget, you could get some low end discrete GPU which is better than IGPU from either.

Dell
Inspiron 14 (3420), i3-3110M + Nvidia GT625M@RM1599[2.1kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8
Inspiron 14-3421, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1649[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell; W8SL@RM1899

Lenovo
G480, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1499, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Okay Thank you both for your reply, i do have a few queries however.

I currently have a dell xps 14 and i am various problems have arised within the laptop and they claim that my OS (W8) is corrupted and so they have approved me for a refund.  So i am left to buy a new laptop and i was reviewing my options;

Dell - Alienware
MX14,  i7-3630QM + 2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GT650M with Optimus, 8GB RAM, 750GB + 32GB SSD
Asus
Zenbook UX32VD,  i7 3517UM + NVIDIA GT620M, 4GB RAM, Up to 500GB With 24 G SSD Or up to 256GB With 256 G SSD

I am really looking at this alienware as it it very customizable which can ending up suiting my price range, what do you think?
*
3 very different models, and all much more expensive than the budget in your original post laugh.gif

The Dell XPS 14 is a 14" ultrabook with GT630M.
The UX32VD is a 13" ultrabook with GT620M.
The M-14x is a little giant weight 3kg (and the spec you list is RSP ~ RM5.5k)

What is your budget? What is your usage? How much weight can you handle?

Well talking with my parents we can squeeze a budget of 1550 for a customized alienware, usage being a tiny bit of gaming and a lot of autodesk using things like engineering programs house designing programs, and to be honest weight doesn't bother me one bit due to the fact that i carry it in a backpack with all my other items and its usually on a desk or on my lap.

Halfway through reading this email i realised that while i was on the dell website i was in the US option, which have ultimately destroyed my dreams of getting an alienware.  (I live in Australia)
*
Oh boy laugh.gif What a mis-understanding we have here smile.gif You talking about Aussie Dollar. Whole different ball game altogether rclxms.gif

For AUD1.4k, you can get a lot of love smile.gif

Can only comment about models that is available in Malaysia though smile.gif
Yes, you should go for i7 quad core (i5 mobile CPU is only duo core), the Autodesk programs can make use of the additional power (can render at home, don't need to use college's machine).
Definitely opt for FHD screen for more work space.

To h*e*l*l with Alienware. If you want that kind of power and bling bling, look for Clevo barebone in Australia.

Consider these (all prices are in Ringgit Malaysia. Current FX rate is ~ AUD/MYR 3.15. However, laptop in Msia is cheaper as we don't have GST here). Obviously, specs may differ slightly.

Allrite. But what about the Asus bro? Ive heard that the A43S is good but its kinda an old model rite?
And also the Asus A55VD?

Games like Borderlands, FIFA and such bro.
*
A55VD-SX520/521/522H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT610M@RM2149[2.52kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8; colors: white/blue/red

A55VD, 1 is over your budget. Both are lower spec than what were suggested earlier.

A43S? - 2011 model, using 2nd gen core CPU (at best), the best GPU is only ~ GT630M range, iinm.

FIFA is not GPU demanding. Borderlands 2, you need GT630M or better to play reasonably at med setting at 1366x768 resolution.

If you absolutely must have Asus, then closest:

A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
K46CM-WX059V, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD

Don't understand smile.gif
The 15R SE after extend warranty to 3 years on site only come to RM3448 (i just tried tongue.gif How do you get RM3.7k?). Negotiate, it will go back down to RM3.1k easy smile.gif

Take a deep breath smile.gif You mean the "Fn" key is always activated? Do you by accident hit the "Fn" key twice (2 presses in quick succesion)? (There is a setting in BIOS for some models of laptop whereby if you hit "Fn" twice is stay "on" ) (There are also option is BIOS whereby "Fn" keys are set to be always on).

If it is really keyboard problem, quickly bring it back to the re-seller and ask for 1-to-1 exchange tongue.gif
So sorry this happen to you smile.gif

Thanks bro..i would probably consider between the suggested laptops. One more question. Between both the laptops, which of the has better service and so on? Never experienced both this brands before. And where can i get either these model in Lowyat? Thanks biggrin.gif
*
Do you mean the Dell Inspiron 14 and the Lenovo G480?
The Dell Inspiron 14 come with 1 year on site warranty support service (on site mean if you laptop experience any hardware problem, you call Dell, after remote diagnostics, Dell will send technician to your place to fix it, you don't need to send laptop to SC).
The Lenovo G480 come with 1 year warranty. If you live around KL, if experience any hardware problem, send it to SC run by IBM (not the one in LYP tongue.gif ), better services.
Both brands has much better reputation and owners experience in terms of warranty support services compared to Asus Malaysia laugh.gif
You can find both brands easily in LYP. Dell can be bought online as well through Dell Online (accept credit card with no extra charges). You can also check out reputable re-sellers right here in LYN garage sales forum smile.gif

Yup, RM34xx is the going price for Y500 now smile.gif You do notice the RSP is RM3799 right, 10% discount without negotiation tongue.gif
Laptop above RM3k has ok margin for brands. Getting ~ 10% off (your target) is not hard smile.gif
The trick with Dell is that you can actually online negotiate with a few agents laugh.gif Just straigth up and ask for RM3.1k. They give you buy, they don't give, go to another agent tongue.gif

Anyway,I wonder got people that using Lenovo Y400 would want to buy the extra GPU unit? If they want,I could buy a Lenovo Y500 and sell the extra GPU unit to them biggrin.gif:D
*
Don't worry about the Y400. There are a lot of people out there who actually bought those Y500 grey import units without the ultrabay GPU. If you indeed go for Y500, you could easily off load your ultrabay GPU for ~ RM500+ smile.gif
Do note that Y500 (due to the SLI setup) don't support Nvidia Optimus, i.e. the GT650M is always on and the Intel HD4000 was disabled permanently, so the battery performance is worse compared to models that can make use of the HD4000.

Kay so I've decided to go for Lenovo Z480 or 580. Are the screens glossy or matte btw? And any opinions on the Z500? It looks pretty good, but I haven't been able to find any good reviews on it...
Also, are they easily available in stores? Do I need to pre-order or anything like that?
Thanks y'all! biggrin.gif

Glossy screen.
Z400 and Z500 are so new, you hardly find any review on them smile.gif
Lenovo Z series is quite easy to find in stores (KL, Penang, ... )

Taking Y480 into consideration now too. That should be pretty easy to find as well, right? Seems like a decent machine.
*
Not many matte screen for consumer laptop (except Samsung, which matte screen is the norm rather than exception laugh.gif )
Cheap alternative is to buy a matte screen protector.

You are late to the Y480 party smile.gif It's EOL. If you find any brand new unit now, it is probably grey import.

Those "background processes" are called bloatware for a reason you know laugh.gif
