You want large screen size, but not too heavy. (So what size do you have in mind? 13" 14" 15"? What is the weight that you can handle? smile.gif
"Graphics should not be too bad, but gaming is secondary" hmm.gif

Ok, 15" "ultrabook" for you:

Asus - generally quite good in terms of spec / price. But warranty support in Malaysia is dodgy.
Toshiba - I find it expensive for the specs, but some owners like the design. Also make sure you are ok with the keyboard. Personally, my fingers revolt from typing on current Toshiba keyboard laugh.gif

Guys, please recommend me a good ultrabook here. thanks  notworthy.gif

1. Preferred Brand: Any brands, but i want good after sale service, and also the best cooling system available. The current laptop that i use keep overheat like 90-100 degree one.
2. Budget: below rm4000
3. Usage: I wanna bring it around, so it have to be portable. Not gonna play games on it so graphic is not a problem. But sometimes i would like to connect it to HDTV and watch 1080p movies.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Nothing smaller than 13". I need bigger screens for convenience.

thank you very very much!
*
Good after sale service - In Malaysia, that mean Dell, Lenovo (if upgrade warranty), HP ....
Your current laptop overheating could be due to dust clog up in internal fan, air inlet / outlet. Clean it up, re-apply thermal paste, and see how it go.
You should do this for the new laptop you are going to buy as well (i.e. keep it dust free, otherwise the same heat up problem will happen).
As long as the laptop has HDMI port, you can connect it to HDTV to watch 1080p movies. Intel HD 4000 IGPU can handle 1080p well.
"nothing smaller than 13" " - that mean 13" is ok right?

QUOTE(medwolf @ Jan 26 2013, 11:56 AM)
Hello all the sifus!
Can I know which one is better in term of performance and their pros and cons.
Asus A45vs vs lenovo z480 vs dell inspiron 14r SE
And for my sister I'm thinking of buying her lenovo g485. Is there any other laptop that have similar/better performance in this range of price? Not more than rm1500. Just for school work and watching videos...
*
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
Z480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2099, 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm) W8, colors: grey/red/blue

In terms of performance - all 3 are even steven smile.gif
Z480 has the largest HDD, but you could easily ask re-sellers to throw in the HDD upgrade (price differential < RM100) for free if you negotiate for the other models.
A45VS has less RAM, but again, can get re-sellers to upgrade RAM (4G stick ~ RM80) for free smile.gif
Dell has the better warranty support service (NBD onsite). Asus / Lenovo has the longer warranty period (2 years).
Other than these, it is just a matter of aesthetic and personal preference (colour, screen, keyboard, touchpad, general look and feel ...) which only you can determine.

G485, E300 + AMD HD@RM999, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS; W8@RM1099
Not much alternative at this price point sweat.gif But the AMD E300 is about Intel Atom level, maybe can consider these:
Lenovo
G480, B830 + Intel HD3000@RM999, 2GB, 500GB (5400rpm), FreeDOS; W8@RM1199
Dell
Inspiron 14, B820 + Intel HD@RM999[2.1kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

If you increase your budget to RM1.5k:
Dell
Inspiron 14-3421, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1449[1.99kg], Win8SL, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell
HP
Pavilion Sleekbook 14-b051TU, i3-2367M + Intel HD3000@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8
Lenovo
Z485, A8-4500M + AMD HD7450M@RM1599, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8
G480, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB (5400rpm), FreeDOS
S400, i3-2365M + AMD HD7450M@RM1699[1.8kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB
Samsung
NP370R4E, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB, W8

Price are RSP, negotiable.

Thanks for the reply.  notworthy.gif

May I know comparing

XPS 14, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA+ 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM3749[2.1kg], 4GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8

and

Envy [Ultrabook] (Spectre) 14-3111TU, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + (1600x900 Radiance) + 128GB SSD@RM3999[1.8kg], 4GB

which one would u recommend?
Cuz currently I'm using a HP laptop, yes i clean up the heat sink frequently but still it always overheat.
Read online and it says that HP are poor in the cooling system..

So i think dell xps 14 is a better choice?
*
Mind telling us which old HP model that you have now?
Have you tried re-applying thermal paste?

Between the 2:
XPS14 - has a more powerful GPU, come in handy when you do something more graphically intensive. Spill resistant keyboard is good. I also find the keyboard in this has good feedback. Dell has better warranty support.
Envy Spectre 14 - ligther. The Radiance screen is nice (viewing angle, colour ... ). Full SSD, so responsiveness is better than the XPS 14 spec.

Ultrabook, due to the thinness, actually has even less space to dissipate heat compare to normal laptop.
But generally, don't hear too many complaint regarding these 2 models in terms of heat.
I strongly suggest you go out and look and feel these 2 models. Some people simply fall in love with the Spectre 14 smile.gif

using HP G42 series. Havent try to change the thermal paste yet. It's only exactly 2 years old.
I reformat it back into factory settings, put it on idle, the temperature is about 40++ degree celcius. How is that even possible right?

XPS14 seems good with the 630M. Do u think it will overheat if i play only FIFA 13 on it?

If the cooling system is okay i might get XPS14 + upgrade the SSD if possible.

spectre looks like apple's macbook. design not innovative enough  yawn.gif
*
Yup, your HP G42 sounds awfully "hot" sweat.gif
Since you mentioned you have clean up the heat sink frequently, then the only possible hardware problem is the thermal paste or the fan itself (did you hear the fan rev up? I don't have access to G42, you may want to go into BIOS and see if there is any setting to set the fan at always max. Or you may want to try speedfan and see if it is able to control the laptop fan).

FIFA 13 is not too GPU demanding, won't be taxing the GT630M too much smile.gif

Going for full SSD actually will help the laptop thermal profile as well (HDD is one of the major heat source).

Generally for ultrabook, I still think it's better to get a cooling pad (or some other ingenious solution) if you plan to game on it tongue.gif

Hi! So I was hoping I could get some recommendation on a laptop for me and my father.

1. Preferred Brand: Sony or Acer
2. Budget: 6000-8000 USD
3. Usage: playing on facebook, business travelling, browsing
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 11.6-14"
5. Processors: I3 / I5 / I7
6. Preferred battery life: 6-cell, or at least 5 hours

I'm considering the some following options:
- Sony Vaio 14126
- Sony Vaio 14122
- Acer V3-471G
- Acer V5-471G

Could you please help me to decide..?

Many Thanks  notworthy.gif
*
Other sifus have given you lots of good suggestions smile.gif
However, if your dad prefer something more "business look", you may want to consider these:

Dell
Latitude E6230, i5-3360M + Intel HD4000@RM4550, 4GB, 320GB(7200rpm), W7P(32-bit)/W8 Pro (64-bit), 3-cell; [CPU options: i3-3360M-i7-3520M
Latitude E6330, i5-3320M + Intel HD4000@RM4380[1.65kg], W7P (32-bit), 3 years Pro support; [CPU options: i5-3320M-i7-3520M]
Latitude E6430u, i5-3427U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM4500, 4GB, W8Pro, 3 years Pro support; [CPU options: i5-3427U - i7-3667U]
You could get slice battery that attach to the bottom of these laptop, in total 2 batteries could last you 10+ hours during long flight thumbup.gif Also customise for full SSD for any of these models, it will improve battery performance.

Lenovo
Thinkpad X1 Carbon, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD (1600x900)@RM5399[1.36kg], 4GB, W7P, backlit keyboard, no ODD

One of the advantage of these business laptop is that they are better build for the rumble tumble of long distance travelling.

If you prefer something more chic, then perhaps:
Apple
MacBookAir 13", i5-3427U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3699[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookAir 13", i5-3427U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM4599[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

virus? nope. reset to factory settings after few hours then also liddat.

absolutely i'll buy a cooling pad for my future ultrabook.

Do u think it's a great time to get the XPS 14 now, or shall i wait until it comes out with a new variant/model?
*
How long can you wait? smile.gif
When Intel push out the Haswell this year, they will mandate all ultrabook must have touchscreen (at least that's what is being announced).
If you follow CES 2013, apparently there is a prototype of XPS 14 that has a flippable screen (just like the one in XPS 12) sweat.gif
But Haswell is most probably late (Q3) 2013.

Since you like to clean your laptop, the good thing about XPS 14 is that once you open the back panel, you have full access to all the components, very easy to maintain.
If you want to go SSD aftermarket, the SSD must be thin (< 7mm) to fit in. So a lot of popular SSD brands / models are out. Have seen some videos where users strip the SSD of external case to fit in ultrabook sweat.gif

Are the toshiba's on sale in Malaysia? I only get US sites. Thanks for the Lenovo. Added that to the shortlist. What is the price on that one?

Currently viewing Dell latitude series as well.
*
Lenovo
ThinkPad X230, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM4059, 4GB, 320GB(7200rpm), 3 years on-site warranty, external USB OD

Dell
Latitude E6230, i5-3360M + Intel HD4000@RM4550, 4GB, 320GB(7200rpm), W7P(32-bit)/W8 Pro (64-bit), 3-cell; [CPU options: i3-3360M-i7-3520M]

These are not as light as the Toshiba, but light enough. And they are build tough, suitable for long distance travel. For most ideal battery performance, can opt for additional slice battery that attach to the bottom of laptop, in total can last 10+ hours under normal usage thumbup.gif

any suggestion on cheap laptop?

1. Preferred Brand: other than Acer
2. Budget: rm1200
3. Usage: surfing internet, typing documents, watching movies, light gaming, must be durable(because so many kids in house, they tend to drop things off table)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14" or 15"
*
Dell
Inspiron 14, B980 + Intel HD@RM1199[2.1kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8
Inspiron 14, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1399[2.1kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

Lenovo
G480, B980 + Intel HD@RM1299, 2GB, 500GB, W8
G480, i3-2328M + Intel HD3000@RM1299, 2GB, 500GB (5400rpm), FreeDOS

To withstand the kind of "drop from table" impact, you need Lenovo Thinkpad / Dell Latitude / HP Elitebook kind of build quality (I can personally vouch for these since I dropped a Thinkpad from waist level to the floor before sweat.gif ) But they are expensive.

Alternative is go for "complete coverage" warranty, which cover all type of accidental damages. But this type of policy is relative expensive (and kind of moronic to opt for this type of warranty for budget laptop tongue.gif )

So your best bet are:
Those rubber feet that you saw on those DIY hardware store (make sure you get those that prevent and not those that facilitate sliding), get one set and attach to the bottom of laptop.
Cooling pad. Some cooling pad had a bottom that prevent sliding, and a holding rack that hold laptop in place.

Hi all sifu,

Actually I'm in delima to choose between Y500 and Y580.

I'm gonna use the laptop primary for work assignments ie. 3Ds Max, heavy photoshop, sketchup, autocad n 3d rendering.

So, i want to ask which one is worth to buy. I know both of the model is awesome n both of the models are within my budget.

Thanks in advance.
*
As you said, either one is good for you smile.gif
Y580 run warmer though.

However, since the apps you listed can't utilise SLI, then at stock configuration, Y580 with GT660M actually slightly outperform Y500 with single GT650M tongue.gif

Both should give you satisfaction spec wise. Then why not go out and look at the real thing, and let external appearance determine your choice laugh.gif

What is "super general usage"? tongue.gif
You can get International Warranty from all brands, it is just that you have to go through the hassle and pay more smile.gif
The easier one:
(suggest ultrabook, please let us know if you prefer something heavier and with more raw power)

Asus
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD (2 year International warranty)

Dell
Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1799[1.87kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, *no VGA port, OD
Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.87kg], 4GB, W7HB/W8, *no VGA port, OD
Inspiron 14z, i5-3317U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB SSD + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2449[1.87kg], 4GB, W8 *no VGA port, OD
Inspiron 14-3421, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1799[1.99kg], Win8SL, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell
Inspiron 14R, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT640M LE@RM2099[1.97kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8SL

LOL, super general means things like campus work, browsing the web, playing videos, watching movies and all. Not even into heavy photo-editing or hardcore gaming.

Something with bigger storage will do tho, not really need SSD for now.
*
Then the earlier suggestions suit you well, since they are light and easy for you to carry around, and powerful enough to satisfy your usage requirement.

As for HDD storage, you can easily arrange upgrade with re-seller (or select another option if buy through Dell Online). 1TB HDD is < RM100 more expensive than 500G HDD now.
The small mSATA SSD in some of the models are for caching (factory setting), not available for your saving data.

I'm interested to get the new dell inspiron 15.

http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/con...s=dhs&cs=mydhs1

windows 8 not included...hence the low price. I wonder does it comes with driver disc? will the drivers support Win7? I can install Win7 myself. I don't want Win8.
*
No, it does not come with driver disc.
But you could find all the W7 or W8 drivers you need online:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/my/en/...nspiron-15-3521

Dell has quite extensive online tools. If you are a owner of Dell laptop, you can just online chat in the support page, and the technician could direct you to the right place.

I'm not sure about the one with FreeDOS..
But its 2 years regional (ASEAN + China) warranty for the other one  nod.gif
*
The FreeDOS spec only has 1 year warranty.
In fact, currently, all the Lenovo G series only has 1 year warranty, only the G480 i5/W8 has 2 years.
