Hi dimenxion,

May I know what is your current firmware version? The latest one is 3.0.0.4.374.979.

http://www.asus.com/my/Networking/RTN56U/#support

And if it is latest version already, can you send me your setting and log file of the router?

I will PM you my e-mail.

Thank you
*
Hi both, I am having the same issue with my RT-N56U too. I am on Time Home Fibre and I have a DynDNS hostname tied to my dynamic IP. I can access my Download Master web app from outside my home network, but connecting to the VPN server has never been successful. I have tried to initiate a PPTP connection from my Win7 laptop, my iOS7 tablet and even my 4.4.2 Android phone - no joy.

However, previously I was on another firmware version, a newer version which was taken offline by Asus recently. When that firmware was active, my VPN server was ok.

Current firmware (problem with VPN server feature) = 3.0.0.4.374.979
Previous latest firmware (VPN server feature OK) = 3.0.0.4.374.2078 (no longer on Asus Support website)

kmrdeva & dimenxion , may i know where are you guys dialing from?
Home VPN : Unifi / streamyx
Mobile : Maxis 3G , this will not work on PPTP. Have to use OpenVPN
*
Home VPN : Time Fibre Home
Mobile : Maxis 3G, Streamyx, Digi 3G

The thing is, on the latest greatest firmware version which was taken offline by Asus, the VPN server functioned fine.

Hi kmrdeva,

Can you send me your setting file of the router? I will PM you my e-mail address.

Thank you

Oh, just replied your PM without seeing your request above. I can only send you my settings file tonight once I get home.

If you want, I can pass u a public dropbox link to the latest firmware FW_RT_N56U_30043742078.zip that is no longer available on Asus support web page. I managed to download and use it some weeks back.

turns out the port forwarding config is wrong. where it forwards all ports to one destination which includes the 1723. i removed it and all good
*
Hmm, I don't have port forwarding enabled on my RT-N56U. Another issue at my end, I think.

try to scan 1723 port from online. if your port 1723 did not have any issue, 1723 should be open. if it says not responding, possible config issue. did you do any DMZ?
*
Yes buddy, I do have DMZ enabled with my home PC's LAN IP address in it.

if you try port scan from outside to inside your LAN and 1723 not open, try to remove the DMZ first bro and see what happened.
*
Have disabled DMZ, VPN server on the RT-N56U is now accessible from outside via Maxis 3G. Have not tested internet and home network access via VPN yet, a bit busy with work.

nice bro.. finally we made it to work  biggrin.gif and i can confirm maxis can connect to pptp vpn
*
Yes, finally vpn server works. So dmz needs to be disabled for vpn server to work. I made 2 more changes though.

1. The vpn client ip pool 193.168.1.91-100, changed to same subnet as my home network 192.168.1.10-90

2. DNS server settings for vpn clients were manually configured to my UnoTelly DNS servers (paid service).

Problem : I set the wireless to N mode.

my client is capable of N. but when I check the connection speed, I am getting only 65 MBPS. on my Himedia Q5ii, I am getting 75 Mbps.

why am I not getting 300 Mbps ?
*
Both your 'client' and 'himedia' have N-300 wifi capability? From what I remember, a basic N-spec connection is usually 60-80 Mbps.

1- ddns i registerd with myname.asuscomm.com

- i can ping that adress with the dynamic IP, or the adress asuscomm (so registered ok)
- when i was at home testing, i can go to the router using ddns
- but when i try to go in the router from office, while still manged to ping the ddns, but cant connect to it.

- try to connect from office to my home vpn also cant.

please advice whats the solution.

I remember having the same issues like you, previously, on my RT-N56U. Someone, I forget who, asked me to try disabling DMZ on my router. And after that my issues were fixed. You may want to try it.

I don't understand why Asus RT-N56U has so much problems with wireless, some of my devices can't detect it at all, and now my new laptop also suffers the same problem, even cheapo TM router can get the job done but somehow n56u can't?

Latest firmware can't help either, please anyone help me to solve this annoying problem. Thanks.
*
Maybe you have a dud unit, buddy? I have been using an RT-N56U for almost 6 months now with zero issues - I have 2 laptops, 1 PC, an iPad3, an S2, a Note3 and 2 NAS boxes connected in my LAN, most of them over wireless with a few via Powerline Ethernet. You have tried factory reset and re-setup?

Guys and gals, I have a question. I was helping a friend of mine who had an RT-N66U at his home connected to his 8MB Streamyx line via a TM-provided dLink modem. He had been having trouble accessing web sites ever since he had his router installed. Last night, after updating the router's firmware (didn't help) and mucking about the settings of the router, I finally found that setting the MTU and MRU to 1480 (instead of 1492) under WAN section fixed his Internet access issues.

So now I am wondering if I should do the same on my RT-N56U connected to a 15MB Time Fibre link?

Hi kmrdeva,

The default value should be 1492 when you select PPPoE. Have you tried factory reset and redo the Internet connection after the firmware update?
*
Yes, based on my experience 1492 is optimal for PPPoE. I had factory resetted his RT-N66U and also flashed up to latest firmware, but these didn't help until I brought down the MTU and MRU to 1480.

Perhaps I will drop by my friend's place to test some more, using the info in this article - http://goo.gl/0uURiN.

I was skeptical, after he plugged in TM Router and did speedtest both upload and download was at 90% capacity, and just to check immediately we unplugged the TM router and used my Asus and almost immediately the speed of upload dropped, and download became intermitten. Anyone have any idea on this? If I might have to buy a tm router and use my really expensive Asus as a repeater. HELP!

BTW... already updated the latest firmware.
*
I have a friend on Streamyx 8MB link with similar issues with upload speed when using his RT-N66U router. After testing a bit and playing around with the MTU and MRU settings on his router, his connection is ok now.

Used info from this article when I helped him troubleshoot - http://goo.gl/DHNahz. BTW, the most optimal setting for him was 1452 (1453 and above causes error) so I had set 1480 (i.e. 1452+28 as per article) and he's a happy camper now.

For my home Time Fibre connection, the same value worked best too. Not sure if this is related to your issue, but may not hurt to try, eh?

Thanks for the help... i'll try tonight, but at the same time I would like someone from Asus to reply to see if they are aware of this issue as I seem not the be the only one.
*
OK sure. If it's any consolation, I have 2 other friends using Asus routers. All having no speed issues other than the usual complaint of internet speed not being enough wink.gif

1. Asus RT-AC66U with Unifi 10mb = no problems
2. Asus RT-N66U with Streamyx 8mb = no problems
3. Asus RT-N56U with Time Fibre 15mb = no problems

Perhaps there is a modem vs router compatibility at play or some settings issue, here..

Between RT-AC66U and RT-N66U, which is a better buy? Does AC66 have similar performance with N66U but with added wireless AC capability only? How about stability comparison?

Was using Cisco E2500 but kena lightning so now back to TM Dlink unit again. Doing homework for a TM Dlink replacement.

TIA..
*
I think the price difference between AC66U and N66U is small enough that going for the AC model is probably my best suggestion. Personally, I am more interested in the dual core, dual band AC68U model biggrin.gif

Lol. I use 20mhz only frequency, channel 8, N only mode. Since my neighbour use 40mhz channel 11, so I don't want any interference.
*
If I remember correctly, in 2.4ghz spectrum both channels 8 and 11 do have overlap. Only channels 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap.

I have a buddy living in a 3+ floor home. '+' meaning he has an open area to hang clothes and also to sit and lounge around at night, on the roof top.

He has an AC68U on the ground floor with his older N66U on the 2nd floor acting as an AP (connected via ethernet cable to the AC68U). Coverage is good everywhere in his home. 1 SSID each per router with an additional guest SSID on the AC68U.

Thanks for the information buddy.

However. Did your friend said if the ac68u  can cover the entire house without any additional access point.

If not then I have to follow your friends setup
*
I remember he mentioned with just the AC68U, the signal was very poor on the 2nd floor and totally unavailable on the rooftop floor.

BTW, my friend did not use a powerline connection between the AC68U and N66U because he already had gigabit wired networking set up in his home during renovation.
