Hi. I am Maxis Home Fibre user and would like to add router or extender to increase the range of signal. Is RT-N12HP a right choice as extender with Thomson Router. Thank you

Yes.
Unlike DD-WRT/OpenWRT/Tomato, Merlin is based on ASUS official firmware.
There are no differences except for the extra tweaks & bug fixes.

Thanks for your fruitful information, i going to purchase later

may i know which firmware is better DD-WRT/OpenWRT/Tomato, Merlin ?

Hi bambazoon,

May I ask, is the VID in LAN port 4 also changed to the VID in LAN port 3 at the IPTV section?

Thank you
*
The VID for LAN port 4 has been removed and is left blank.

ASUSmy, I am not able to activate router RT-87AC for AC mode 5GHz, please advise how to setup for with correct basic settings. smile.gif

I recently purchased a TP-Link T4U USB adapter (867Mbps AC + 300Mbps N) and it works fine but only max out at 300 Mbps in N mode at channel 1+5, never functioning at AC mode at 5GHz with router 87AC. The testing was made with the router sit next to T4U adapter for easy communication.

Can router 87AC function with 5GHz in N mode, didn't function 5GHz N mode? Can router function at the same time with 2.4GHz N mode?

Purpose to buy this thrusted expensive 87AC router is for its strong high speeds wifi signals (1200+600+600Mbps). Appreciating your help. Thanks.

Hi lau6311,

Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz are running together for dual-band router. You can differentiate them easily by using different SSID name. RT-AC87U is a dual band router with the max speed of 600 Mbps for 2.4GHz and 1734 Mbps for 5GHz.

And by setting the channel bandwidth to 80MHz when connecting to the 5GHz, you sould be able to see the full speed.

Thank you

Hi Asusmy, your message is very clear and helpful, much appreciated.

Earlier, I did set 2.4GHz and 5GHz with different SSIDs. By reading from some useful forums before hand, I learned to set 5GHz for bandwidth 80MHz and 2.4GHz for 40MHz in order to potentially benefitting with the full speed of both bands provided by the router. In the 87AC wireless manual: "Hide SSID" is highlighed for "NO" for both 2.4 & 5GHz.

However, I could not detect or see the 5GHz activities. I explain:
I am using wifi tool such as the "Acrylic" to detect/see the wifi activities. I could see 87AC selected a SINGLE channel 6 in 2.4GHz with strong signals, but could NOT see similar but "empty" 5GHz activities (means no highlighted channel & selected frequency band) when clicking the 5GHz graph. Was it that I interpreted incorrectly.

Please help: I would want to utilize high speed 5GHz wifi for movies/music streaming, etc.. I believe Asus 87AC is a wonderful tool that can accomplish a challenging job. I admit that I am NEW in the IT world and much to learn.

Notes:
1. When choosing 2.4 GHz for 20 or 20/40 MHz band width, "Acrylic" detected max speed is 217.6 Mbps; changed to 40 MHz, it showed uprating to 450Mbps (double up, I guess it became instant bi-directional data flow). Question: Why it was NOT showing max 600 Mbps design speed? How do I get design 600 Mbps at 2.4GHz (I mean showing the product max speed, practical speed is expected to be lower)? I can see other detected routers showing 300 and 54 Mbps, a consistent sign.

2. I would talk to TP-Link for setup procedure for T4U USB AC (867+300) adapter. The setup is too "automatic" choosing channel 1+5 and tested speed is 145 Mbps N mode at 6m away, without a chance to chose channel and 2.4/5GHz bands. I am hoping Asus can lead the way. High end router is a complex but a wonderful gadget, and Asus 87AC deserves the praise and I need to show its strength.

3. For QoS setting, I like to activate adaptive QoS and to 'Enable Smart QoS' to be "ON". Please advise what upload & download bandwidth I should use? I am having maxis fibre 20 Mbps and always detecting very close to 20 Mbps. Or showing me the right way od doing.

Many thanks again to you--- ASUSmy.....

Hi lau6311,

You unable to detect the 5GHz band activities because you not connecting to it? You can connect one band at a time using the wifi adapter.

May I ask, are you able to scan the 5GHz SSID from your PC or phone?

As for your 2.4GHz, the MAX you can get is actually 300Mbps based the spec i found on the website. That's why you cannot get 600Mbps.

http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details...Archer+T4U#spec

The upload and download bandwidth are based on your Internet package, if your package is 20MB download and 20MB upload, just put the same in the QoS setting.

Thank you

Hi ASUSmy

You are right, cheers. My TP T4U 2.4GHz N mode is designed for max at 300 Mbps.

My issue is NOT able to utilize 87AC router for high design speed 1734 Mbps AC mode, & 867 Mbps AC mode that the T4U can try to get.... (Half of 867 Mbps is happiness)

On another matter: Actually, I am referring to 87AC router N mode that says "It supports three spatial streams on the 2.4GHz frequency band and delivers a maximum physical link rate of 600Mbps". Because the wifi analyzer should detect the router activated design max speed at N mode (since no AC mode was detected), but 87 router is showing either 217.6 Mbps (20 MHz) or 450 Mbps (40 MHz). I am expecting to see 600 Mbps detection by "acrylic" wifi analyzer for the router.

I will set upload/download speeds at 20 Mbps for "enable smart Qos".

I tend to agree with you: Was my T4U adapter NOT SET to connected with 87AC? The question is: First, I need to get 87AC to be SET for 5GHz broadcast, but please HOW, am I missing somethings? I will re-check T4U setup tonite and ensure T4U adapter can definately detect/function with 87AC router at 5GHz AC band width!

Sony T2/Z1 NOT detecting 5GHz & PC, notebook & PS4 Not detecting 5GHz, both N mode. T4U Not detect 5GHz both N/AC modes (but this time will re-do setup tonite for miracle).

I am appreciating your prompt response with kindness now and then. smile.gif

Yes, I tried with no success to connect AC mode 5GHz (preferrably T4U AC mode 867 Mbps than N mode 300 Mbps.)

Then, I subserquently tried 2.4 GHz at N mode showing a practical speed was 145 Mbps (T4U design for 300 Mbps.)

AC mode high speed 1734Mbps of 87AC router is the choice, as possible. Thanks.

Note: I am planning to upload a few hundreds musical hifi CDs at highest wifi speed to WD EX2 cloud device. It would be hundreds of painful hours to accomplish the job. Time is the essence. Thanks again for your good help. smile.gif

Hi ASUSmy, I will organize to provide the required data to you soon, so as to make it productive. Please advise the locations of the log file & setting file for my retrieval; believe that the "print screen & paste" should do the job of capturing (MS-Words), and send log/setting files to you by email. Am I right? (Sorry that I am not familiar.)

Expressing appreciation of your support. (These few days, I am experiencing frequent internet dropouts and had called Maxis, who claimed it is nation wide situation now.) Thanks.

Dear ASUSmy,

I just bought a rt-ac66u. I tried to change the control channel for 5ghz network to other value other than 36, the configuration screen shows that it has been changed, but if i use wifi analyzer to check, it still running on channel 36. Is this normal?

Hope u could help me with this.

thanks.

Hi ASUSmy

Please advise HOW to CLOSE off 2.4GHz (N mode) broadcast of 87AC router, so I can try to activate only 5GHz AC mode connection. If the router & USB adapter are in good working order and setup properly, with router/adapter sitting next to each other, These devices should work and I can check max practical/design 5GHz AC mode speeds. smile.gif
