This is a Very Powerful Router but it would be superb if seller can guide the buyer/user to make full use of it.

I suggest seller to setup a Mikrotik 123 user thread to entice mid range Router buyers to make this router more user friendly.

I am actually looking for this kind of router and have been looking around at a few brands to date.

The wireless coverage is greatly determined by a lot of environmental factors, no one can guarantee the coverage, but I can say this model is quite good on that. However, the best thing about MikroTik is its features, performance and stability. biggrin.gif

Hi Cloudcomputer,

I've been following development of Mikrotik and hoping to get a unit soon to replace my existing Dlink. There's only 1 concern and I wonder if you could answer it for me.
We are using Unifi Biz20 with 5 public IP for 2 years, and as you might gussed the throughput on Dlink615 is very bad. TPLink with DDWRT or OpenWRT doesn't have an answer to my concern, writing to Mikrotik Malaysia also not giving me solid answer.

If you know what I'm talking about, yeah.. the Dlink is irreplaceable due to their firmware which allow bridging from WAN to LAN hence allowing 5 public IP addresses assigned on the LAN port (instead of NAT/PAT). So I wonder if you could tell me Mikrotik RouterOS can do the same as Dlink?

Thanks.
*
Hi sub7,

MikroTik doesn't has a branch in Malaysia, but a few distributors, I think you talked to a distributor instead of MikroTik.

MikroTik can supports virtually unlimited number of static IP addresses, you can do it either based on load balancing or policy based routing. Our paid service can provide the setup to our customers.

Even you don't need multiple outgoing IP, you can make your network access to Internet always on the same IP while public network still can access all of your IPs.

Thanks Cloud computer,
There is an overhead with NATing (which I dislike) suggested. The NATing at layer 3 consume memory and processing power (especially when number of IP sessions exceed few hundreds thousand). Both URLs is suggesting NATing while what I am looking for is layer 2 bridging capability. No filtering, no NATing, no ACL is required, no routing... just bridge the WAN interface through.

Eg:
Network/subnet id: 212.212.212.0/29
ISP Gateway: 212.212.212.1/29
Router WAN: 212.212.212.2/29
Router LAN (or host ip): 212.212.212.3, .4, .5 and .6  #WAN and LAN is bridged
Broadcast: 212.212.212.7

Any clue? I don't need IP feature set (firewall/PBR/LB) but just dedicated WAN bridging feature. Funny though, Dlink615 can do that...

Cheers and thanks for your input.

Your setup is even simpler, the references are just some ideas for you on what MikroTik can do, you can just create default gateway in routing table to route mangled traffic from preferred source IP

hi, just some questions, this router, compare to those like Asus RT-AC66U Broadcom based, which 1 will be more powerful in throughput, in terms like Wifi, since this 1 only got 2 antennas...

aside from this, does the routerOS easy to configure? and has additional features like Multiple VPN servers (a few openvpn, a few pptp)daemon at the same time, multiple DDNS support, and so on....

thanks for your kind reply. primarily used for unifi
*
Hi Bro/Sis,

The wireless performance is greatly depends on a lot of factors on both environment and client sides, the wireless throughput can be highly affected by the setup too, for example MikroTik has proprietary wireless protocols, which is better than 802.11, like Nv2 and Nstreme to enhance the throughput but it is only supported among MikroTik devices.

RouterOS configuration in GUI is not as easy as consumer brands like Asus but it's much better than high end brands like Cisco. As you know that MikroTik has many high end networking features, normal users that don't understand will find it difficult to configure, the good news is MikroTik has very big community and you can find a lot of guides and resources on Internet.

You can have different types of VPN server at the same time but not the same type other than PPPoE server, is there any reason you need multiple PPTP server at the same time? Maybe it can be done with some other setup. Yes you can have virtually unlimited number of DDNS clients by using scripting.

^- hi thanks for the reply, i asking because in tomato, you can setup 2x openvpn servers...

this is due to, i will use one of them as a tunnel with all friends and we can browse each other shared media... and act as LAN. (this 1 is to only tunnel LAN but not internet)

the other server i made it into a internet vpn, using port 443 try to bypass places where i usual;ly get filtered and so on... this 1 will tunnel everything....

so thats y i will need 2 of them, or is there any solution? not sure if the ovpn client config can choose... haha

thanks for the answer anyway
*
Hi, you can assign different ip range to different VPN account, then filter or mangle based on ip ranges to archive what you intend to do. biggrin.gif

The latest major version of RouterOS, RouterOS 6.0 is out of beta and officially released now!

QUOTE
MikroTik RouterOS Version 6 Changes
Here is a list of some changes and improvements for RouterOS v6

• A new linux kernel is used (version 3.3.5) which enables us to use the latest drivers and support most of the latest hardware
• Simple queue mechanism is improved to greatly benefit setups with hundreds or thousands of Simple queue rules
• Simple queue performance on multicore systems is improved significantly
• Latest v6rc3 adds more Simple queue optimizations, Packet flow is slightly changed as you can see in the diagram below
• v6 also features fastpath feature - a mechanism of packet flow shortcuts to massively improve data throughput, currently this feature is added to simple setups, like routing, bridging and mpls, but in future we plan to enable fast path for more complex features, such as Firewall
• Fastpath is also supported for MPLS traffic since RouterOS v6rc3
• RouterOS is now made 64bit for TILE architecture, that is used on our new Cloud Core Router devices (see article on page 1), giving ability to use 16GB of RAM or more

Hidden Feature - Cable Diagnostics

The ability to detect cable problems has now been added in RouterOS v6rc3 and newer releases.
RouterOS will tell you:

    • Which cable pair is broken
    • At what length the cable is broken
    • How the cable is broken - torn or shorted

This works on SXT-G, RB711G, RB2011, RB750 series and other devices with the same switch chips, and also the new Cloud Core series devices.
