Shanghai is an expensive city and Shanghai girls are notoriously b*tchy and high maintenance.

There is money to be made in China right now, seeing as how they're economy is flying - how long it is sustainable is questionable though. A few engineers I know have been offered 2x or 3x their current Malaysian salary - but compared to engineers from China/HK/Taiwan we are still the cheapest even after the increase.

china is now a new market for employees... especially when they need people who can speak both english and mandrin... it's a good try though...

for a girl, go to shanghai! their fashion trend is far better than malaysia!!

Better research properly on the cost of living. A colleague of mine went there and almost didn't make it eventhough they pay more because if they know you're foreigner, they charge very expensive for getting a place to stay. It is more expensive than KL.

My colleague said eventho you may know to speak and write Malaysian version of Mandarin/Chinese, in Shanghai, their Mandarin is heavily accent'ed and can barely understand them. It may take one a while to get adjusted. And, of course, the pollution is worse than KL.

Shanghai standard of living is almost the same as in Singapore. So really have to be careful in your calculations, esp on the housing and travel allowances. In Shanghai, they typically speak in the dialect rather than Mandarin, so takes some getting used to.

Another thing is that when looking at the job prospects, you have to consider what will happen after your contract (if it is a contract). Do not take it for granted that the company that post you there will be also arranging for a job for you back here.

more than 1 yr in research field, and the job offered is quite a different frm my present post. 1 thing i shall slarify is, i'll be relocated in Kunshan, and not Shanghai. Kindhan is a developing province just around 50km frm shanghai. it's mainly a plastic injection comp, and they hav other business too. the pay is slightly higher than local pay, i shall say around 4k, which they take me as freshie in engineering. they have their own hostel, and they provide daily meal too.

Sharing from my friends who went to China (Shenzen) to work:

(1) People are generally rude (my friend could not borrow can opener from neigbour, slams door)
(2) Not so hygiene (spit almost everywhere)
(3) Very competetive working environment

My friend planned to work there on short term basis.

Hope it helps.
