Compare to IOS and Android, Windows Phone 8 apps very less only. Current official figure is 160000+ apps.
Microsoft and some third party developer is trying hard to make their apps store complete, Microsoft even pay developer money if they willing to port their apps to Windows Phone 8. But some developer not willing to develop apps for windows phone as currently smartphone's OS market share still very low (less than 10%) compare Android and IOS, and smartphone user un-willing to jump ship to WP8 as is was less apps (Chicken and Egg problem).
Besides that, Nokia as the official partner for Microsoft's WP8, it had also developed some apps (camera apps and HERE maps, Ringtone Maker for example) to fill up the gap.
Currently all the social apps is almost complete (offcial + un-official), but some is still very buggy though (whatapps for example).
Facebook - Facebooks apps developed by Microsoft
Whatapps - official
Wechat - official
Line - Official
Viber - Official
Kakao Talk - official
Instagram - Instance (unofficial)
Youtube - Metrotube (unofficial), there was once one apps developed by microsoft that free of ads and can download and watch offline, but google butthurt and ask microsoft to remove it, currently become a bookmark link to open IE10 only.
Snapchat - Swapchat (unofficial)
Twitter - Official
Skype - Official
Linkedin - Official
Pandora - Official
Shazam - official
Sportify - official
Waze - Official (In closed beta testing currently)
PDF Reader - Adobe Reader (official)
Cloud storage - Skydrive (7GB for WP8 user)
Office - Microsoft Office 15
You can search other apps you want here:

As Google and Microsoft had bad blood currently, Google didn't develop any apps for WP8, except only one google search apps. So no youtube, google maps and other web service provided by Google.
Advantage? I not sure, as i haven't use other smartphone before, i only play a little while of Iphone and Android from my family, so can't give much comparison.
As far as i know:
-WP8 use different UI (Metro UI) compare to IOS and Android. It had live tiles.
-WP8 had GPS maps and navigation (HERE maps, HERE drive), that allow to work in offline.
-WP8 won't become lagdroid like those manufacturer customized Android OS on their phone. Same like IOS
-WP8 had closed OS environment like IOS. And all the apps need to submit to microsoft to be checked before can publish at their apps store. So had more security compare to Android.
-WP8 support NFC and bluetooth like Android.
-WP8 use same core kernel with desktop's Windows 8, so developer can easily port Windows 8 apps to WP8.
So in short, WP8 is somewhere between IOS and Android, Closed OS environment but support various file transfer (NFC, Bluetooth, USB File Transfer from PC).
Also if choose Nokia, prepared to be amaze by its photo shoot capability, especially night shot.
