We adopted a mixed breed puppy at 6 weeks old. He was due for his vaccination on the 8th week. However, last 2 days of the 8th week, he had gradually stopped eating and was very weak. He had white gums and a bloated stomach. No diarrhea or vomiting. He only drank water.
It was easy to make an appointment.
I informed Dr See of the symptoms. He could not advise on what was wrong. Told us that the white gums was due to anemia.
He did a fecal exam. Turns out there were Round worm eggs in the faeces. But no, that was not the cause for anemia.
In order to check for the underlying cause, we were advised to do a number of test.
I requested for a breakdown.
Consultation RM40
Fecal Exam RM10
SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test) Test RM90
PBF (Peripheral Blood Film) Test RM20
Ultrasound RM100
F & A Test (fine needle aspiration cytology) RM20
CBC (complete blood count) Test RM40
Total RM320 + 6%GST RM19.20
= RM339.20
The blood test revealed that there was a parasite in his blood cells. So our puppy had Tick Fever (it's like dengue). The rest of the test were negative.
(http://www.eastislandvets.com.hk/en/pet-emergencies/Tick-Fever)
Dr See advised that even with an injection to get rid of the parasite, our puppy will have to go on drips and stay there till he gets a blood transfusion.
RM1000++ for in-house drips
RM200++ injection for parasite
RM400++ blood transfusion per visit
Blood transfusion will need some time in order to check for availability.
We were told that the chances of survival is below 50% and our puppy might need more than 1 blood transfusion.
We were also advised to do another test in order to check the kidney and liver function. It was estimated at RM100-RM200.
We declined it as we did not see it as necessary after discovering the results of the blood test.
So that's our experience.
