The CC-airline miles game in Malaysia is pretty much gone at the moment. Not sure why the banks decided to go this way.

It's still a big game in many other countries, including the red dot down south.

Agree with that. I’m able to use my Amex PPS KFlyer card to generate KF points, and at the same time, my Maybank Diamante Visa Infinite card collects Treat Points which can be used to convert to KF points as well.

I add around 50% of my points via credit card spending annually, and the other 50% is from flying with SQ via premium class purchases.

Due to Ringgit depreciation? Miles are traded internationally so most likely bank cost is in USD. Their miles cost has probably gone up a lot on Ringgit basis.

Ah. That's a good point! You might have hit the nail on the head!

The Maybank devaluation is 5000 to 10000 and for the amex reserve, 5 to 2 points. That's a 500% devaluation, or a 1/5 new value (RM=1 mile to RM5=1mile).

That's not by any stretch of imagination, inflation based valuation.

Wow. That’s not a paper cut… it’s a massacre!

The original 1 RM = 1 mile was always unsustainable. I think at one point it was probably the best earn rate in the world.
(not complaining as I racked up substantial miles including multiple SQ First/Business redemption based on old rate)

Now they move to the other end of spectrum completely and become one of the worst

I think the squeeze is happening on both ends.

On the accumulation side, the points per spend have been decreased significantly.

On the redemption side, the seats are being reduced in favour of full fee paying passengers. I’ve nearly given up trying to get redemption awards for upgrades (eg Business to Suites) for 2 persons as wife and I usually travel together, so we just end up buying the tickets outright instead.

Isn't upgrade generally poorer value than full.redemption?

Yes, but look at it this way:

1. I can’t afford to be put on waiting list. Time is money and I have to confirm my dates otherwise my patients will maki hamun flip table when they fly in from Indonesia or Vietnam only to find the practice closed and no cover because of some last minute shit.

2. So we usually book and pay to confirm our slot, and depending on what we are down to do over at the destination (eg just visiting home and Netflix and chill for a month vs I have patients to see in Sydney because my colleagues have gathered enough cases for me to consult) we would have decided on Business (for the former scenario) vs First or Suites (for the latter - hey, gotta pamper myself a bit).

3. If it’s the former (ie Business) then we try our luck to see if we can get an upgrade using our points.

We have a tonne of points and not many uses for them. There are only so many 30% discounted Apple iPhone or iPad models that I am willing to buy from Krisshop every year…
