did a dummy booking... kul to mel, automatically books me to D class @ 99,000 miles return. Tax RM 1123...

In contrast, using CX OWR KUL to HKG (stopover) to AKL cost 144,000 + RM 400 tax.. extra abit miles can visit two places and pay less tax per pax.

For OW redemption, first need to find available route on respective airline website. For eg, if you plan to take CX, then use asiamiles to search for KUL to HKG then HKG to AKL. Usually if award seats are available, you should be able to book it immediately on Asiamiles website. Take note of the flight number and time. If it shows waitlist, you'll usually not be able to get it on award redemption. The same applies if using other airlines within the alliance.

Once you have all the itinerary, then comes the headache step of calling MH center for the agent to piece together the itinerary. I was lucky to be able to work in my stop in HKG as a 2 day stopover (this booking was done last year) but believe the rules has been tighten slightly to only allow for 24 hour transit. Still it's a win to get to try CX Pier, Explore HK abit and have some wan tan mee.

You need to refer to MH One World Redemption chart. There's two diff rates. One is just flights purely on 1 partner airline (as in CX all the way to AKL). The rate is based on distance of the origin city to destination without taking into account the transit point of the partner airline (in this case, HKG). That's why my return trip cost 144k miles.

The other option is to use OWMCR which is using a mix of multiple OW carrier, eg. KUL - HKG - AKL (via CX) and AKL - SYD - KUL (via Qantas). For this, (correct me if i'm wrong) you need to calculate the total miles travelled to get the amount of miles required from the chart. On top of this, you'll have surcharges from airlines (YQ, Taxes etc).

obviously the transit has to be HKG, as CX is based in HKG.

you have to use Asia Miles website to search, enrich only show MH flights

SQ
KUL-MEL 58k + RM129
MEL-KUL 58k + AUD86

SQ is now so much more competitive compared to MH, even with the slighly higher miles requirement. cash outlay much much lower. Plus can add a stopover in Singapore smile.gif

I took a look at the pdf faq. Looks like another devaluation on award redemption especially OW redemption
