ati HD4350 and ati4850 this two, will it have any quality diffrent whent playing movies? i know games the fps will drop but what about fhd movies? tyty

Not much , I believe both can do 1080p/720p decoding , so shouldn't be a problem at all

To be honest , even an onboard nvidia geforce 8200 does movie decoding as well. Its not a big deal. If you have a Quad Core , I wouldnt' be worrying too much on the GPU side

Alright guys, I'm setting up a low end HTPC. It will be connected to a old CRT TV and LCD monitor at the moment, but will connect it to a 40/42" LCD TV in the near future.

Video : Connect using S-Video on graphics card to S-Video on CRT TV.

Sound : Twin phono (RCA) to 3.5mm stereo jack cable from Onboard sound to AV Receiver.

Athlon X2 5200+
Gigabyte M61PME-S2 ( micro ATX )
Onboard sound
Onboard LAN - will be wired to a router.
2GB Kingston PC-6400 DDR2-800
Seagate 320GB
LG dvd-rw
Graphics card ATI 4550
TV tuner card
- might add another HDD in the future.
Casing micro ATX with 3/4 fans.
PSU - Coolermaster extreme 390W

Some questions before I buy the parts.

1. Will a longer S-Video or twin phono to 3.5mm stereo jack or HDMI cable increase power consumption on the PSU? Significant power increase? What about quality?

2. Will a bigger LCD TV and Monitor increase power consumption on the PSU?

3. Is the PSU enough for this setup?

No problems. LCD TV ? The power consumption should be way lower then your CRT ! That's for sure

can normal 29" tube tv support htpc......what GC that the best ?
i think the connector should use component cable is it?

Added on April 5, 2009, 12:07 pmwhich one better s-video or component?

Yes , why not. There was a Malaysian who set it up with his CRT 29" + HTPC. A GeForce 4 MX (as long it can do MPEG2-hardware encoding) would do the trick. You don't need fancy graphics card unless you plan to play HD content or do some gaming

Hi, by using hauppauge win-TV 150 MCE kit, i presume I'll be able to:
1. stream astro through MCE
2. Control Astro using the IR blaster that is provided and the MCE remote?

What if I want to:
a. connect to 2 astro decoders so that another HTPC that is connected via CAT network can view one channel while the other HTPC view another channel?
b. use another front end e.g. frontrow or XBMC?

I'm looking to set all this up but am still quite lost at the endless possibilities and choices ...

appreciate your comments, guys

1) Not stream but you're able to play ASTRO with MCE. Its very nice , especially when you could pause "Live TV"

2) Yeah , it works fine. You can use the MCE Remote to change ASTRO channels. Pretty neat

a) Get a Dreambox or whatever they call it which has two tuners so that you can link it up one for one HTPC. The other option is to buy another WinTV 150 MCE kit and link it together

b) Sure it will work fine. Hauppauge WinTV MCE 150 has a hardware encoder , so its not a problem. Works with Linux, however FrontRow is for Mac only. So you can't use that !

guyss...

i need to build an htpc with limited budget...

My display will be an acer h233h.. thru hdmi.. i dont need tv tuners or recorders.
my htpc purpose (by priority):
1) Preview HD content (m2s / xvid / mp4 / mov h.264) which comes in 720p & 1080p edited in vegas by another pc.
2) Watch downloaded movies (mkv / divx /etc..)

questions:
1) i would like to know about the front end if i were to use with xp pro.
2) id rather use remotes compared to wireless keys.. any recommends?
3) I have an old p4 2.8 HT northwood + ic7 mobo (ancient) running 2x512 of ddr400s. could it be used as a barebone for the htpc i'm building?
4) XBMC looks nice.. isit suitable?
list me a spec please! tq!

1) you should get linux or better yet vista or windows 7 home premium with windows media center , I love

2) I am not sure there are few Windows media center compatible remotes that you can buy from LYN garage sales. I've seen few sellers

3) Yes , get a GF8400 AGP graphics or ati 3 series which is able to do HD decoding via the GPU itself

4) I prefer Windows Media Centre over XBMC !

Anyway I have HTPC as well , check out my specs (the one that uses Pentium Dual Core). It has a TV Tuner , Crapative Crap X-Fi XtremeMusic and GF8400GS/8500GT (low profile) . Basically it records astro shows , plays HD Content and umm well watch shows from US and UK such as from BBC , iTV , hulu , CBS on my HDTV. All in one tongue.gif
