a noob question here....

everyone know that for sure must have a good PCI or PCI-e Add-On Sound Card to produce better sound output when we connect via analog out.
Sound Card act to decode the digital to analog, play a very important role on HTPC.

How bout if we plan to connect via SPDIF or HDMI, which is the pure direct digital raw output to our AVR.
to be more technical term specify: I did compare regular good sound card did support 192KHz/24-bit audio digital output,
and compare to my build-in motherboard digital output audio support also same 192KHz/24-bit.

My question are: still make any different if we using digital out [compare build-in audio vs add-on. sound card???? (since there is no conversion needed)

any sifu or experienced formers kindly advise me if already audience with finding....thx

I'm not a sound guru , your Bulit-in Audio card is capable of outputting HD Audio out without any problems. The problem is the sound isn't clear and sharp as a dedicated PCI or PCIe Sound card (i.e a Creative SoundBlaster Xi-fi or those high-end Creative SoundBlaster cards). A dedicated sound card is still a dedicated sound card. Your On board Audio uses your CPU to decode the audio and for some processing needs. Thats about it.

You can get a video card which has HDMI and that has a connector to connect it to your motherboard. So that you can use 1 cable which carries digital sound and digital video together. This should be your ideal setup !

thanks prasys ~~! smile.gif
for analog I know that sound card need to decode and build in sound are using cpu to decode as you mentioned.

Can we also confirm Digital Out still need to decode? since our source in digital form and output also digital form ????

Similar to my previous quest...

Now I play my FLACs with Foobar2k, with settings as explained in the link below. It uses 'WASAPI' (...or something like that) which is supposed to bypass all processing by Windows/player, and send out pure/raw digital signal out to the assigned digital output. Result is superb!! And I'm only using onboard/MoBo sound chipsets - no need to use specialised add-on soundcard!
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/800211

If you know or find out later how to do the 'bypass' settings in Windows Media Player, pls do PM me. I prefer to use single player (namely WMP) but I don't know yet how to do the bypass, thus it sounds awful - so have to use Foobar2k for now.

thanks bro~ thanks for sharing..
since certain AVR can do better decoding than certain pc sound card. why we still getting duplicate functionality.
meant I don't really need to buy a decent additional sound card.

BTW, can you share more with me about Foobar2k ? never use before tongue.gif where to download? (will study your thread in http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/800211)

what's I try before is my previous old creative sound card have a function:
(a) use internal decoder
(b) bypass and use external decoder

but those function not found in my build in audio shakehead.gif

AstroCreep:

I found out something. which is using 1 of my favorite player: Media Player Classic
Our Objective: Bypass the processing and direct to raw out

May I know you try before or dunno my idea correct or not?
can you do 1 favor? using that player then go to: view->option->Playback->Output:
[attachmentid=617435]

for my motherboard is SoundMax, so will select directsound: SPDIF out.
try to check yours and compare the sound output.

cant wait your finding~

You can use program "AC3Filter" which passthrough the sound via SPDIF. Its working for WMP including Media Center. Havent try for HDMI connection, but I doubt it, as didnt found any option.

Before, my source is in FLAC, but now converted to WMA due to FLAC have a IDtag and album art compatibility with WMP (even with WMPTSE plugin). But with WMA, I cannot get the 5 channel signal to be played properly. Anybody get to play DTS song contained in WMA?

Hi everyone,

Am really new at HTPC, so need a few quick answers. Planning to built mine this weekend.

1) How do I hook up the soundcard for 5.1 Dolby. I hv an AV receiver that allows input of 5 outlets tat looks like RCA. But soundcard all comes with only a Stereo Headphones output.

2) Graphic Card - is there a HDMI to HDMI output to the TV or must i get a Digital to HDMI cable for this?

Any recommendation for the sound cards, graphic card etc or the whole built? Thanks.

if ur AVR have HDMI connection, will suggest you this idea for your both questions:
Get a graphics card which is come with HDMI or DVI-HDMI convertor or motherboard video build in come with HDMI.
You get Digital Sound out and video both at the same time. better than analog 5.1

Question here: Will after the DVI-HDMI convertor carry the audio signal via HDMI cable too?

Yes, DVI-HDMI convertor carry the audio signal via HDMI cable too.
some of the video card come with DVI-HDMI converter will also provided SPDIF cable for you.
the SPDIF is to connect your onboard audio or sound card SPDIF to your video card, so that the output carry both video and audio from your video card.

Thanks djlah. Slack part is my AVR doesn't have an HDMI input, so i guess i need to resort back to a Sound card that supports Coaxial or Optical for the 5.1 right?

yes, this is will the alternative. at least Coaxial or Optical are better sound output than analog if your AVR can decode better than pc.
