It's not a German company per se, since it was founded in the Far East (Shanghai or Japan, IIRC), but the founder was a German and something of a philantrophist (I think)
Basically it is one of those equipment vendor type of companies. I remember that they were badly stung by the currency crisis of 1997 and the Malaysia operations went through a lot of problems/politicking as a result. I think things have stabilized since then and they have restructured substantially.
I think they used to be the agent for (metrology prep equipment maker) Buehler and some semicon related equipment but I'm not so sure now. I think they still deal in Leica cameras and also medical equipment and consumables though.
