Proton Holdings Bhd will roll out models fitted with engines developed by Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) in the first quarter of next year.

Yesterday, the national carmaker paid RM63 million to buy all engine technologies and knowledge developed by Petronas since 1997, which will mark the latter’s complete exit from all engine development activities.

Proton signed an assets and technologies acquisition agreement with Petronas Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB), the technology commercialisation arm of Petronas at a ceremony held here.

The event was witnessed by the adviser to Petronas and Proton, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Through the deal, Proton will have immediate ownership of a more powerful yet fuelefficient family of naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.0 litre engines, as well as a 2.2 litre turbocharged version to complement its existing Campro engine line-up.

The agreement also gives Proton access to the spray-guided Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology, which was co-developed by Petronas Research Sdn Bhd with a renowned engineering firm.

“Proton Holdings, through Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd, is taking over seven engine technologies with 117 technology patents from Petronas,” Proton chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil said at the signing ceremony here yesterday.

Mohd Khamil said testing for the new engine, dubbed NE01, is ongoing in Proton’s Exora and Preve models.

He added that a diesel engine could be in the offering in the near future as well.

The PETRONAS E01 can be installed about 15 degrees tilting forward or backward within the engine compartment of the vehicle. This allows the engine to be fitted into any model of cars. Versatile! The picture above shows the Petronas E01 installed in a Proton Waja.

Aesthetics-wise, the engine really looks great. The DOHC cover is in black and green, and look at those polished stainless steel extractors! Yum! The engine is not only pretty to look at. Let’s have a look at it’s technical specifications.

Technical Specifications

Valve mechanism: Continuous Control VVT (Variable Valve Timing)
Camshaft: Double OverHead Camshaft (DOHC)
Displacement: 2 litres
Induction: Natural Aspirated
Cylinders: 4, In-line
Valves per cylinder: 4
Block: Aluminum
Weight: 108.9kg
Max Horsepower: 204.3 PS @ 7300rpm
Max Torque: 203Nm @ 5300rpm
Power Output per litre: 100 PS/litre
Volumetric Efficiency: 107.8%
Emission Standards: EURO 2

Original design targets for the engine was 200ps max power, 200Nm torque and 120kg weight. So basically PETRONAS engineers managed to exceed their original design targets.

As a benchmark, the Honda K20A makes 220PS but at a higher 8000rpm. Maximum torque is equivalent to the E01 at 200Nm, but maximum torque is only achievable at 7000rpm while the PETRONAS E01 gets max torque at a relatively low 5300rpm.

The idea of the production was first revealed by Proton Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin on 13 December 2008, due to the new market trend of having small displacement engine but forced-aspirated to produce the power output equivalent to a larger motor, a similar concept as the Volkswagen TSI twincharger technology and the Ford EcoBoost engine.[13] The finalised engine was first debuted during the KLIMS 2010.[14]

The engine is capable to produce 138 bhp (103 kW; 140 PS) at 5,000 rpm of power and 205 N·m (151 lb·ft) at 2,000-4,000 rpm of torque.[12] To accommodate the increase of engine power, several changes to the technical specification have been done.[14] While the engine bore remains at 76 mm (3.0 in), the stroke is shortened to 86 mm (3.4 in) compared with 88 mm (3.5 in) as in other 1.6L Campro engine variants, resulting the engine displacement of 1561 cc. The compression ratio is reduced to 8.9:1 from the previous 10:1. A variable valve timing mechanism is also added for the intake valves, but it alters the cam phasing and valve opening timing continuously rather than altering the valve lift at a preset engine speed as in the CPS mechanism.[15]

more importantly, the gearbox. Currently proton have CVT punch VT3. Much better if use dual clutch gb.

Looking at DRB hicom pace, seems like they were rushing out to get this engine on the road. The CFE takes year of testing.
Probably getrag manual or conventional AT from mitsu. And Mitsu AT sucks btw as found in old Proton.

Original design targets for the engine was 200ps max power, 200Nm torque and 120kg weight. So basically PETRONAS engineers managed to exceed their original design targets.

As a benchmark, the Honda K20A makes 220PS but at a higher 8000rpm. Maximum torque is equivalent to the E01 at 200Nm, but maximum torque is only achievable at 7000rpm while the PETRONAS E01 gets max torque at a relatively low 5300rpm.

like u drive more than 3000rpm doesnt ur car will drink alot of fuel.

Its cheaper to buy the tech from petronas. The engine has alot of untapped potential. 200hp from 2.0L is unheard of in N/A engine back in 2000.

Finally Proton swallow their pride and admit Petronas has better technological knowhow to produce a good engine

I hope you dont pair it to that shitty CVT. Manual FTW

Its not a fair comparison. The E01 is N/A while the Campro is turbocharged.

If you pair the E01 with a fast spooling small lightweight turbo, can smoke alot of high end cars too.

Nothing wrong with 10 yrs engine. It can be improved. No one complain Toyota use dated NZ engine as long as it is reliable.

Latest campro is not the same is the first campro. The campro iafm+ and CFE is comply with euro 5 rating. Even honda engine found in hybrid cars only met euro 3.

Some Asian market has their own emission standard such as China and India, but still mostly based on Euro, just less stringent.

Asean mostly follows Euro. Malaysia itself is Euro 2.

we may not get vtec engine, as my insider told me honda ask for platform exchange either exora or preve platform and proton ask for d segment car platform from honda

my bro in law working in petronas said;

CFE1.6 is mature product but not so powerful. NE01 more powerful but never mass produced before. All prototype. Mass production may have teething problem as I expect they will change some components to less exotic and expensive material for mass production.Fuel economy can be comparable.

Replace? CFE will probably have another 5 yrs life span. Campro will still be use, since Campro iafm and CFE already euro 5 rating.
