QUOTE(teckyang97 @ Jan 24 2013, 10:26 PM) Here's some clarification regarding bootloader, kernel and rom. Hope it sheds some light. Bootloader - the frontline code that get executed when you turn on any android device. It contains instructions to boot system kernel. Every bootloader is unique to every devices. Some may contain advanced options to mod or debug. It also serves as a checkpoint between partition, therefore that's why bootloaders are "locked" to restrict access to said partitions. Kernel - the middle man between software and hardware. For anything, ANYTHING that you want doing on Android ( or all other popular OS ), kernel is involved. It translate hardware input to software, and translating it back for results. Example : Waking screen. Hardware input : Power button pressed -> Kernel: Trigger OS -> OS: Power button pushed, turning on screen -> Kernel : Send trigger to display digitizer -> Hardware : Voila, screen wakes It effects all hardware aspects, brightness, digitizer, processor, memory, OTG controller etc. Hence why a well-written kernel can deliver high performance with minimal battery drain. ROM - Your device operating system. How your devices ultimately look and work depends on them. TabletUI, PhabletUI, bloatware, adblocking are all ROM controlled. ROM cooks ( aka ROM developers ) also optimizing their ROMs by determinating which app should sit in memory, deodex / odex apk, and clearing out bloatware from stock ROMs. Additional read : Bootloader Kernel Recovery Mode ROM This post has been edited by redlyfs: Jan 25 2013, 09:13 AM |

I disagree in Uncle Benny claim. Nexus 7 is not a Ferrari.
In fact its more like a Proton with Mercedes engine. Suspectable quality of door windows, doorlock is equivalent to the quality of speaker and screen of the Nexus 7. But now the thing is, if the car is designed with a top speed of 130km/h and anything above that is considered illegal; And at the same time im content at driving my car below the speed limit, why would i need to modify the engine to increase the top speed? Most of the road i drove in are narrow and crowded, which forbid me to basically drive more than 90km/h. (Most of the apps are not utilising the full capacity of the N7 as well) There are also the risk of being caught during a roadblock. (warranty claim Rooting is good, and its not tough. But its risky for the beginners and unnecessary for most of the users. I said most since none of my friends actually went into rooting their phone before. Perhaps im in small town maybe. |

TADA!, i have my highscore and powerups. ~add block: i dont think a single person here love to see adds. especially adds that are completely useless. click here to see sexy girls, seriously? ~rom toolbox: all in on root app, customize battery icon, boot animation, disable useless startup program, ~setCPU: i use this to underclock, less heat, and more battery, strange doesnt work on stock nexus7, but works on my phone. ~cwm backup: ultimate backup. tablet stolen/spoil/damage? no sweat, but a new tablet, and restore. ~cerberus anti theft: works even better with root access, will survive a full system wipe. sure all this is not necessary, but good to have. |

Everybody have their on preferences on whether they want to root or not. If interested to do it, it's a fulfilling geeky experience. If don't want, you're welcomed to enjoy it at stock.
But please don't personify it as a "Proton" tablet. It's much more than that. |

QUOTE(mtxx @ Jan 25 2013, 11:42 AM) rooting is not necessary. For all the reasons above and also a few i've read and seen in the past month, which is of use to me. Ihave lonh decided to root my Nexus 7 again, after my final exam. but since you are in this forum and looking at this thread, you must be interested in this kind of thing. having root access doesnt make your device extra powerful or anything. but can enjoy some very cool things. ~titanium backup: save all your apps and data. example i play temple run on my phone reach 1million high scrore and bought all power ups. then i want to play on nexus 7. oh crap i have to start from 0 with no power ups. no problem, titanium backup it on my phone, transfer to my tablet, restpre. Rooting is good. It opens up alot of new possibilities which people usually wouldn't see. And if they don't see it in this moment of time, they dun really need it. Let's say one day a moderate user finds that ads within an apps are annoying and he tried to google search for a method to removethe ads, that is when i would say he will need to root his phone and hence the introduction to him in terms of rooting and all that. I won't really recommended amateur/average/moderate/first time users to root their phone immediately after they bought the phone. With all due respect to people falling in this category, rooting can be something which sounds alien to them and any mistakes within the steps and pooof! Their money flies away. And not all people here are as helpful as those in XDA. Last time when my Kindle Fire went into a bootloop, i pmed one of the kindle fire more active members here and upon knowing that he won't be able to charge me in helping me to root, my pm was ignored almost immediately and was left alone dealing with my precious 21st birthday present. Until i seeked for help in XDA that is. Rooting may be easy to learn. But learning requires motivation. And until people see the need to root they wouldn't have the motivation to learn. Of course by then when they are ready to learn, there's no more reason to discourage them from rooting again. QUOTE(fwhoam @ Jan 25 2013, 12:03 PM) Of course its not a Ferrari. Its a proton with a Mercedes engine. Something we won't normally see in the market. |
