guys I have a few questions..

basically I am planning to get the y580 the full HD, DVD writer, 500gb HDD model cuz it starts at 2700

1... I want to upgrade ram to 16gb. its cost about 200rm to do that so its worth it I suppose. only problem is that now most of this model comes with windows 8. I dont want that. I want windows 7 and the problem with that is that this model comes with home basic whic is not compatible with 16gb ram. what do I do ? I do not want the i7 3610 model. do you know how I can get windows 7 premium, professional or ultimate ? is there any seller here who is actually doing that ?

2.. I also want to upgrade to SSD. either I get an msata and keep the HDD inside or I replace the HDD with a 2.5" SSD. msata does not seem to be a viable option at the moment as it is much more expensive perGB in malaysia and also the R/W speeds are much less compared to sata 3 SSD.
now I just want o know that when I do get one, how easy is it to transfer the OS to the SSD? is it a pain to do this ? can I do it by my self?
will that void my warranty? (though I dont think it should)

3.. current owners.. how do you find this machine ? is it worth the price?
I currently use a second generation i5 with 8gb ram. and I work on autodesk maya.. this is the only laptop I found in my budget that seemed like a worthwhile upgrade (on paper). how is it to use though?
I ask because once I make this choice I plan to be stuck with it for atleast the next 2-3 years. I dont wanna USE a PC for now

1. you can ask the shop first if they can do the upgrade to Win7 Home Premium or anything that you want... other than that, you can also by it seperately from other shop (pretty much most of computer shop sells OS as well) or else, you can check the Garage Sales.

2. Upon receiving your laptop, create an image using disk imaging software and you can restore it into your SSD later... totally doable on your own... though I'm not sure if it's possible to do it with supplied recovery software...

3. I'm using it, with 8GB RAM... I'm moving from a desktop with i7-2600K and GTX560... for me, this is a good replacement... not exactly an upgrade but a very good replacement.... having the same capability with very good pricetag... though, don't be surprise with the heat... it's a laptop, not a desktop... I can't ask anything more from this laptop with that price...
Open task manager and check your resource utilization... I assumed all are running on desktop, not metro...

man now im so confused. y580 vs y500 vs y400

I guess the first main question would be GTX660M vs GT650M and I really dont understand all the jargon on the comparison sites. I guess in the real world, while actually playing games, does it make a somewhat significant difference?

thenext would definately be that I dont understand what this whole ultrabay thing does. from my understanding basically its a slot where you can replace the the DVD drive with a harddisk and case or another graphic card and case. I guess that would be useful if playing super high demanding games. but otherwise its useless. the reason this is confusing for me is that I dont play too many games. im not a gamer. but when I do play accidentally start of playing something, the whole world shuts down for like a week. last time I did that was 2 years ago. ive been on rehab ever since.

3rdly now a lot of sellers dont have the y580. and y500 is quite expensive i believe. does the price drop if I dont buy a nother graphics card and go for a simple DVD drive instead? the y480 is around the same price as the y580 non blu-ray. but some sellers say its 14 inch and some say its 15.6. im confused. also is it 1080p full HD? cuz im not sure.

other than these which is a better machine in terms of looks, build quality and structure and cooling etc ? I really have no idea about all this.

hoping to get some real world answers that a semi-nerd-semi-noob can understand

Y580 and Y500 is 15.6" screen laptop while Y480 and Y400 is 14" screen laptop. 14" screnn won't have 1080p full HD, but 15.6" screen can have that.

If you just play occasionally, I would recommend Y580 if you can find one... reason is simple, cheaper, more powerful single GPU... I believe you dont want to give yourself a headache with SLI config and stuff...

GT650M acting alone is not that powerful but good enough for occasional gaming... GTX660M will give some extra boost + TXAA... however, dual GT650M in Y500 is much much powerful if you really care about performance and quality but if you ask me, if you last play games heavily 2 years ago I am pretty much doubt that you're willing to spend time and money for SLI config... but if I'm wrong, I will greatly recommend you Y500 with dual GT650M.

now, Lenovo Malaysia doesn't really have a Y500 set that doesn't come with extra GT650M I believe... if you can find one, high likely it's imported set... and it's cheaper than dual GT650M config.

in terms of cooling, Y500 has better cooling design... Y580 is not that bad after you apply the workarounds...

yeah.. not a super gamer here.. but I want to mostly use it for animation like autodesk maya. planning to upgrade to SSD and 16gb ram. just confused about what to go for. I guess at this point im gonna stick with the y580. though I could opt for the y400 also and buy my self a 24 inch FHD screen. since I wouldnt really watch high quality movies on a small 15 inch screen anyway. im assuming I wont need a FHD screen on the laptop if I have an external one. or do I need an FHD screen on the laptop to be able to get that quality on an external screen aswell?

also http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/contr...8CC966BC85BD69C

says here under y400 that its FHD. im assuming thats full HD

thanks for the help though.

Y580/Y480/Y400 would be in your prefered range dude. Nuff said. and Y480 and Y400 (being that is 14") no FHD capable, trust me. Cooling wouldn't be a problem coz your not really a hardcore gamer these laptops handle well in idle operations and some multimedia tasking so cooling problems don't seem to be an issue here. Since you also plan to use an external display this seems just right for you. Upgrading SSDs should be ok if you concern about data performance and heat issues the Y580/Y480 had but not Y400 coz it has betting cooling design. At least with the basic spec you could get these under rm3000 and less.  thumbup.gif  Hope this helps you~

correct me if im wrong.. the y400 comes with a dvd drive.. but it is also swappable ? as in I can use a graphic card ultrabay If I want to and if i purchase it separately ?

planning to either use a crucial msata or samsung 830/840 normal SSD. how is the crucial msata performance wise? mostly other msatas are more expensive and read write speeds are lower compared to normal SSDs

and whats the work around for the wifi card ? can you change that

someone here said the temperatures with running windows 7 are not high.. can anyone confirm that ?

i really dont understand what all this sequential read and write things mean. but it confuses me cuz normal SSD the write speed is somewhere around 500 and msata is 175. but the price is the same. now just by looking at the umber you feel oh.. the msata is lamer.. and maybe it is.. but in the real world does that number difference make much difference say for things like boot up time, or copying files? how much difference would there be between the two if copying a 1gb file or say files equalling 1gb from one location to the other and also booting up the PC? and would both of them still be substantially better than an HDD? or is upgrading to an msata to keep the HDD inside the laptop not worth the price as it would be to upgrade to normal 2.5 SSD?

the reason why mSATA & SSD price is almost the same bcos of the usability of mSATA... there's no need to replace the current HDD when installing mSATA compared to SSD... besides, mSATA can be used as a cache drive, means no need to reinstall/migrate OS into the mSATA...
there's should be noticable speed difference between mSATA & SSD, but if you look clearly, there's different type of sequential read/write. the normal one that you mention (500 vs 175) is usually applies for large file.. instead, there's another sequential (4K) that is used for smaller files, which usually  applies for os stuff that actually affect the normal daily usage...  unsure.gif
and yes, both mSATA & SSD are better than hdd in term of speed, temp etc.. except price  laugh.gif
as for whether the price is worth or not, it is usually depends on the user and the machine itself... for example, y480/580 can use both method, either mSATA/HDD + ODD combo or SSD + HDD combo but for y400/500 they better go for mSATA/HDD bcos the standard caddy isn't appliable to both laptop. so, if they wanna use SSD, they have to remove the HDD & probably change them into external drive. besides, i dun think that y500 user wanna sacrifice their SLI configuration just for SSD/HDD combo  brows.gif

thanks bro but I was actually leaning towards Y580 since the GTX660 card is what I prefer cuz I dont play too many games and the SLI y500 is too pricey as well. so in terms of y580 what do you suggest? also what is a cache drive ? would using the SSD as a cache drive be the same as using the SSD as primary boot drive with OS .. in terms of speed and performance of course. also If you were me and going for the y580 (though I do like the y500 design and weight) would go for mSATA+HDD or just a single SSD?

the existence of cache drive will speed up things a little bit, but will not have the same access speed through SSD...

the way it works is, computer will make a copy of things that is frequently accessed into the cache drive so that it doesn't have to go through slow painful process looking for stuff inside the HDD... so stuff that you frequently access will be available faster...

ah.. makes sense.. but i suppose that really wont be as fast as an SSD. in any case sorry for being a noob.. well we all start somewhere

hi guys.. finally bought the y580. had to get the bluray one cuz the other one cannot find stock anymore, tried lowyat plaza, forums and lelong. didnt want to spend that extra 500 bucks for bluray and 500gb hard disk space, but I had to. though It would have been useful to have that 500 bucks extra right now but I suppose thats spilt milk.

anyhoo,
now i want to upgrade to SSD
few question
1. im considering msata 120gb for primary boot OS drive
I know its sata 2 and not sata 3. but hey atleast I dont have to connect an external all the time. is this a good idea? I know its not gonna be as fast as a sata 3 ssd .. but would it be fast enough to not feel like the computer is slow? what are the booting speeds of an msata data 2?

2. mushkin has a sata 3 msata available for almost 500rm. i think it would be worth it the y580 msata slot can detect data 3. anybody have any idea about this?

3. does anyone want to buy my 1 tb 2.5" HDD from the y580 for 200rm ? atleast this way I can afford a normal SSD.

4. now lets say I get my SSD. now what ? how to transfer my OS to the ssd? is msata capable of being the primary drive or will it end up being just a cache drive?

5. should i instal windows 7 home premium again and use the serial number at the bottom ? or do I need to clone my hard drive into the SSD or something ?

6. what kind of cooling base would you suggest? since on the bottom of the y580 there are 2 vents at the back and 1 towards the front at odd locations

7. any other suggestions/hacks for y580 to maximize cooling and performance and life ?

mr.mrl I hope yr listening

hey hey.. I like my disk drive. not that I dont want any dvd drive. i have never used blu ray and I dont know when I will use one either. but I do use DVDs. I burn all my movies and tv series there. so no thats not happening. but yeah I could sell the blu ray drive and purchase a DVD drive. that could work.

storage I am not to concerned about since I do have 1.5tb in externals. but it would be nice to have some space in the laptop itself and nit have to carry an external all the time.

maybe Ill just try n sell off the 5400rpm 1tb and swap it with 180gb SSD. whenever it gets full i just burn some disks or put it all in my external. that could work too. and who knows maybe by the end of this year I can afford to buy blu ray movies and a 42 inch TV or something.

Bought from this nice chap here: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&hl=Lenovo+Y580
In my opinion the price is really good. Plus he upgraded the SSD for me on the spot when I went to his shop to purchase it.  rclxms.gif
Did not upgrade the RAM, 8 gb is enough for me.  smile.gif

At first I was really contemplating on getting the Y500 with dual GPUs, but for about the same price, I am sacrificing the following:
Y500 has 4gb ram, Y580 has 8 gb
Y500 no blu ray
Y500 at RM 3488 you can't get the SSD

But of course if you're looking for pure framerate pawnage, look no further than the Y500. I'm ok with just a single GTX660, Guild Wars 2 is going at around 50 fps with medium  settings. ^^

no f***ing way !! with SSD ?! thats crazy.. i bought mine for 3400 with 16gb ram but thats about the only upgrade I got. f*** my life

Don't buy new Windows. You can download the official Windows from here
http://www.w7forums.com/official-windows-7...ads-t12325.html

create your bootable dvd,
reformat your laptop,
then activate your copy via phone using the key that comes with your laptop
there will be instructions given
it is advisable that you search for step by step guide first on how to reformat your laptop esp. if you want to keep your OKR or create partition
I have clean install my Y580, and I love it more icon_rolleyes.gif totally love it!  thumbup.gif

so help me out bro.. i want to put an SSD. i think 120gb would be fine for me .. I only want to use it for running stuff. I cant affort 240gb. maybe i can buy intel 330 180gb.. that should be enough

anyway any suggestion on SSD brand ?

also once I get it.. I do a clean install on the SSD for win 7 home prem? can I still install some of lenovos included software n all ? the could be useful .. or are they just unnecessary ? cuz unlike phones PC softwares are not bloat ware cuz they dont run on their own or take up memory.

can I still partition it ? and can I wipe the 1tb HDD CLEAN then through usb ?

guys any suggestion for an SSD for lenovo y580?
im contemplating between intel 330 120gb and samsung 840 120gb.
I can get both for 320rm.
I actually wanted inet 330 180gb cuz of the larger space.. and it price was only 405 at lowyat. but there is no stock. its much more expensive here on the forums. dont know if the stock is there or not

any other suggestions like pleater model? or corsair model?

Im confused because I dont know how to judge all these based on the benchmark tests n all that. i dont know how that would apply to for
playing games, watching movies, running apps like photoshop or 3d max.
i can live with the 120gb space cuz I dont really need to keep my personal data in the SSD. I can just keep it in my external. only softwares and OS go into the SSD.

oh yeah I do prefer something with international warranty though

y not get msata ssd for ur y580.. i m using 120gb mushkin msata.. so i can still keep my HDD in it.. working fine so far..
also cost rm300+ from newegg..
and your reply is useful...  yawn.gif

i considered the msata... sata 2 crucial was around 320 or so 120gb. sata 3 mushkin for about 500 and so was plextor. well why do sata 2 when you can do sata 3 and why do 120gb when can get 180 or higher for the same price. if i had a higher budget i would have definately considered a sata 3 msata.. but I dont. also whats newegg.. im not aware of this site ..
