Run some game and then open HWMonitor?
or try use OpenHardwareMonitor.

I would prefer
CPU:40-50C
GPU:50-60C
HDD:30-45C
for idle/browsing.

But for Optimus-enabled notebook.
Better turn off nVidia temperature monitoring, because you would just keep the nVidia turning on just for the sake reporting the temp, which waste energy and heat..

What make you think its slower?

Most likely the HDD affecting it...

Asus Altec Lansing in A-series are weak.
Bang & Olufsen on the Asus N46/N56 is better.

Performance wise, the Y500 would last longer.

Maybe you didn't install the USB 3.0 driver.

The cooler works since it just need power, not data.
