i'm thinking of getting one. either y580 or y500. which one is a better buy?
580 has a 660M, but i heard that 500 has better cooling system?

wanna game with this laptop. mostly wanna connect to my 1080p HDTV.
thanks

+1. I'm thinking of getting Y580, but I saw Y500 can do SLI 550M by sacrificing the drive bay. Looks awesome...

I thought 550M SLI has better performance than 560m, right? And Y500 body is mostly metal instead of plastic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I check the review. Those heavy games can run under ultra setting. ( like battlefield 3, crysis ). For those Y580 users, I wanna ask, is it really playable when the fps is around 30+? Cause I personally do feel the screen is a bit jerky when the fps is 30+ compare with fps 40+

U typo error from ur first post until now... laugh.gif
It's GT650M SLi and GTX 660M
Well if u wanna play it more smoothly, set ur setting to 1366x768/1600x900
*
ahh... my bad.... one thing i wanna ask since you already mentioned. Does the quality of 1366x768 same as 1080p? Since the screen size is just 15 inches. I don't think it will make any diff, except for watching HD movie of course.

QUOTE(kuroneko0509 @ Dec 10 2012, 12:44 AM)
its 660m.... anyway, it depends actually... since some games got problem with SLI config....
*
I have to agree on this. Actually most of the games do have problem with SLI, and requires times for Nvidia to release the patches. I maybe just get y580m and get 670 card for my desktop. Much efficiency i think....

I thought for 15inches, full screen is 1366x768??? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Wow. I'm really outdated, now I'm still using Dell 1420 with 8400gs graphic card!! Its around 5 years with me already.
I checked the review, found out that the heat is quite severe for y580 especially on palm location. Am I correct?

well, for me, it is a bit warm when playing games, but i don't think it that severe in my opinion
*
Hmm.. Okk.. I will go have a look at these 2 models, y580 and y500. I might just getting a decent graphic card as I'm working, and won't spend so much time on gaming laptop, but at least it can be played at a playable level.

I've never benchmark AC3 because somehow Razer GameBooster has problem with the way this game running... but I'm pretty sure it's beyond 30fps, though I think I played at 1600x900 and medium settings (can't exactly remember, haven't been on the game for quite some time already)

FarCry 3 and Crysis 2, I've never tried but I would expect no problem for Crysis 2 reaching 60fps though might not be at high settings.

I'm using Y580 btw (GTX660M)
*
I so hope I can play crysis 2 with max setting under 1600x900. O well... sweat.gif

I have checked the review of Y580. I wanna asked.

1) Msata I just need to insert into the laptop, instead of replacing the harddisk drive right?
2) If I purchase SSD drive, which means I have to take out the 3.5 harddisk drive right?
3) Msata and 2.5 inches SSD, do both prices make a huge gap?
4) Can we overclock the graphic card?

If international warranty then should be okay but for the warranty extension I don't think you cannot do it locally. Alternatively, you can extend the warranty online via the Lenovo US webpage...
1. Correct.
2. Correct. As the port for the original HDD is SATA3, you need to put your SSD there so that you can utilize the max performance, while moving your HDD to the ODD which is only SATA2 but it's more than enough to sustain the performance of an ordinary HDD.
3. Normally yes for Malaysian market pricing, but you can get equal value of mSATA unit for the equal capacity of a 2.5" SSD at Newegg. But do note that the mSATA for Y580 is only supported until SATA2 speed so this might be a bottleneck for the new SATA3 mSATA model.
4. Yes, just go Google and you can come up with a lot of stuff for that.
*
2) O.... Y580 also has the ODD to insert the HDD in order to sacrifice the DVD writer??? So meaning to have its performance at its best, just change HDD to SSD and place HDD to ODD, am I correct?

3) Wow this one I really don't know.

4) Actually have you tried to OC it? Just now I went shopping centre and took a look at the Y580, to be frankly, the palm rest did feel some heat even without playing games compare with other lappies. I'm wondering what is the temperature if playing the game in full performance.

2. Correct
3. Yup... beware of bottleneck.
4.Nope, actually i haven't own this model yet, ordered but not yet... tongue.gif
Logically, as you said it's already warm under normal operation, for sure it will be even warmer if you OCed it. As for how high will the temperature shoots, you have to go Google or ask around see if any of the owners here did actually OCed their unit... I believe without OC i read highest temperature for GPU is around 90?
Yeah, heard that even the disty facing low on supply... and so I end up buying an Intel 520 240GB... thumbup.gif
*
Have you tried to solve the overheating issue, maybe by placing a cooling pad.... or anything??? I have an existing Dell 1420, to tell you the truth, the ventilation is really sux and the heat is getting worse on my palm rest without the good performance cooling pad. cry.gif

I dont think much can be done about the heat... If you're really uncomfortable about the heat at palm rest just because you don't like warmed up hand, I would suggest external keyboards... if you're worried it will damage your hardware as time goes, I think nothing to worry much....
*
hmmm.... okk Then maybe external keyboard would be the best way to keep my palm feel cool. I hope my awesome cooling pad can cool it down easily. Cause my current laptop is being cooled down quite effective by my cooling pad.

QUOTE(sharp903sh finder @ Dec 24 2012, 10:31 AM)
u can chagn de hdd to odd to prevent de hdd to get hot wen playing games, for de cpu n cpu, i think all u can do is add a cooling pad or a fan

i think its hot even without gaming because of the i7(not sure though) becuz from i know, an i7 is quite warm even on idle,
my y580 temp is cpu=52 gpu=44 hdd=50 hmm.gif on normal usage
i think my hdd is quite hot and i thinking to change it to odd hmm.gif
*
I thought i7 has its idle state with less power usage. According to my research, the graphic card switching is based on the task you do and system will eventually evaluate whether it needs to use advanced graphic power or not.

I don't quite like the way y580 dissipate the heat though. Unlike Y500 which has a huge ventilation at btm. Or maybe it has seperate ventilation for harddisk and graphic card. That's why they said Y580 is not considered a gaming laptop compare with Asus G series.

well.... originally y480/580 were branded officially by lenovo as multimedia laptop, not gaming..... it is us actually who called that way etc just bcos of the specs.....  laugh.gif
*
Yeah. Thats true, its so sad that it has its own disadvantage though, but having said that, 660m with that price tag is really worth every buck. rclxm9.gif

I got the price which is RM2799 now. Is there anything that I might get it free such as free headset or watsoever? Or does the price drop even lower? Kindly advised. Thanks.

I finally ordered Y580 and will arrived on Wednesday, at a cost of RM2799. It comes with Windows 8 Business Edition which I never thought of having this OS at all.

I end up didn't purchase the SSD because i feel a big hole in my wallet =_=. But I do get free wireless keyboard and mouse from Logitech which is not a bad call after all. smile.gif

Reason I decide to get Y580

1) Cheapest laptop with 660M graphic card, no doubt about it.
2) 3rd Generation Core I7 which no doubt make my photo editing even faster.

I forgot to upgrade my RAM..... Maybe purchase it during collect my laptop.
