The standard caddy bay for HDD might not fit Y500 due to special  design on its ports/shape/thickness.  laugh.gif
Even Y500 & Y400 ultrabay are not interchangable due to its designs.

There are special design ultrabay for Y500 and Y400 from Lenovo, but not yet available in local market.
Optional hotswappable ultrabay are for cooling fans, HDD, dvdrom, GC(gt650m) as pic:

the easiest is usually register on lenovo website, but then sometimes it didn't register the warranty correctly..
the best way is to email them to register your laptop warranty. that way u need to attach your receipt. a simple digital photo or scanned is enough. i believe i've quoted hikashi's post in 1st page for the proper steps... eventhough his post mentioned for y480/580, i believe it's applicable to y400/500 too smile.gif

edit: base warranty i believe basic warranty that applicable... since not all country offer 2 year warranty for lenovo product. basically our 2 year warranty is based on 1 year base warranty + 1 year extended warranty (smth like that)

Anyone feels that web browsing on Windows 8 will slow down every now and then? It's not constant though, if I load a page after not touching the browser for some time, it will load quite slowly. After that it will be fast again. However, the cycle repeats itself everytime I leave the browser not doing anything.

Local set Y480 already phased out already and replaced by Y400 with better designs. Most of the Y480 available in the market are grey imported set (AP set). You might get a refurbished set or end up with major warranty claims problem. Its best to avoid and go for local set Y400. nod.gif

Try to look for a sealed unit.
I think some sellers will still have stock for it.

Buying laptop is not like buying vegetable. We need to look at price/performance and also good service/warranty support. What happens if we are unlucky to get a refurbished set or bad apple for cheaper imported set and local Lenovo reject your warranty as reported in http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2647407. sweat.gif

Dont get carry away by the good offers on cheaper imported set (AP set) drool.gif rclxm9.gif
and overlook the important of good service & warranty support before we cry.gif mad.gif

Spend a bit extra for local set Y400 and you get better designs, cooling and optional swappable ultrabay. thumbup.gif
You can check the Y400 pricing in garage sales & nego for it. nod.gif

guys I have a few questions..

basically I am planning to get the y580 the full HD, DVD writer, 500gb HDD model cuz it starts at 2700

1... I want to upgrade ram to 16gb. its cost about 200rm to do that so its worth it I suppose. only problem is that now most of this model comes with windows 8. I dont want that. I want windows 7 and the problem with that is that this model comes with home basic whic is not compatible with 16gb ram. what do I do ? I do not want the i7 3610 model. do you know how I can get windows 7 premium, professional or ultimate ? is there any seller here who is actually doing that ?

2.. I also want to upgrade to SSD. either I get an msata and keep the HDD inside or I replace the HDD with a 2.5" SSD. msata does not seem to be a viable option at the moment as it is much more expensive perGB in malaysia and also the R/W speeds are much less compared to sata 3 SSD.
now I just want o know that when I do get one, how easy is it to transfer the OS to the SSD? is it a pain to do this ? can I do it by my self?
will that void my warranty? (though I dont think it should)

3.. current owners.. how do you find this machine ? is it worth the price?
I currently use a second generation i5 with 8gb ram. and I work on autodesk maya.. this is the only laptop I found in my budget that seemed like a worthwhile upgrade (on paper). how is it to use though?
I ask because once I make this choice I plan to be stuck with it for atleast the next 2-3 years. I dont wanna USE a PC for now
