Breaking News :
North Korea Is Said to Move Missiles

By REUTERS
Published: April 21, 2013

SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) — North Korea has moved two short-range missile launchers to its east coast in an indication that it is pushing ahead with preparations for a test launching, a South Korean news agency reported on Sunday.

South Korea and its allies have been expecting some sort of North Korean missile launching during weeks of heightened hostility on the Korean Peninsula.

An unidentified South Korean military source told the South’s Yonhap news agency that satellite imagery showed that North Korean forces had moved two mobile missile launchers for short-range Scud missiles to South Hamgyeong Province.

“The military is closely watching the North’s latest preparations for a missile launch,” the source said.

The North moved two midrange Musudan missiles in early April and placed seven mobile launchers in the same area, Yonhap said.

Typhoon fighter jet performs first laser guided, self designating, simultaneous guided bomb drops
Posted by David Cenciotti - April 19, 2013 - The Aviationist

Equipped with new P1E software, a Eurofighter Typhoon in a multirole configuration featuring both air-to-surface and air-to-air weapons (2 GBU-16 plus 1 Laser Designation Pod plus 2 AIM-9L plus 2 underwing tanks) recently conducted the first laser guided, self designating, simultaneous guided bomb drops: in other words, the European jet attacked and destroyed two different targets at the same time.

user posted image

According to Eurofighter, further successful tests were conducted using the same two-seater plane with 2 x SRAAM, 4 x AMRAAM, 2 x underwing tanks, 4 x GBU-16 and 1 x LDP pod;  approximately double the F-16 weapons load.

The tests were aimed at proving that the Typhoon is not only an air dominance fighter capable to achieve some F-22 kills in mock aerial combat during last year’s Red Flag Alaska, but is also an effective precision air-to-surface platform, as proved by the Libya Air War.

“P1E brings full simultaneous multi-role capabilities to the Air Forces currently operating the Eurofighter Typhoon with full integration of the Litening II Laser Designation Pod and Precision Guided Munitions. P1E also delivers Mode 5 IFF, improved Radios and Direct Voice Input, Air-to-Surface integration of the Helmet Mounted Sight System, improved Air-to-Air capabilities including digital integration of Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles, updated MIDs functionalities for enhanced interoperability with coalition forces, and many aspects from the popular UK Radar and Drop programmes which delivered improvements to the Tranche 1 aircraft” Eurofighter says.

Future enhancement programmes will integrate even more weapon systems and capabilities to the aircraft such as Storm Shadow, Brimstone and the Meteor missiles.

S Korea to build Thai navy frigate

Published: 21 Apr 2013 at 00.00

The Royal Thai Navy has chosen a South Korean naval ship manufacturer to build a new frigate that will cost about 13 billion baht.

An RTN selection committee announced on Friday it had chosen Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to manufacture the frigate, a navy source said.

The company was one of the last two South Korean firms to enter the final round of the bid organised by the RTN panel.

The other three foreign firms ousted from the previous rounds were from Spain, Italy and China.

RTN chief of staff Chakchai Phucharoenyot, who chaired the panel, said Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering was selected because it had proposed specifications for the frigate that were in line with the navy's demands.

The navy also asked the company to manufacture a Combat Management System (CMS) which can be allied to the systems installed in the frigates HTMS Naresuan and HTMS Taksin, he said.

The frigate, which will be the first South Korean-manufactured navy ship in Thailand, is expected to be commissioned in two years' time, Adm Chakchai said.

The new frigate will have a displacement of between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes.

The cabinet earlier approved the RTN's procurement of two frigates with a budget of 30 billion baht. The frigates will be considered for manufacturing one by one.

According to the navy source, the RTN preferred European frigates but they were too expensive.

Meanwhile, a Defence Ministry source revealed that Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat will lead military top brass on a visit to Russia between Tuesday and next Monday to bolster military ties.

Thai delegates will inspect the armaments industry in Russia, the source said.

F-18 probably we can get it as soon as 2015-2017
Rafale depending on the progress of their AESA radar. should be around the same times as F-18.
EF fully depend on their T-3 development. most likely after 2016?

Indonesian Navy selects NAUTIS Class A FMB Simulators for SIGMA Class Corvette bridge training

Date posted: 18-04-2013

For training of its Sigma Class Corvette bridge personnel, the Indonesian Navy and Ministry of Defence selected VSTEP to supply two Class A NAUTIS Full Mission Bridge (FMB) Simulators for its Kobangdikal marine training facility in Surabaya.

The Indonesian Navy is currently modernizing its fleet to more effectively combat maritime crime and piracy. Beginning 2012, the Indonesian Navy added several Sigma Class Corvettes to its active fleet. To allow realistic training of the Sigma Class bridge personnel, the Navy ordered two NAUTIS Full Mission Bridge Simulators, each with a 270 degree field of view projected on a cylindrical screen. The simulator bridges match the actual SIGMA Class Corvette bridge, allowing efficient and true-to-life bridge operations and navigation training. The Indonesian Navy also ordered five custom built ports, and customised navigation screens. VSTEP cooperated with local development and implementation partners, to increase the local content.

The NAUTIS FMB simulators have been delivered by maritime simulator developer VSTEP in cooperation with its Indonesian partner Terravision. The Kobangdikal Marine Facility in Surabaya counts as one of the most important development, training and education facilities of the Indonesian Navy. In addition to the two Class A NAUTIS FMB Simulators, two NAUTIS Instructor Stations and  two NAUTIS Desktop Training Simulators have also been installed at the premises.

VSTEP Director, Cristijn Sarvaas: “We are deeply honoured to have been selected as the simulation partner at this prestigious technology centre. The cooperation with our local partners has worked out really well and we look forward to working with them on other projects in the future. We are looking forward to the delivery and commissioning of these impressive simulators, and the training of the local instructors.

HESA Sarir H-110 UCAV

The Sarir (Persian : سریر, meaning " Throne " ) is an Iranian stealth drone which was unveiled in a ceremony in April 2013 by IRIA. The drone is capable of picture recording by the installment of cameras which makes it like a spy UAV and is described as a aerial vehicle that can carry air-to-air missiles with the capability of combat drones. Unlike other drones in Iranian arsenal the Sarir has both nonstop flight capability like Shahed 129 and also carries rockets like Karrar, the drone is described as a stealth air defense vehicle to protect Iranian air space.

Iran F-5 fighter crashes killing two crew

Agence France Presse

Sunday 21 April 2013

TEHRAN: An Iranian US-made F-5 fighter plane crashed Sunday after hitting a mountain in the west of the country, killing both crew members, Iranian media reported.
The two pilots were killed upon impact as the jet fighter hit the mountain near Abadan town of Ilam province, town governor Morad Naseri was quoted as saying.
Naseri said the crash was being investigated by authorities.

The fighter crashed in highlands after it took off from a military air base in Dezful, 460 kilometers (280 miles) southwest of the capital, Tehran, according to a report by the semi-official Mehr news agency. It cited Morad Nasseri, governor of the nearby Abdanan region.

Iran’s air force retains an aging fleet, including US-manufactured aircraft purchased before the 1979 Islamic revolution.
In January 2012, a US-built F-14 fighter crashed minutes after takeoff, also killing both crew.

Is There Anything An F-16 Cannot Do?

April 21, 2013: The U.S. Air Force prefers to use its F-16 fighters for everything. While the F-16 is a capable and versatile aircraft, the main reason for using it so much is because it is so cheap to operate. It costs the air force $23,000 per hour to operate an F-16C. Other fighters are much more expensive. An F-22 costs $68,000 an hour, while an F-15C costs $42,000 and an F-15E $36,000.

The only aircraft that beats the F-16C is the A-10C, which costs $18,000 an hour. But the A-10 is not a fighter and is optimized for ground support. The F-16 can also do that, but not as well. The other ground support aircraft, the AC-130U costs $46,000 an hour. That’s why these are being replaced by C-130 transports ($18,000 an hour) with special cargo containers consisting of sensors and weapons similar to those on the AC-130.

The F-16, like the A-10 can also drop smart bombs. Both aircraft are much cheaper at this than the bombers. The B-52H costs $70,000 an hour, the B-1B $58,000 and the B-2 $169,000. The problem with the bombers is that with smart bombs you don’t need a lot of bombs. So what the F-16 can carry (a dozen or more, depending on weight) is usually adequate in places like Afghanistan. For an attack on, say, North Korea, the bombers would come into their own, at least for the initial assault when there are a lot of targets to hit.

With the right sensors, missiles and electronic weapons plus well-trained pilots the F-16 can beat just about any other fighter out there. For stealth fighters, that would have to include sensors that can handle stealth. But stealth fighters often have the best sensors and electronics as well. Thus against most foes a well tricked out F-16 can do it all.

Thermal images of the Boston bomber hiding in a backyard boat taken by a helicopter’s FLIR

The following thermal images were released on Twitter by the Massachusetts State Police, show the Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarneav hiding in a boat in a Watertow backyard during Apr. 19′s manhunt.

FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red) pods carried by Police helicopters have been an important tool in helping law enforcement locate suspects of the Boston Marathon bombing.

user posted image

The helicopter was able to pick up the heat signature of the individual even if he was hiding under a cover on the boat, and direct tactical teams on the ground over to the area.

Modern IR (infrared) cameras are extremely sensitive to heat: they are capable to pick different temperatures at very long distances. They can pick up heat on a wall from where a hand was placed for a few seconds and show its thermal signature.

You can’t hide from these cameras unless wearing special reflective materials/suits, capable to minimize heat gain and loss.

Northrop Grumman Press Release

Northrop Grumman's SABR Gives F-16 Pilots the Big Picture
SABR Provides High-Definition Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery

user posted image

BALTIMORE – April 16, 2013 – To a pilot, a radar is only as useful as the information it provides, and Northrop Grumman's (NYSE:NOC) Big SAR (synthetic aperture radar) mapping for the Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) delivers the largest, sharpest radar images ever available in an F-16.

The company's SABR has successfully demonstrated several advanced radar capabilities for the F-16, including Big SAR maps with automatic target cueing. The SABR Big SAR offers an unprecedented level of situational awareness and target identification for F-16 pilots.

user posted image

"SABR's Big SAR is high-definition radar imagery that covers a large area on the ground in a single image," said Joseph Ensor, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting Systems Division. "This advance will give F-16 pilots the largest maps with the most detail that they have ever seen in the cockpit. Combined with SABR's automatic target cueing capability, the F-16 will have targeting capabilities unmatched by any other fourth-generation fighter."

user posted image
Designed to fit existing F-16 interfaces; no airframe structural modifications required; weighs less than legacy mechanically scanned array.

SABR is an affordable, multifunction active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar designed specifically for F-16 retrofit. SABR provides longer detection and tracking ranges, high-resolution SAR maps for all-environment precision targeting, interleaved mode operations for greater situational awareness and greater reliability.

Northrop Grumman has nearly four decades of F-16 radar development and integration experience, and has delivered more than 6,000 fire control radars to U.S. and international air forces. The company also supplies the AESA fire control radars for the F-16 Block 60, F-22 and F-35 aircraft.

Phalanx Close-In-Weapon-System Delivered to Adelaide

user posted image

A key piece of the combat system for the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers - the Phalanx Close-In-Weapon-System (CIWS) - has arrived in Adelaide.

The Phalanx system for the future destroyers Hobart and Brisbane have been shipped from the United States to the AWD Alliance, CEO Rod Equid said today.

“The Phalanx CIWS includes a fast-reaction 20mm Gatling gun that will provide the destroyers with a line of defence against anti-ship missiles, littoral or close to shore warfare threats, and aircraft at short range,” Mr Equid said.

“It has the ability to automatically carry out functions usually performed by separate systems including target detection, evaluation, tracking and engagement.

“The weapon system is made up of a rotating cluster of six barrels that fire ammunition at a rate of up to 4,500 rounds per minute, as well as search and track radars, with an integrated electro-optic sensor.

user posted image

“The AWD Phalanx CIWS, the Mk15 Block 1B, is integrated into the Aegis Weapon System and is an updated version of the equipment already in use by the Royal Australian Navy on the Adelaide Class guided-missile frigates.”

The Phalanx is located at the rear of the ship on top of the helicopter hangar, overlooking the flight deck.

The Phalanx CIWS, built by Raytheon Missile Systems USA, was acquired by Raytheon Australia on behalf of the AWD Alliance. The $35 million contract includes the manufacture and delivery of the Phalanx weapon system for all three Air Warfare Destroyers.

The AWD Alliance is executing an innovative program to design, integrate and test the Hobart Class combat system. The combat system for the destroyers is made up of the Aegis weapon system with the Australian-selected additions, interfaced with Aegis using the Australian Tactical Interface.

DSME of S Korea to build Thai navy frigate

The DW 3000H is to be multirole frigate with a focus on anti-submarine warfare (ASW). Primary weapon systems are a single Oto Melara 76 mm gun in a stealth turret, an eight-cell vertical launch system for surface-to-air missiles – very likely the ESSM, eight surface-to-surface missiles – most likely American-built Harpoons or the equivalent Korean-built SSM-700K in two quad launchers located amidships, two 30 mm MSI DS30 guns fitted atop the hangar deck and a Phalanx close-in weapon system that is mounted one deck higher. A pair of decoy launchers is also fitted.

The ASW suite comprises two triple-torpedo tubes in enclosed recesses on the main deck level as well as what appear to be two anti-torpedo decoy launchers mounted atop the hangar deck. A hull-mounted sonar is fitted in a retractable sonar dome, though it is not clear if a towed array system is fitted.

The frigate can accommodate one helicopter in the hangar. The display model shows a Lynx helicopter.
