Lol - ya dont have to be rich to have a couple of macs wink.gif Its just a matter of much power you really want your rig to have and what exactly your trying to accomplish.

Here's mine.

Powerbook 1ghz (tibook) 1-gig ram - Runs most of my audio sequencing software + M-audio Quattro (audio interface) and an external 160gb USB2.0 hdd (Tiger) My trusty performance machine smile.gif

Two G3 Graphite DV SE iMacs 500mhz - 512 mbs ram each - 30gig hdd in both. One as a surfing machine in the living room (Tiger) - the other running Ubuntu as a linux playtest machine.

G4 466 (DA) PowerPC - with no HDD sad.gif I actually have no idea what to do with this machine.

and my favorite little piece of junk...

Beige G3 266 (Overclocked to 315mhz) with 160mbs (WOOSH!), 5gb hdd and 4gb hdd running Mac OS9. This is my audio programming machine with Max MSP and Supercollider. The lovely thing about this machine is the built in RCA stereo audio and video input / outputs. I run it every now and then with Protools FREE plugged into my mixer as a Digital Audio Workstation.

All the machines I own are all networked through Appletalk - so sharing files throughout the house is really super easy too.

I got the imacs for RM250 each
The Beige G3 and G4 for free.
Ram scrounged from various computers and the HDD's dug out from old computers.

The TRICK is to visit audio / visual studios like post production houses and music production studios that need to cycle through their systems really quickly. Most of the time they can't be bothered to throw out their machines, so they keep them around. Just keep your eyes peeled until they get some new MD or something and wanna do a spring clean - then go NUTS with all the junk that they offload - ya never know what they might wanna throw out!

I'm currently eyeing a powerbook with a broken screen - I'm planning to just plug in an external keyboard and monitor and just use it as a desktop replacement for something.

But with that said, if anyone has a Classic or Color Classic they're willing to offload, I wouldn't mind pitching a few bucks for that smile.gif

Have fun digging!

Wuuuut? Thats like a TOTAL rippoff. If I see anything I'll make sure I'll slap it up here. But keep in mind though, when I got my BG3 there was like a CARPET worth of dust inside. What was the condition that they were selling it to you to?

You can get some really cheap candy-ibooks on Lelong.com.my last I checked.

Abused throughout the years, but still usable. I was trying to get one of their G4 MDDs btw.... Those G3 were only running OS Classic 8.6....  sweat.gif

LOL - mine was one of their old AsiaOnTime machines. Took me days to dust it spick and spam - Its running 9.22 now with Protools Free (one of the better DAW softwares). Very happy with it.

The MDD's a great - there are a couple of overclock guides online if you dare to go in there with a soldering iron *shudder*

What do you plan to do with it?

Crunching and BT.... and most like used as a server....

Cause I need to unload some of these tasks on my main rig....

btw, ProTools Free only has 8 tracks, is it sufficient....?  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

Oh yeah - its not really meant for like major mixdowns. But it sits next to my DJ mixer and records sets enough for podcasts and demos. A couple of more tracks for voiceovers or effects. And its free - so I can pretend to have an expensive studio (although its totally comprised of old mac junk)

Plus the box is really really nice for MaxMSP and Jitter stuffs.

The MAJOR mixdowns happen on the Powerbook in Digital Performer biggrin.gif
