not sure if this has been mentioned before but i attempted to operate boot camp to install vista using an external usb dvd rom (as my internal is extremely dodgy and will not read at times) yesterday and it failed.
turns out that, it is alright to reinstall mac os x using an external drive but not vice versa (via boot camp)
i suppose that my only feasible option is to have the internal one replaced, as recommended by many forums. any other suggestions from LYN then?
