If you want to save time ... just watch the movie in MKV format on your iPad .. no need to go about formatting the video ... since I don't think you will want to keep the video on the iPad after you have watched it

You can use AVPlayerHD (and there are lots more out there) which allow you to transfer your MKV file to your iPad and watch it without conversion ... 720i seems to have the best performance.... transfer the files using iTunes

Well, if you've got a jailbroken ipad..
You can just install XBMC and you'll be able to play almost all mkv file smoothly without having to convert them.

For my ipad 3, I was able to play all my mkv bluray rips smoothly without any stuttering issues.
Unless you prefer smaller video file of course, you could try some of those mp4 converter.

Convert because MKV files damn huge... up to 25GB also have. If convert to M4V, small only... max also 2GB. And u don't need HD quality when watching outside... I converted some of my MKV movies using iPad profile with Handbrake. Good enough.

In 12 hours, I can convert 5-6 movies. Enough for travelling.

5-6 movies is about 12 GB (assuming 2 GB per movie) ... still can easily fit on the iPad for watching then just delete them after watching ... I don't see the benefit of wasting so much time doing the conversion ... also you won't keep the movie on the iPad to watch over and over again

Some movies worth keeping and watching many times. Star Wars or Star Trek for example.

I would advise against converting, and just get Azul Media Player. It plays most of my 720p and 1080p files almost flawlessly. On the iPad at least. TV/ external playback using the av adapter is a fail -- stuttering, pixelated mess.

Yup, indeed XBMC play MKV very well, play very smooth without any lagging from local and even stream via Wifi from NAS smile.gif

My thoughts exactly ... even if the show is meant to be watched over and over again ... it's not meant to be watched on the iPad ... kills the sensation of a pure classic ..... watch it on the big screen ....
