Apacer Giant II 1866MHz 9-11-9 (4GbX2)


Introduction
In the early 2000′s, Apacer Technology is seen the only competitor to Kingston Technology here in Malaysia. They were previously pretty well known with with their DRAM and USB Flash storage product line. However, Apacer has long lost its grip especially in the Performance Memory category, replaced with the likes of G.Skill, Crucial, Corsair or perhaps AVEXIR which has hit the local market recently. Currently distributed by Build Technology Supply Sdn. Bhd., many may not know that there’s indeed Performance Memory offerings locally. Similar like AVEXIR who approached OCDrift.com to review their memory, we are contacted by Apacer to test the Giant II series and ARES series.

Benchmark

In this review, we include another set of testing other than finding it’s highest OverClocking headroom. We included the “XMP Optimization” test where we enable the XMP and try to squeeze the memory from there on. For old-school OverClockers, they prefer to manually OC the memory rather than using the XMP profile. However, for non-hardcore enthusiast there they prefer just to enable the XMP to get it run on the rated speed. In this case, we would like to share with the non-hardcore enthusiast that by enabling the XMP Profile, you still could squeeze a little extra from any memory kit. XMP Optimization

The default XMP profile of the Apacer Giant II, binned at 1866Mhz, 9-11-9-27-2T at 1.65V. It is Prime95 stable and it must be. However, the memory should be able to do better than this.


The rated frequency is the guarantee speed manufacturer promised and one can run it via XMP. Therefore, there’s always room for OverClocking. Here we choose to tighten the timings from 9-11-9 to 9-10-9


OverClocking

Default setting is 1600MHz 11-11-11. This setting was determined by the Mainboard itself since we are running it on Z77 chipset.




2200MHz 10-11-10-1T @ 1.675v is not too shabby coming out from Apacer since Performance Memory is not their specialty. For your information, some decent kits is able to do 2200MHz 9-10-9 @ 1.65v.


Conclusion
For memory enthusiast, brand is always secondary while the main concern in picking/purchasing a memory kit lies on the chip. Micron hasn’t been doing well in DDR3 comparing to the likes of Elpida, PSC and even Hynix. From our testing, the memory performed decently considering it could hit 2200MHz mark with a 1866MHz rated speed. However, it’s still not enough to shout/scream out loud. We couldn’t stabilize the memory beyond 2200MHz mark in the cost of voltage or timing. The maximum boot speed was 2250MHz @ 1.66v. Also there’s nothing much we can do with the timing, perhaps it’s the characteristic of the Micron D9PFJ
