@wong: Interesting ... "my Will has no issue to be executed in MY & SG. Cost also no big deal for SG as compared to US heheh."

I am not investment savvy. What do these two comments mean? I am also "multi-national" based and have access to Vanguard USA. Any advantage to buying through Singapore?

I have two UTs held over many years with good returns to date. One is a balanced fund, the other an equity growth. If I feel there will be a substantial drop in the next year, should I sell these off or sell part (how much)?

Maybe FD @ 4.7% is contender for 5 yr term if you cannot stand losing chunk.

Are there insured bonds here? Relevant to our local situation? Any examples of such funds?

What do you guys think about etfs in Malaysia? The shariah compliant ones like myetf?

i asked, and like someone replied.... Msian mkt soooooo tiny soooo little movement, hardly worth it. Just compare any local fund of a few million rm compared to typical 100 BILLIONS US$ in typical USA fund. Worst is that here got front/back loading and other loadings, services taxes, etc. You can just invest long term in choice of blue chips at 5%+ per trade or FD 4% and why bother with funds which also charge more? Yes, cynical, but need to think through, help!

Some newbie questions:
Is getting some bond funds as a buffer a good idea now? Are prices for high grade govt bond mixes pretty stable no matter the equity scene? Is a high yield junk bond fund just as risky as equities?

@ yklooi

Lots of good info, everybody appreciative :-)

My original question was more like, any Msian funds that are energy based like Vanguard VGENX or funds that are heavily weighted into oil, funds now at attractive prices?

@ragk : "And, thats insurance protection linked, that's why so much money was deducted when open account."

Read LYN discussions on drawbacks of ILPs. If by any chance you reach 50's 60's in age, the insurance costs rise steeply, lower survivor payment and your coverage cancelled bit by bit.

Can someone point me to the reference I seem to remember about a Malaysian "all seasons survival portfolio" similar to USA Paul Merriman's 10 asset classes?

Or, how should such a portfolio be adjusted for the local scene?

Surely got locally sold funds for:

Small cap value
Large cap value
World stock index
World bond index
World REIT
Europe>
Japan >
China> Index
Australi>
India>

Couldn't a combo of 5-10 of these make a good long term portfolio?

[1] Cash Mgmt Fund - historical pricing valuation

Are there any other funds ANYwhere that use this? Does it go against some regulation, because it seems all other funds even international, don't operate this way.

[2] What is your opinion of the "young investors funds" that accept a small monthly amount over many years to buy into a balanced fund?
