Some poison for RoadBike. rclxms.gif

Frequently Asked Question on what kind of bikes to get:

1) Aluminum bike - 10 speed Tiagra (maybe mixed Tiagra - Sora), priced around RM3k up- this would be the absolute lowest point i would say to start from... any lower and you will land outside of 10speed equipment and any upgrades will certainly be more than the difference you saved not buying this bike.. shimano launched tiagra with 10speed beginning of this year making this a considerable choice... also, this grade of bike will have a more common grade of cockpit (handlebar, stem, seat post, saddle) and cheaper wheels

2) Aluminum bike - 10 speed 105 (maybe mixed 105 - Tiagra), priced around RM3.8k up- most likely the same frame above with a different paint livery, this would be an entry level into shimano's definition of competition components... tiagra would be what they called the top tier among the enthusiast group.. although both 10 speed... but materials and feel... tiagra has a shift indicator while the 105 does not hence giving you a pro feel (what the bike shop will tell you)...mostly.. tiagra has a bit more plasticky bits than 105... some slightly more expensive models might even start offering slightly better wheels like mavic aksiums along with better slightly better graded cockpit...

- i would not try and go past 105 on a aluminum bike... the best brands like specialized or bmc will be selling an aluminum bike equipped with 105 for a little over RM5k... going 1 notch up into ultegra will lead you to start looking into higher end bikes as those bikes will surely creep past RM6k and most likely a mismatch between frame and component grades... you will be practically trying to pair a set of RAYS CE28N onto a Perodua Myvi if you get what i mean in car terms...

3) Carbon bike - 10 speed 105 (possibly not full 105), priced around RM7k up- this would be a foray into performance bicycles... although a carbon frame... but this are not the best carbon has to offer for 2 reasons... carbon cloth grade (less modulus, less weave, lower grade binding agents) and the man power / time needed (less complex layup schedules) to layup the carbon layers into producing a frame... basically a mass produced frame with the lowest production cost possible... not all that bad... it should still be on par if not better with the best of the aluminum frames in terms of stiffness.. basically, component should be similar or slightly better than the aluminum 105 bike depending on the price you pay...

- here i would name one which shocked me quite a bit recently... saw this Look 566...this http://www.lookcycle.com/en/int/route/velo...-bike-2013.html , but i guess a previous year model...... carbon frame with Mavic Aksium wheels... not a complete 105 with some downgraded cranks and calipers... a carbon frame with comfort geometry retailing for RM7.1k if my memory serves me right...

- price is slightly high for some people... but if you look at it...maybe under 30% more if you are looking at a Apex or 105 equipped Specialize Allez

4) free for all - death - bankruptcy - you name it...
- step into this and there will be no return...

up for it??? let's vote...
of course it's out of the question lar... it's not even seen around here let alone having one...

i think the price is more or less the same around here.. kindred got his with force for additional 3k i think..

actually... it is possible to pair 404 and 808...  but mostly tri guys only do that... no sense doing that on road because the 808 is not exactly what you call light in the first place... 303 and 404... don't think it brings much difference except it looks cool...

cross winds are tough and the higher the profile... the tougher it gets.. that is why you saw andy schleck crashed this year in a TT when he was blown off course by a big gust of side wind...

nick wrote about this in a q&a before... read about it..
http://velonews.competitor.com/2012/04/bik...and-more_215372

the zipps are designed to handle all sorts of wind conditions... that being said.. they are still gonna react to heavy winds blowing.. they are not magical in that sense...they are just more efficient at cutting through wind head on... that's all...

Added on November 16, 2012, 9:07 am

yeah... that's a great idea... in fact you can throw in something special in the mix... like amphetamines, corticosteroids, etc.... it'll be the best refueling mix ever... bet you'll put allen lim out of biz...

why didn't USPS thought of distributing PED in energy gels??? that is so inconspicuous...

the reviews said the gel gives you endurance, yet fast recovery.

u can perform the endurance the next day...

there used to be zedtech division in zipp where you can customize your zip... like a different color lock ring, ceramic bearings, carbon hubs like those used by htc highroad...

the rare triplet laced ala fulcrum 2:1 version of the zedtech rear wheel
user posted image

another more normal one.. can customize the stickers and anodization of some parts.. no performance difference most of the customization...

Anyone doing Broga Reverse 116 ? Broga Reserve also known as Jantan loop... clockwise called Janita... Jantan Vs Janita, do these spark anything in your mind?

paying RM120 for the ride, with RM20 refundable if you fill in survey (RM10) and return timing chip (RM10).

Too bad, Broga reserve ride become my third priority.

i have Ocean to Ocean in Thailand run from beach faces Pacific ocean to beach faces Hindi ocean - waiting (in waiting list) or else Penang 28km trail running.

y la all events packs into 1 weekend.

I have 85km TT coming this weekend..any tips on TT? Ride hard in the beginning? All the way? Mixing the pace?
*
Time Trial = TT ?

u thinks too much bro. just ride.

1st time ride, dont put too much expectation but learning...

u can slow in 1st half, push second half.
u can push 1st half, slow in second half.
u can use combo slow push, push slow...
u can slow all the way...
u can push all the way...

most effective way: find a cyclist u hate most, target him... tail behind him... and when crossing the line, overtake him...

or another effective way: find a female cyclist.

ok. finish cocking. back to work.

Haha. Not my 1st time on the route but definitely my 1st time trial event. It is to provide seeding on the upcoming 92km event.

Drafting is allowed, heck you can even go with a group..not a proper TT I would say but definitely is worth pushing for. Bought the classic championchip as well for the timings.

With my cassette I can't keep up with riders with avg speed of 45kmh..some of the trains are pretty fast I could only draft them for a minute only..I tried once chasing a semi-pro like train and they are doing 50kmh constantly..

I still haven't configure my bike to suit the flat route yet..but with the compact and 32T cassette I can ride with  30kmh avg group with no issue..

Drafting is way too much fun! It's effing effortless! Haha
*
u havent change to big crank? get Rotor crank Oval shape straight away!

user posted image

i never see u consider in upgrading crank !!! it's time now!

just tag along the group that you comfortable.... u can start with fast group, if drop, then tag along second group... if drop again, tag along 3rd group, if drop again, tag 4th group... and the process continue if you keep dropping...

ended you're #Foreveralone finishing the event...

btw, road to sucess: 1 week train 9 times. u go figure out urself. This is what P2K top rider female rider kakak do in her training...

ala bro, you now only realize the "syok-ness" of drafting?

i'm been enjoying since im with P2K... after few rides, after upgraded my legs power in order to keep up with them for half of ride distance. yet im still drop.... sad.gif

u have to pump almost everytime u ride. pressure drop after maybe 2 days. what's ideal pressure? sheldon brown has some suggestions. pressure depends on ur weight, and front n rear have different pressure due to different weight distribution. another good article http://www.bikequarterly.com/images/TireDrop.pdf

i pump my front tire 7 bar, rear tyre 8 bar
*
im using Top Peak floor pump... no problem since Nov'11.

Carbon Frame:

so happens i got to know some of bit info: doh.gif

Time frame: RM8,800
Spez SL3 : RM5,400

my P2K member got his SL3 from uncle Boon Fu, the While SL3 team Saxo frame white color. His feedback, 1st 2 weeks of riding, whole body muscles pains.... but after it's awesome feel !

It's much better better than the LOOK frame that he rode since beginning.

hmm.gif hmm.gif so Spez > Look ?

A lesson learnt on my recent TT event..never lose the peloton. In fact I think my real mistake is because I'm not following a group of my comfortable pace which is the 30kmh avg.

I was following the 40kmh group for a good 25km and got dropped halfway to the finish line..and it was an all alone battle..a couple of group passed by but I couldn't attached to any rear wheels..haha

So yes, I need to change to 11-23 cassette that's for sure..and to ride at my comfort avg speed for as long as I could..

I ranked at 168/292 for that 85km course with 2h40m..avg speed of 32kmh..

Top of the list was a UK dude where he ripped the course apart with 2h06m...he's flyinggg
*
why u not able to follow back after dropped from 1st group?

btw, 40kmh on flat is nothing when following behind peloton... learn always stick to behind... aka snake-ing.... haha...

when you're alone and try to tag back the peloton, u need to push n put some 15 second hard effort to catch up with the peloton, and then you can rest n relax behind the peloton!

QUOTE(mrjgx @ Nov 24 2012, 11:50 PM)
Just bought a Tacx Booster..still hasnt tested it yet hopefully the sound wont wake up any of my neighbour..got myself an ultegra 11-23T cassette and a Lezyne floor pump..ready to top up my avg speed a bit more tongue.gif

Ah btw Anyone of u here riding or use a co2 before? Is it that reliable?
*
Co2 is good. When ur tyre flat, it's pump up ur tyre within seconds. Off course, it's also depend on ur affordability ur experience. For me now, i will never use Co2 as it's expensive, the experience doesnt worth the experience. While my P2K member, he uses Co2, when flat, pressure free, change tube and press the Co2... and it's done, we continue to ride.

Co2 is use and throw and only can use ONCE.

QUOTE(butthead @ Nov 26 2012, 09:34 AM)
depends on which LOOK fram he has lar...

566, then of course... 586, maybe... 695, slightish maybe..
*
i thinks it's the top range 695. his second hand LOOK frame managed to sell for RM4,000. should be top range punya kua.

I got dropped because there is a couple of short hills to climb..nevertheless it was a good experience..

Yes 40kmh on a group you don't feel it that much..but I believe my 32T cassette is the culprit for extra power drained.. especially I got passed even on a descend section..so more energy spent there when the speed is excessing 50kmh trying to keep up with the group..

All in all perhaps 40kmh is not at my comfort level yet..30kmh is no issue. I never ride hard and fast before..all this while in KL I only climb and climb and that's pretty slow tongue.gif

Let see if 40kmh is an easy feat once I fix the 11-23T soon
*
hills.

peloton group tend to go faster during hills climb! doh.gif doh.gif

it's where i mostly dropped!!

those cyclist's lung are not human 1... uphills still can pump 40kmh..... so, be mental, physical n lung ready next time... haha
