Tired of grooming n d traditional heel, sit n stay routine. Yes, besides being cute n obedient, ur dog possesses a wide range of natural talents and abilities just waiting 2 b unleashed drool.gif . If u r looking 4 something more interactive, entertaining n certainly more fun 2 b had with ur pooch, here r some dog sports 2 get into.

user posted image
Agility - Great 4 active mutts who luv 2 climb n jump all over d home furniture. D only discipline dat actually encourages dogs 2 hurtle at great speeds n scramble over playground like obstacles. Can start with homemade obstacles (eg. PVC hurdles n bamboo weave poles) but 4 d real equipt, u'll need 2 get in touch with d training schools.

user posted image
Flyball - 1 for d speed demons. Race between 2 relay teams of 4 dogs each, hurdling over 4 low jumps to catch a tennis ball popping out from d flyball box n hurdling back over d jumps with ball in mouth. D flyball box is a rarity here. Without box, can still practice fetching n retrieving ball over hurdles.

user posted image
Frisbee - Minimal equipt required. Frisbee + jumpy n agile dog = Disc dog. D ideal game 2 b playing in a park or beach setting, very cool indeed.

user posted image
Musical freestyle - No equipt required, only music n a fairly attentive dog. Great 4 K9s who luv 2 mirror ur moves n perform tricks. Involves a choreographed set of moves (weaving, spinning, side steps) n tricks performed 2 music 2 gv d impression dat u n ur dog r dance partners, sweet.

Granted v arent blessed with dog friendly parks/facilities + d constant humid weather, v still owe it 2 our loyal 4-legged frens 2 indulge in plenty of play n exercise outdoors. Remember why u got a dog in d 1st place ... rolleyes.gif

Any discussion on dog sports n activities welcomed. cool.gif

sweat.gif You forgot the other fun activity

Lazing around laugh.gif
For the pampered pooch that likes to be rubbed, patted and generally manja/praised to death by family members... no equipment required just a visible place to lie down and look cute... preferably right infront of the TV or living room area... laugh.gif

edit: Most of the stuff you can make yourself or like me too lazy, just teach my dog to jump on tables and chairs... dun let the family findout sweat.gif

tongue.gif Ha ha u r rite, Msia is still far behind in dog sports n as nairud said mostly hv 2 do by urself. 4 agility, there r a few training schools offering classes with proper equipt. 4 flyball, only know of 1 forum member dat hs made a flyball box ... possibly d only 1 in Msia.

4 frisbee, any padang or open area will do. 4 musical freestyle, at home also can practice ...just switch on ur CD.

If u need any ideas/help 2 get started, just shout. cool.gif

biggrin.gif Agreed, lazing around cn b good fun. Just dat if u dig a little, u'll b surprised 2 find out wat ur dog cn do.

Jumping on tables on chairs is a good start. In fact, there's 1 agility obstacle - d pause table which requires d dog 2 come 2 a sudden halt onto for 5 secs b4 tearing thru d rest of d course. Very testing 4 dogs who dun like 2 stay still. vmad.gif

Fitness First got open in IOI Puchong bring Piper to the stairmasta... work it baby laugh.gif

On another note:-

I got a big doggy and at what age should we consider stopping agility coz I'm worried some owners myself included would try this on an old dog with unforseen consequences... just a concern tongue.gif

I think that will have to be up to you. Seriously, so far groovy and jojo is still relatively young so we wouldn't know when to stop unless you research on it.

OT: Piper's weight is not because of her food intake...i'm suspecting there's extra lives inside here whistling.gif

No upper age limit really n depends on how fit ur dog is. Naturally, dogs will slow down once dey reach retirement age after 7-8 yo, depending on wat breed. Hv read bout Border Collies who continue to do agility even after 10 yo. Some breeds like JRTs dun slowdown much either. Easier in Western countries coz dey also hv veteran class as well if ur old dog is still keen n active. Lower jumps n obstacles will b used 2 cater 4 d oldies.

At d other end of d scale, serious jumps training shld only start ven ur dog is < 1yo.

How old is ur dog n r u thinking of doing some agility? flex.gif

laugh.gif i'm just guess that she's having extra "load" only now. 3 weeks after mating, she dont want to eat sweat.gif , then i fed her Heartguard and now baru got appetite, and i noticed she ate a bit , her tummy also got bigger already. and she's still running around, jumping around for her toy balls. blink.gif

might wanna opt for ultra sound scan to confirm or just leave it as it is until the last 2 weeks, maybe then can really see whether she's preggy or not.

Toby is still active but I'm scared his age is catching up to him. Born in 1999... and he's a member of the giant breed... mastiff, rottie and some lab dry.gif is in his blood.

Like you said retirement is just around 7 to 8 yrs old cry.gif

I'm scared to play with him those games anymore might hurt himself so the I've already dismantled the table he likes to jump on... ohmy.gif only left chasing the bicycle and the chair tongue.gif

Yarman, larger breeds normally retire earlier at 7-8 yo coz dey hv 2 carry lotsa weight around. Dat said, hv seen a local Lab bout dat age still doing some agility...slower but still can jump n perform all obstacles. thumbup.gif

Yarlah, must promote otherwise every time dog event also c fashion show, beauty contest, Mr n Mrs Cutesy, fastest dresser. Nothing against dese events but dun really showcase deir natural abilities lah. Bsides, with my type of face n coat...no chance at all at dese events. blush.gif

Hope 2 c more variety of events especially relating 2 dog sports so dat d public cn appreciate K9s even more...n more chance of winning some kibble, he he. drool.gif

blink.gif Dunno whther dis fella can stay still for a minute or not. U taking part?

Checked out MKA agility at Jln Gasing last Sun, mainly d trainers' dogs trying it out. 1 BCollie 'Chester' looks really fit n agile, very good potential. Dun hv all obstacles but still good enuf 4 fun session. V hd a go n was fun coz d field was spacious, flat n hd a good bed of grass. But Liping said dat d field will b converted 2 a carpark n deir training will hv 2 move back 2 d old Petsunite park in Sth City Plaza. Aisayman doh.gif , just ven u thot u've found a nice field 4 agility...

Did u go 4 agility last Sat at Ikano? Will b going today if it dun rain.

If Jojo can catch d ball like dat, den her flyball catching skills shld b much improved already. flex.gif

blush.gif Thks 4 d support. Yarlah not many games dat is suitable. Fastest eating cannot coz eat like kuching, Longest stay cannot coz stay like JRT, Waggiest tail cannot coz tail stiff like ruler, Beauty contest cannot coz look like monyet, Lookalike cannot coz owner dun look like me. doh.gif

Only left with Fastest recall n OB-Agi race...anything which involves running can do. Oh tricks also can but not all hv dis. Dogathon hs more interesting events eg. Masterhunt, Tricks, Dogathon race.

Think dey shld also hv agility 4 different weight/ height divisions, den Taro cn also take part. Wat else can he do ... weight pulling mayb? flex.gif

icon_rolleyes.gif  Yup Odie's d 1. Silkies r from Petnu side. Good 2 know dat he is back on track with d poles. No pressure at all, if unsure just join d Basic Jumpers n Novice Jumpers class.

Trials = real competition. Do u mean practice on d obstacles b4 d trial itself? Yup will try n organise a warmup ring with some jumps n weave poles, but most of d other obstacles will hv to be in place at d proper trial ring beforehand.
*
Sorry for my poor interpretation, I was referring to the 'warm up'! Coz new enviroment dont know Shadow can adapt or not.. We are trying to re-introduce Shadow to the weaving pole after a bad accident last week, now Shadow is kinda afraid lookin at the poles! Hopefully tomolo's class will bear fruit. tongue.gif

rolleyes.gif Bsides training ur dog 2 b proficient n pacy at d obstacles, another very important aspect of d sport is 2 train d handler 2 read d course n run it in d most efficient n smoothest manner possible. Only den will u hv any chance of keeping up with ur dog. Ur training school shld b able 2 teach u d moves if dey r for real. hmm.gif

Install ABS lor.. at least can pause on time.. tongue.gif I heard they minus marks or add minutes as penalty everytime the dog miss the obstacles or they do not do it the proper way, correct me if Im wrong.

I totally agree with you. I really appreciate Fawn for introducing me to JRT's and his advice to me all the time. THanks bro! Not to forget Amanda., hope to meet yea soon! rclxms.gif Alrite back to the topic.. no offence to my current doggie skool.. a little money minded I would say! How do u expect to train a 9 month old Afghan Hound, 1 year old Pug and a Shi Tzu to play Agility, without first giving them OB? The problem is the lack of attention from instructors that makes the whole circuit like a big mess.. Last Sunday 15.04.07 was the worst training ever.. GR's and some mat salleh gal with a dalmation just goes in out of the circuit (which they did not pay for) and 3 big dogs just got stuck in the damn tunnel and rumble inside until it roll on the grass..! doh.gif Is not that v r selfish.. 1 hour is quite short I would say.. ppl walking in out really distracts us.. and d instructors did nothing , maybe scared they will offend the ppl kwa... rclxub.gif I just feel that there are too many students at one time .. chaos! Im not trying to say my dog is the best.. but surely 4 weeks he manage to overcome all d obstacles except the weaving poles off leash.. icon_rolleyes.gif This is all due to my wife (Jennifer - Pflakes) kind attention and enthusiatic towards Shadow. I would not say that the instructor didnt do anything, but they just dont give enuff... sometimes I feel like I want to switch venue. Odie's owner has been complaining all this while.. think that she will change venue soon.. I'm thinking of enrolling for some extra classes (dancing etc.. ) from Pet N you.. Shadow really meant alot to us after all the hardship v have been through together.. so I think giving Shadow d best is not too much after all.. wub.gif

for me, if my dog really pay attention...1hour is more than enough, (but that won't b happening until d next decade)....but if u keep having short break n chit chat around, then obviously is rather tight...

tunnel rolling to d grass?!?! that must b funny.... laugh.gif

since they had so many students, i think they shld actually separate d agility classes, to beginners n senior...

In a proper trial, a team will incur faults for missed, wrong or incomplete obstacle. Any obstacle not completed will mean elimination. In Msia n Spore, to keep things simple, dey just add 5 secs to ur course time for every fault incurred. In Western countries, dey look at the number of faults first b4 looking at d course time to determine d team standings.

Always willing 2 share tips with a fellow JRT owner or any dog 4 dat matter. Good 2 know dat Shadow is progressing well n am sure dat d weave poles will only b a matter of time. thumbup.gif

Dogs n owners running in n out of d agility training ring is unavoidable, u know how Msians r ven dey wanna try something. rolleyes.gif It bcoms worse ven there r a lot of dogs at 1 place. In d end, wat matters is d quality of agility dogs dat come out from any school ie. dogs dat really cn perform on d field n trials. Just hv 2 look at d hit/miss ratio n u'll know wat I mean. whistling.gif

Yeah.. pay attention.. sweat.gif The problem is the instructor is nowhere to be found.. only to be seen in a minute or so.. Actually the tunnel incident is quite funny.. at the mean time dangerous coz the dogs inside the tunnel are actually struggling like mad and accidents could happen. sweat.gif

I would have to agree with you.. I would rather use the word annoying to describe those people. One of the students even brought her dog on heat.. so all the other male dogs are going crazy! She brought it there becoz she had to perform a short dance b4 the graduation ceremony. I hope to find a doggie school with a proper trainer, to start with.. so that v can excel in something me and my wife are keen at.

Open tunnel should b held/ pinned 2 d ground to prevent from rolling n moving bout for d dog's safety n dat cn only b done on a grass field.

Since u asked bout Silkies at agility, here's a clip of 1 at Petnu (Junior, 1 of d trainer's dog). He came 2nd at d recent Novice Agility trials. Watch him go!

I dont think is nice to mention any name lor. But I think she's quite snobbish and the way she handle her dog is very irresponsible, Im trying to be friendly not to offend any ppl, but if I sound her tat day.. it would be very teruk. She even invite another auntie into the circuit and ask her and the dalmation try out.. wtf mad.gif The instructor saw her, just ignore oni. Dont know why. After that the crowd just get bigger, seems like everybody is conducting their own class in the circuit. The most boring class I ever attended. So my wife told me that next time v should sound them, and I would this time.. no more Mr.Nice Guy.

Can always count on u guys 4 support. Mayb d PAAPP trials on 9 June as well?

Shud really try 2 train Pacco 2 focus on u whilst on d agility course, no loitering around ... at least for 45 secs, just enuf 2 complete a run. Only ven she hs done a couple of runs with u, den her reward mayb 2 bum around. Mayb shud go back 2 her fav toys just 2 get her 2 run with u. Easier said den done in a large open field with many dogs around.

If u cn do dat, den she wud b hard 2 beat. rolleyes.gif

is juz too bad that she dun hv favourite toy..... wink.gif

n if i dun let her to loiter around, then when i let her offleash, she'll zoom like a speedo... rclxub.gif

d mongrel can really drive me crazy....anyway, d following week, i will try sausage or even bring along my weapon that i usually use to threaten her @ home laugh.gif

but v alwiz try to think positive tat maxi class got less dogs n jumper class can use leash n got 2 attempt..so if offleash 'dnf'...then v use leash icon_rolleyes.gif

as for novice agility....i'm awaiting for some 'luck' like wat v got during d previous k9 day...eventhough full of faults, but still manage to complete everything.. sweat.gif

(as for PAAPP trial.....is so expensive wink.gif n takda transport...so forget it..

Changed venue was very near d school, nice park. Event was ok with only 3 games, but not a bad effort for a bunch of secondary school students. icon_rolleyes.gif

Got a prize for Talented mutt, more like 'tai har sai' coz d other participants were just kids with toy dogs. blush.gif Well at least d kids n young people were entertained. Other games were like Best Dressed n Most Healthy which isnt my cuppa tea.

On leash events, am fairly sure that Pacco will get a podium finish. Off leash, depends on ur degree of contol n her level of focus.

Penang trials, d courses arent difficult but dey do hv a few dogs (large n small) who cn perform reasonably well, so d competition cn b tough. flex.gif

Penang trials, d courses arent difficult but dey do hv a few dogs (large n small) who cn perform reasonably well, so d competition cn b tough.  flex.gif

cool2.gif Great, Penang cn b good fun coz u also hv d beaches n hawker stalls ... mainly Chinese, so more dog friendly den KL.

If Shadow cn run a 'figure of 8' course layout, den he shud b able 2 handle deir Beginners class trials (jumps n tunnels), n perhaps even d Elementary class (jumps, tunnels, seesaw n table). However, deir jumps r set at 16" or 40cm much higher den d 12" jumps dat u train with. Broad jump set at 2.7 ft in length. Dose r d main differences, plus deir tyre jump looks slightly different as well.

A sample of PAAPP Elementary course cn b viewed at

shakehead.gif Know wat u mean, imagine being K9 Olympic Champion by winning best dressed, best twin, waggy tail n eating contests. Dog olympics without agility, just like Olympics without d athletic events. Best not 2 take it too seriously n just play, play lor.

D long jump over powder - no easy way coz dogs arent dat silly whistling.gif. Just hv train so dat dog recognises a 'Big Jump' command vs. normal 'Jump'. Perhaps u cn practise with 1 hurdle n a blanket laid out to simulate d powder. Show her d obstacle 1st n mention 'Big Jump' b4 attempting. If she can link d command, den it's possible. wink.gif

tongue.gif Talking bout d games on olympic day n if u've sn d long jump event, u'll know wat v mean. Games dont really jive with d olympic theme, so dats why play, play, just for fun only lah. whistling.gif

Or course, if ur r referring 2 agility trials/comp, den shld play properly n do ur best but also not forgetting 2 hv fun as well. Interested in Penang, den shld start training on 16" jumps.

All dogs cn do agility, only diff is d pace n drive dat dey do it at. Hv sn a couple of Shihtzus doing it, naturally at deir own slown steady pace n with no drive. Silkies being terriers, r fairly adept at agility if u cn get dem 2 focus on u. Trouble is dat most owners treat dem like lap dogs, hence dey begin to lose deir terrier roots. Once d drive is gone, den its hard 2 get back

terrier r aggressive little mutt wit great drive....

but if d dog got no drive, use d racing greyhound method.....ppl actually caged them day n night to stimulate their drive...laugh.gif

as for d long jump, i think 1 way would b asking her to stay @ a distance n i myself stand at the other end..... or mayb bring along my private stick... laugh.gif

i think this time, janice's scruffy got a big chance in winning d RM500 cash on d olympic day....

Not my preferred choice, but caging/ crating may actually work. Just imagine if a human was locked in room for a day, ... am sure dat ven he's let out, he'll b jumping around like a monkey n wanting 2 run loose immediately. rclxm9.gif

Standing at 1 end, she may just choose 2 walk round d long jump rclxub.gif ... unless u train consistently.

Cash prize, u may also hv a chance if u start practising ur OB coz 10/12 games r OB inclined or based on looks or just plain puppy games. Only 2 require some degree of athleticism. Wldnt hv made a difference if dey called it rdo or k9 day, instead of olympic. whistling.gif

you want the juicy story again?

Piper and another JRT was the last 2 dogs still sitting properly. Without further adieu, they named the other Jack as the winner and Piper as the runner-up.

The next event, that Jack was in the same event as piper but he's one of those that ran off earlier. doh.gif

this coming event, i'm not sure i can handle 2 Jacks with me that day ... lol

tongue.gif Haha Groovy hs 2 run like dat, otherwise how 2 beat d other bigger dogs in d recall race. Sweet shot, where did u get it. Wld b perfect if only it was sharp.

shakehead.gif D organisers of Dog Olympic Day hv done it again. As u r aware, Groovy won 3 games + a 2nd placing, giving him a total of 38 points which was more than enough to secure d Reserve Champion title. Hence, v were shocked to find Groovy's scores in d scoreboard being tampered with n amended to only 18 points. When queried on d change in scores, d games committee attempted to hide d scoreboard from us n eventually a committee member put on d feeble excuse dat Groovy's score was halved because he was being handled by 2 owners, me and my gf. Now, how lame is that? There were many other dogs being handled by 2 or more owners n their scores weren't diluted except for Groovy's.

Besides, d puppycom rules on the K9 Olympic games states, 'The dog that have accumulated the most points after all the competition will be the Malaysia K9 Olympic Champion 2007 and prizes as below.' Clearly, Groovy (a dog) has satisfied all d critieria in deir rules n by accumulating 38 points, should rightfully be allowed to win his keep.

D incident has left a very bad taste in our mouths n d tampering of results does reflect very poorly on d puppycom games committee and d event as a whole. shakehead.gif

I didnt expect much from the Olympic either. Since the first time Piper's games' was fixed, I never really bother to want to win that much anymore. Look at the 2 finalist for longest stay, since you've mentioned something to me that day.

Bad taste in your mouth? it's been up my rear since the first time i got "fixed" by them laugh.gif

What a shame.. I feel so shame.. What are these organizer trying to promote here? This is not really professional. As I told Fawn earlier, I rather bring my dog go walk walk then to join this lame events again. Imagine the whole family with 1 dog, each one enter 1 event, then if they win the points will be divided? If the family got 5 person then must own 5 dogs to become the Olympic Champion? What silly doggy politics they are up to.. shakehead.gif

atleast they didn't edit d original rule... laugh.gif

as i went back b4 d result was anounce, didn't notice about it until today...terribly shock that they did such a thing,.....n still trying to sound as if they r right 2 impose such law to show fair play...

initially still wanna gv them credit 4 successfully carrying out all d games as per stated....but it seems like d day didn't ended up successful afterall...

n yet now they wanted to state tat pet-n-you own committee dominate in their own agility event.....as in fact, pp.com dare not come over 2 join in the challenge...

N I havent even told d whole story of wat actually happened on Olympic day. If I did, dunno where dey'll hide deir faces. Just dunno wat to do with dese puppy peoplelah.

Yarman, wat dey hv done is demeaning to d word 'Olympics' & 'fairplay'. Can you imagine dem saying that deir decision is fair to all participants ... guess Groovy doesnt even qualify as a participant in deir eyes. rclxub.gif

N he dares to make such sweeping statements without having even attended any of the petnu events, wat a funny man. Naturally petnu will dominate as:
- > 90% of the agility trial participants r from petnu,
- petnu dogs r properly trained in agility n can perform on d field,
- d puppy people struggle to produce decent agility dogs who cn perform at trials.

shakehead.gif But d real reason is that dey actually discourage deir members from participating in other dog events. Have personally heard dis from d members demselves, who wish 2 attend other events but r told otherwise. shakehead.gif

Hey great to c Shadow in action at YMCA. He still remembers all d obstacles n even completed a standard 20 obstacle course, on leash thumbup.gif . Has very good potential n remember to practice those off leash runs at home.

Yup dat Russell cn b a real rascal. Gv him a firm reprimand/wallop next time he comes around. Or just keep an eye on Groovy to learn some feisty JRT wrestling moves for self defence. Here's couple of pics from last Sunday:

Wat do u get if u mix a JRT n a lion? ... Shadow.

Anyway hoping to go YMCA again.. niec place .. nice crowd. tongue.gif

she dun bite...but she juz like 2 bully...

her trademark is 'sudden attack'.....whenever i c her doing a 'down' motion n staring towards a dog.....i can predict that she plan to launch an attack...

so i'll try to stop her b4 she start it...
