So... I've never ever had my ears pierced before, because I was so afraid of the pain and the annoying aftercare.

But lately I've been thinking about getting my ears pierced, but I totally don't know how to get around doing it. My friends told me that I should go to some professional piercer to get it done, the ones that uses needles instead of guns, because guns can't be sterilized and they are often blunt.

QUOTE
The difference between a gun and needle was explained by my old piercer this way: Stretch a piece of leather out taught. Stab it with a butter knife - that's what a piercing gun is like. Now pierce through it with a needle, notice how easy it goes through - that's what a proper piercing is like.

SO yeah, I don't know. Anyone can recommend a good place to got to get a normal (non-cartilage) ear lobe piercing in PJ area? Better if it's in Tropicana City Mall, 1-Utama, Curve or Midvalley. Best if they actually use needles and have a room where they do it instead of in the open from a stall like in most malls, I guess.

Or, anyone can tell me about their experience with particular shops when they got their ears pierces. My friend's quote about the butter knife and needle thingy makes me very cautious of piercing guns. hmm.gif

I was strongly warned by friends (who aren't local KL people) to not go to malls, where they are mostly stalls and you get your ears pierced in public.

Owh, i didnt even know there was a difference between the needle and gun method of piercing. I've never heard of needle piercing in fact.

Maybe you can try the jewelry stores like poh kong, lazo diamond etc if you dont want to go to those little stalls in shopping centres.

But the gun piercing doesnt hurt that bad, dont fret or worry too much about it. Its only a split second and then its done. And they also spray that freeze thingy to numb your ears a little bit.

Yeah, I didn't know about it too.

A search online showed many that mentioned the difference

Basically,

1) gun can't be easily sterilized easily, and most of the time, they don't sterilized, so basically you share the same thing with previous users

2) gun users generally don't have the skill and simply pancung holes, so hygiene is an issue

3) the butter knife analogy, basically gun creates more trauma to your ears because the earring used to pancung the hole is generally blunt, so it's unnecessary trauma that takes a long time to heal + risk of infection and stuff. Needles are sharp and cuts clean, so it doesn't tear your tissues that badly. But apparently it hurts more when you get it done, but in the long run, seems like recovery is easier.

Seems like tattooists could do piercings too... I wonder...

gun... they will set the earring on the gun and then pierce at ur ear...
the earring needle is sharp, so it's pierce + wear earring in 1 process...

Is better to do it in jewellery shop like poh kong. i did my first piercing in those kiosk in midvalley. Gun type. Got a bad infection and the hole close up. After a gap of 2 years, i did my piercing again, but this time in a jewellery shop. Using gun, and they do measurements.. it was fast n efficient. And they give oil to apply too. reduce swelling n redness..

U should watch ur diet after u had pierced ur ear. My 1st was done on 18 yrs old n i din watch my diet, so end up infection, swollen until i had to remove the earring n let it heal.

Did my 2nd time last yr, watched my diet, so no infection at all....

Both r done at stalls in malls, they use gun...but they will spray some alcohol on ur ear, so consider sterilized d gua....

Had mine done with a gun because using needles from those tattoo parlour was expensive :/ RM50 per ear.

Been soaking my piercings on and off with warm sea salt solution, been 3 weeks + now I think. Don't think I have an infection yet, but the annoying thing is that it seems like sometimes when i tried to turn the studs, I would tear the fistula and the dried wound and it starts to hurt again, for days. Happened a few times on my right ear. Had to stop turning the stud and wait till the pain is gone and try again.

So many mixed instructions on whether to turn the studs or leave them alone. Many say must turn, some said turn edi it's harder to heal

How old are you by the way?

Because usually girls who are going for piercing after 15 years old have the higher chance to get keloid. Which is a scar and i got one on my right ear after i pierced when i was 16. I have to removed it because its getting bigger and it cost me about 5-6k for that small surgery.

After care is important smile.gif

might get too. Because if there is infection and about to close up then thats when keloid forms.

Cause mine was i got infection. There was pus and its swollen and didnt care and later on the hole closed and keloid formed.

Need to wait 2 months huh? Okay, I was told by other friends to ignore the piercer's instruction that I can remove after 1 week and wait for more than 2 months before changing earrings.

I am 22 now. So higher chance of keloid yawn.gif how do I know if I get it?

Non-cartilage ear piercing poses less risks compared to other more complicated piercings. Most people pierce their earlobes using the gun, you can opt to have it done by reputable jewelry shops, instead of those stalls, they're probably more hygienic.

If you still insist on using the needle, I suggest you try those shops specialized in tattoo and piercing, they have abundant supply of needles for different piercing needs. May cost more though, since they use a fresh needle everytime.

i think once you pierced your ears, try not to touch it frequently coz you dont know if your hands are entirely clean. keep it dry, especially after shower. the wound would heal by itself in few days, then only you can take off the stud.

when i did mine, i didnt use any sea salt, no food restriction, nothing. and all healed well.

Added on December 21, 2012, 2:32 pmin fact, i personally think piercing gun is safe and quite clean coz the only thing that touches and go thru your ear lobe is the earring. the reason why a gun is used to create the pressure for the earring to poke through your ear lobe.

Been 3 weeks now actually, or 4 weeks. I guess I did touch the spot too much, tried to turn the studs once every day, and I freak out whenever I find that it's hard to turn the stud (almost always the right ear), so i end up turning more and touching more. doh.gif

also, do look out if your skin is allergy to the earring. i've friends who're allergic to gold plated, silver and god knows. as long as you dont touch it, it should be ok. give it another week or so. if still persist, you may want to consider removing it. let it heal completed and re-pierce.

You guys are so careful with your ears!

I get 3 piercing in one time with the gun-shot method when I was 15! (Total is 5 - already have 2 since 7yrs old)

The next day I remove the earring and replace with the silver ring type - mao cantik mah ...

It didn't hurt that bad for me. Anyway after getting lazy changing and cleaning, I let the hole closed. Now only left 2 (the basic one since 7 years old)...
