Dear Nikon sifus notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Sorry to disturb you guys but I have a noob question if you don't mind laugh.gif
I'd noticed that the Nikon D600 comes with a 24-85mm kit lens.
I am personally using a Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm kit lens. I was wondering what's the difference between these two lenses apart from the range? How come the higher end D600 comes with a shorter range lens?

THank you in advance and I apologize if the question is silly laugh.gif

D600 is using Full Frame sensor (FX). 24mm will give you actual 24mm.
D90 is Crop Sensor (DX). The crop factor is 1.5X, so whatever lens you mount, you need to multiply by 1.5X to get the actual focal length (in 25mm format). So your 18mm, when mount on your D90, the focal length will be 27mm.

Other than that, 18-105mm kit lens on the D90 is a DX lens, while the 24-85mm kit lens that comes with D600 is a FX lens.

Thanks for the reply sir, appreciate it notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
And thanks for the info, my friend did told me something like that as well haha~

Based on what I've heard, for Nikon the DX lenses can also be used on full-frame camera right? hmm.gif
And apart from the focal lengths, I was wondering whether you have any comments on the image quality? Thanks in advance again~~ notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Yes, that's the advantage of Nikon. When you mount DX lens on full frame camera, there is a CROP Mode, where your 18mm DX lens will become 27mm due to the Crop Mode, this is because the lens cannot utilize the full frame sensor area. Hence, a DX lens.

As for image quality, can't comment because I have no experience using both and compare. But FX lens are more expensive and when mount on DX, it should give better result because it's utilizing the centre area which is usually the strength of the lens. The problem is when you mount on DX body, 24mm will become 36mm which is no longer wide.

Built quality, feel wise, I believe the D600 bundled lens will be much better. Perhaps when you try and feel both you will know. Besides, aperture wise, the bundled lens for D600 is f/3.5 to f/4.5, plus it's a refresh of the older yet very good 24-85mm f/3.5-4 AF-D.

Thank you for the explanation sifu notworthy.gif
I still get quite a long focal length range when I attach the 18-105mm to the D600 right? haha laugh.gif
Sorry for the noob questions~

I have no idea what lens to get even if I get the D600 also doh.gif

Let me "try" to answer this questions in my humble opinion...  biggrin.gif

Kit lens are "usually" sold to first time DSLR buyer... and I think Nikon is targeting D600 to first time DSLR FX users or users upgrading from DX to FX body... ( or people with lots of dough and no dunno where to spend it...  whistling.gif  )

The lens zoom range is too subjective and depends on your requirements, do you shoot more landscape, portraits, birds or everything in between...

If the zoom range fit your budget/requirements, then buy the kit, or else just get the body only and buy the lens or a few lens to fit your budget/spending/requirements...

Goto http://www.mylensdb.com/ and do your own comparison la...

Thank you for the reply too sifu notworthy.gif
I would love to have a lens for everything (like the 18-105mm one I already have haha) tongue.gif

Thanks for the link, will look into it, and hopefully I will not be the noob who spent money for the "wrong" lenses notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Good morning fellow Nikon sifus!
I kept on reading in spec sheets of dslrs that the ISO is extendible to perhaps say, 100 to 6400 (original is 200 to 3200)... I was wondering what that means?

Thanks in advance for your reply sifus!! notworthy.gif

200-3200 is what we call the "native ISO". Where else the "100" is actually Lo1.0 which is aided by the processor, sames goes with 6400 which should be hi1.0

I see XD
Thank you very much for your explanation sifu notworthy.gif

Hi fellow Nikon sifus notworthy.gif

Its me again with some questions tongue.gif
For sifus with FX Nikon cameras, I was wondering whether you guys have any lens to recommend?

Sorry but I'm pretty much a noob here at "additional" hardware haha T____T
Currently using a Nikon D90 with kit lens and a 50mm f1.8. Looking to upgrade to Full frames soon.
I pretty much liked the flexibility of the 18-150mm kit lens although I the photo quality could be a little bit better (not sure whether its the camera or the lens, or both? laugh.gif)

I was wondering whether there are any equivalent FX lens like that? I've browsed through Nikon's webpage and I don't really understand what's the difference between one zoom lens to another laugh.gif

Sorry for my noobiness, and thanks in advance for the reply notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

umm...50mm 1.8 is the go to lens tongue.gif

u mean 18-105? no real equivalent...at least cheap ones.
closest cheap-ish one is old 28-200...
newer cheap-ish one is 24-85...
if got money 24-120 tongue.gif

Many thanks for the reply sifu, appreciate it! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
Yeah, typo, should be 18-105mm haha ... but this one is DX lens right?
A quick search through the Nikon webpage and I found these, which are sort of within budget @___@:

1. AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED (the one you mentioned right? biggrin.gif)
2. AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF
3. AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR (I think this is the kit lens) laugh.gif

I am not really sure what's the differences between all these, apart from the price lol..
I was wondering whether sifus can give a little bit of comments on these lenses?
Thanks thanks notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Haha, thanks man, I guess this "golden" rule applies to everything huh? laugh.gif
Still, looking at the specs, some of the lenses were released at 2000, that's a very long time ago yo despite its higher price..
Not sure whether the technology used is different or not? hmm.gif

bt once u're into FF, i think u would look into those primes instead..
cheapo 50mm 1.4, or the 35mm 1.4.. cz those 24-120 n other zoom lens arent as sharp as the primes..
*
THanks for your reply too sifu, much appreciated notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
I agree that prime lens really give much, much better image quality than zoom lens (I have a 50mm 1.8)...
Despite the very impressive image quality, I am not very comfortable with not being able to zoom in and out haha I am noob but I like to take random and "impromptu" shots, so I guess its nicer and more fun to have a zoom lens haha, probably backed up with a prime lens for "prepared" shots XD

I think they refer to 24-120 f4, try find that see got or not.
I am using the kit lens from d600 24-85mm, in term of low light conditions, it will hunt like mad. but it was good in normal condition, zoom range is good enough and it was light enough to carry around.
At this moment I looking at 35-70 f2.8d at ebay smile.gif

Many thanks for the reply sir notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
Yeah, I am looking at the D600 too haha~
I think I'm sort of having the same problem (hunt like mad) with my current D90 + kit lens laugh.gif But I'm pretty sure the D600 will do a whole lot better under low light conditions as compared to the D90~
Just found the 24-120mm f4 and ouch! Out of my budget haha, I don't deserve such good gears I guess tongue.gif

Hmm, based on my untrained eyes, I think the upper and upper left petals a bit out of focus? and the leaf at the bottom seemed unhealthy (not as nice as healthy ones haha) icon_rolleyes.gif
