Photography is a form of art. Photographers are meant to, through their photos, show the world their perspectives, views and styles. different people have different tastes and preference, and different people view the same subject differently. Does using phone cams to snap pics and post it up on instagram make them any less of a photographer as compared to a person using a dslr? IMO, I feel that instagram greatly promoted the photography scene, and now everyone can showcase their art through instagram. For me' it's a big yay for instagram!

QUOTE(LegendLee @ Nov 9 2012, 07:38 PM) Instagram is fun but it's not photography. So photography for you is DSLR image quality, high megapixels, expensive lenses, super thin DoF, with little post-processing/filters? Like it or not Instagram is a form of photography. I've seen some "photographers" who take better "photos" on Instagram than majority of the people on this forum. Majority of the people on this forum seem to only care about their gears not the photos that they take. All I read about in this forum is how "poisoned" they are by a certain expensive gear when in fact they should spend more time refining their skills not lusting over an overpriced piece of gear. And not only on Instagram do you see people posting shitty pics, slapping a filter and calling themselves a photographer. You see that with people owning a high end DSLR as well. Just my 2 cents. Disagree with it as you please.I detest ppl who post shitty pics, slap a filter and then call themselves a photographer. |

Photography is an art, showing their perspective and view.."The word photography comes from two ancient Greek words: photo, for "light," and graph, for "drawing." "Drawing with light" is a way of describing photography.".. (Sourcesource). Before the invention of camera, human draw, and until today, the invention of smart phone, photography is still going on , just in different way in different time. The amount of pretentiousness in this topic is astonishing. Who cares what the actual definition of photography is? At the end of the day, it's just a mean to express yourself. If someone chooses to express themselves through iPhone and Instagram, who are you judge them really?

Followed by the comment "I'm an amazing photographer" I do use instagram and I do take those random shots for fun but some people are too obsessed with how good their instagram pics that they lose themselves to it. Photography is an art, it's a way to convey a message. When the message is a poorly taken photo of your breakfast with an early bird filter, to me that's not photography. Like how Art is subjective to different people, that's not art to me. I'm not saying its wrong, it's just not something you will brag about to show "you're a photographer". PS: Regulars here do take good photos occasionally. At least some of them really know what they're doing. It's just gear talk is a lot more "conversational". The day someone wins a Pulitzer with an instagram photo will be the day I recognize these "instagraphers/iPhongraphy". Long story short , TL;DR version 1. Instagram takes snapshot not art generally. If it is, it's probably near the lowest point. 3. I don't care how they express themselves. But they are not photographers if all they use is instagram to take horrible pics with their phone. Photography is an art, but photography holds a stronger value than that which is the power of documentation. Your comment on how Instagram users take poor photos is very vague in my opinion. It basically applies to all photographers not only Instagram users. However, I'm not saying this based on my instagram account alone but rather in general. There are many reasons to why instagram isn't real/serious photography 1. It's never meant/designed to be used for serious photography in the first place 2. Filters are a throw to 20 years back where photos quality are generally worse with lens flare and overdone colours/contrast. But that's a good thing that it's not "photography" in a serious way. I appreciate instagram because it allows me to take random photos without giving much thought about how people will judge my photos. It's more fun and light hearted, and I can just post whatever I feel like it to document my life. I do take shitty photos in instagram, I am guilty of all the food photos with an awful filters and so on , but I don't pride myself that these are great photos. I think it's very important to know the difference between snapshots taken for fun and "photography" where your photos are being judged. The latter being exhibitions, published materials, portfolios, photography blogs and to facebook photography page.. you can't post nonsense there but good photos there are really good. The former being instagram and "phone uploads". It should stay distinctively away from serious photography because I want to take simple, sometimes horrible photos just for fun without people judging me. If people start claiming that real serious photography is their horrible instagram photos, this defeats the purpose. It's just that certain people aka hipster who thinks their awful photos on instagram are awesome pieces of photography who irritates me. "Hey look at my poorly taken instagram photo, it's so awesome that I'm a pro photographer" - Those kind of people should be banned in instagram. http://instagram.com/legendlee/ This post has been edited by LegendLee: Nov 10 2012, 12:11 PM |

Actually, instagram to me is just a new form of photography. Just like music moved on from classical to pop to rock to rap, it will of course have it detractors. Granted that 99% of instagram is just picture of someone's breakfast or their kids updated every hour, there are already some pretty good instagram artist around these days. It just not bring photography to the masses, but also bring the masses to photography (it is very easy to browse around what your friends have liked and getting inspired on what can be done with the humble camera on a phone). Some of the cream will rise to the top. And it democratises photography in that sense. What is not to like about that?

Instagram is a new form of photography.
I do use DSLR, but I also use Instagram, both generate different kind of view and art. As long you snap photo, you are a photographer. I not means you are pro or not, but you are a photographer. They is no rules on earth a great photo must be snapping using DSLR, any form of camera can get a decent & meaningful photo. They also rules means photo must be in great quality = great photo, also no rules where over saturate, over exposure, under exposure, flare and etc misc. filter means nay photo. Photo is art, which is subjective, you feel great not means the rest must agree with you, even you are professional photographer, but this does not means your photo being appreciate/like by everyone. This scenario same as you think certain photos is pretty bad but this probably your own thinking/view, it might means/like for others. Instagram is yay! One cannot call themselves a painter after painting a horrible picture once in their pre-school. One cannot call themselves a chef or a cook if they can only cook instant noodles even if they own expensive cooking utensils. As such, one cannot call themselves a photographer just because they've instagram on their smart phones. They're not photographers, they're smart phone owners, they're instagram users. A person cooking why cannot call as chef, it still can, just a matter a great chef or bad only. This also same for a painter and etc. How you call a person that was painting? It still name as painter. As usual everything is subjective on art. You find it simply draw but others might find it beautiful. This post has been edited by Andrewtst: Nov 18 2012, 10:28 PM |

QUOTE(Andrewtst @ Nov 18 2012, 07:11 PM) As long you snap photo, you are a photographer. I not means you are pro or not, but you are a photographer. They is no rules on earth a great photo must be snapping using DSLR, any form of camera can get a decent & meaningful photo. They also rules means photo must be in great quality = great photo, also no rules where over saturate, over exposure, under exposure, flare and etc misc. filter means nay photo. so you're saying everyone is a photographer? LOL. no. it is not. I cook dinner, I'm not a chef. You can take photo with a phone that doesn't make you a photographer, just like how a person who owns a camera doesn't make them a photographer - they're just a camera owner. LOL.no. seriously, if you actually LOVE photography - you also should learn to keep the value of the term "photographer". there's a huge difference between a "photographer" and "one that captures image". your "great chef or bad only" thought is flawed. if one is bad in cooking, one does not deserve to be called a chef. |

I love photography not means I need to deny how instagram can create great meaningful memories and photos.
Also, too many people nowadays though only DSLR means photography, a great photo not related to any gear you use. Also plenty that can snap few nice photos are too ego and commenting people work with some more sarcastic, they though they are really great, are they? I not means you, you are professional, I mean a lot others, especially at this Photography, Digital Imaging & Video group. Also, I don't find any wrong using filter via PP. Instagram consider instant PP via phone. This post has been edited by Andrewtst: Nov 18 2012, 10:39 PM |

I prefer to use default colors and such because I just like the actual colors of the world. my preference is to show as best as I can, what I see, not something filtered (referring to my mobile photos). It's my way to appreciate the natural colors of the world.............. and I don't need Instagram to make my photos look cool. |

As I always find even using instagram, basic skill for capturing nice moment is still required, by only apply filter on bad photo won't bring out outstanding & memorable.

a lot of really good photographers out there aren't even PROFESSIONAL to begin with - because the term PROFESSIONAL just refers to whether one is doing it as a profession.
One could be a hobbyist, often known as AMATEUR but that by no means indicate the lack of skill. In Malaysia, there are 2 doctors by profession who are great in photography. |
