Despite all the bad press on Instagram, I actually like it. biggrin.gif It's limiting, brainless, cheesy but heck - it's fun.

Instagram is fun because it brings filters+photography+social together.

Instagram is fun but it's not really "photography"
I detest ppl who post shitty pics, slap a filter and then call themselves a photographer.

If they call themselves pro photographers, they must at least know the standard/definition of it.
You can't call yourself an expert if you've no idea what an expert is.

Photography is a form of art. Photographers are meant to, through their photos, show the world their perspectives, views and styles. different people have different tastes and preference, and different people view the same subject differently. Does using phone cams to snap pics and post it up on instagram make them any less of a photographer as compared to a person using a dslr? IMO, I feel that instagram greatly promoted the photography scene, and now everyone can showcase their art through instagram. For me' it's a big yay for instagram! biggrin.gif

So photography for you is DSLR image quality, high megapixels, expensive lenses, super thin DoF, with little post-processing/filters? Like it or not Instagram is a form of photography. I've seen some "photographers" who take better "photos" on Instagram than majority of the people on this forum. Majority of the people on this forum seem to only care about their gears not the photos that they take. All I read about in this forum is how "poisoned" they are by a certain expensive gear when in fact they should spend more time refining their skills not lusting over an overpriced piece of gear. And not only on Instagram do you see people posting shitty pics, slapping a filter and calling themselves a photographer. You see that with people owning a high end DSLR as well. Just my 2 cents. Disagree with it as you please.

i agreed with you.. Photography is an art, showing their perspective and view..

"The word photography comes from two ancient Greek words: photo, for "light," and graph, for "drawing." "Drawing with light" is a way of describing photography.".. (Sourcesource). Before the invention of camera, human draw, and until today, the invention of smart phone, photography is still going on , just in different way in different time.

The amount of pretentiousness in this topic is astonishing. Who cares what the actual definition of photography is? At the end of the day, it's just a mean to express yourself. If someone chooses to express themselves through iPhone and Instagram, who are you judge them really?

Remember, photography isn't a sport.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
What I don't agree is taking photos of every of meal you eat, random clouds in the sky, feets in sand or grass, shots with no compositional value whatsover and slapping the early bird filter... Followed by the comment "I'm an amazing photographer"
I do use instagram and I do take those random shots for fun but some people are too obsessed with how good their instagram pics that they lose themselves to it.

Photography is an art, it's a way to convey a message. When the message is a poorly taken photo of your breakfast with an early bird filter, to me that's not photography. Like how Art is subjective to different people, that's not art to me. I'm not saying its wrong, it's just not something you will brag about to show "you're a photographer".

PS: Regulars here do take good photos occasionally. At least some of them really know what they're doing. It's just gear talk is a lot more "conversational".

Again take note that I'm not against people who use instagram. I'm just against those who take horrible pics, slap a filter and call themselves photographers.

Most if not all reputable photography competition will ban instagram images with filters.
Heck, try submitting those photos to professional photography associations and they will roll down on the floor and laugh at you.
So it's not me who's judging them but big names in this industry. The day someone wins a Pulitzer with an instagram photo will be the day I recognize these "instagraphers/iPhongraphy".

Long story short , TL;DR version
1. Instagram takes snapshot not art generally. However, it can still take something of real artistic value in rare occasions
2. People who use instagram to take horrible photos then slap a filter of it is hardly photography. If it is, it's probably near the lowest point.
3. I don't care how they express themselves. But they are not photographers if all they use is instagram to take horrible pics with their phone.
