I only feel the difference when i need to program it. Anyway,

I am not sure for the question you asked, but I think java listener uses GoF observer pattern which takes up a small part of whole program whereas MVC is generally the whole concept on how the program being implemented. It intents to break the whole program into a clear cut segments.
