Hi guys, I'm currently using a Nokia 6630 but I'm planning to get either the Nokia 9500 or the Dopod 838.

I've already weighed the pros and cons of both phones and have narrowed it down to one issue:

Currently I have about a years worth of received SMS messages stored on my phone (MMC). I know I can transfer the messages to the 9500 coz it's a Nokia, but what about the 838? Any ideas?

I would really like to get the 838 coz it's smaller than the 9500, looks sleeker and has a better camera, but if I can't get the messages moved across, forget about it. I'll get the 9500.

This is going to be the deciding factor.

Thanks.

Honestly do you actually need a 9500? Considering its form factor, I rather choose other symbian model over it since there are quite alot offer by nokia, beside communicator series.

By the way moving your sms to wm device is more likely close to imposible but there are software which enable to save your sms to pc in text format.

How about the Nokia 9300i? Much smaller than the 9500 but still retains most of the important functions available in the 9500. biggrin.gif

On my previous 9300, a Word file takes approximately 10-20 seconds to open.

And you can only install apps / games meant for Symbian Series 80. No Windows apps can be installed.

My personal opinion: Nokia 9500 is just a piece of brick with added features... would i carry it? no way... the last time i wear my cargo pants was 5 years ago...

If i'm not mistaken N9500 spot only a VGA camera which is only .3MP. The quality is lousy at best. N9xxx serias tend to hang quite a lot (i'm ex-N9000series user), you have to take out the battery to resolve the problem. 80M of ram is not enough by today standard. Net browsing is another headache cause with no touch screen navigation is a pain (try surfing without the mouse and you can see what i mean). Besides, the size pose another problem. Software is hard to come by.

Wow...thanks for the all the responses. 9500 series is quite buggy, huh? Thanks for that. I haven't actually used any of the communicator series before. Just a quick comparison test at the shop.

About the touchscreen issue, I know that it is a nicety to have, but since I am left handed, using a stylus is a terrible experience. I have an IPAQ at home which I can never use. The scroll bar is on the right, so my hand covers the screen everytime I scroll, and the whole handwriting recognition...don't get me started. I ditched the IPAQ for a pen and paper.

It's probably a learning curve that I need to overcome..but I don't have the patience, and neither do my clients (during meetings especially)...smile.gif. Until then..give me a keyboard or T9 any day! Which is why the Dopod 818 or the 02 minis are not in consideration. The 9300i is also under consideration as it is smaller than the 9500 and it supports 802.11g as opposed to the B only 9500.

Hmm..impossible to move the SMS messages, thanks for the heads up. Any other Nokia phones that you would recommend that have Wifi besides the 9300i or the 9500? I'm looking for something communicator-eque.

chtan> Looks like you're well versed in the 9XXX series. May I ask, what mobile phone are you using now? Would like to know.

Thanks again guys!
cheers.

Dopod900. If you really need a functional keypad then Dopod900 is the one to go with as it is the best keyboard i have experience with, the textile feedback and good responsive is no where to be match by N9xxx series's keyboard.
Regarding SMS, you can export it to text file by using your nokia communicator suit software, eventhough it won't appear in your new inbox but you still have all the important contents with you, right? Or you can try forward the SMS one by one to your new device.

Sorry, i don't call IIs keyboard....a keyboard, just a keypad. Try typing in Dopod900 and you can know what keyboard really mean. You can literally put both of your hand on it and start typing just like a really pc keyboard, and the textile feedback is really great.
Since i'm ex-smartphone user, i won't want to go back to smartphone anymore as they are less powerfull and prone to hang if overly loaded.

Actually you can import SMS. Firstly save all SMS to simcard on your 6630. When you bought ur PPC, transfer it back into the PPC using Jeyo Mobile Companion.

I think the 838 is a nice device should you need that QWERTY keypad. It is a bit on the thick side though.
